- Ryan reviews some concepts outlined in Applications of No-Limt Hold'em: a Guide to Understanding Theoretical Sound Poker by Matthew Janda.
This book comes highly recommended, as it covers the deep fundamental theory behind the game. It is a great supplement to the Upswing Lab, as many of the strategies taught in the Lab adhere to the underlying theory described in this book. Doug and Ryan rarely have much to say in terms of poker book recommendations, but this is a notable exception.

NIce video Ryan!Regarding the 98hh vs 66 on a K73 board, although they both have the same raw equity ,namely 9%, vs an opponent with top pair, 98hh is more efficient at utilizing its equity while 66 is not.To realise this ,one needs to see how both equities are constructed. 98hh has 22 outs to become a draw on the T and then around 18% to improve on the R ,, probabilistically that is equal to the product of those two equities.On the other hand 66 needs a 6 to improve and can get one either on T or R with 4.5% on each street, so probabilistically it's equal to the sum of those two equities.The thing is, 98hh 's showdown equity (18%) does not have within it Turns "bad equity" which is the chance of not getting one of the 22 cards (52%), while 66 showdown equity has within it Turns "bad Equity" which is the chance of not getting a 6 on the turn (95%) and getting it on the River.

I received the free 20 Rules for Flush Draws that you and Mr. Polk wrote. Good stuff. However, I think the table on page six (Rule #9) is incomplete. For example 87s and 62s are "uncoloured". Or am I missing something?

hi ryan, thanks for your post. but what about other GTO books like Will Tipton's two volume Expert No Limit Holdem or Chen's mathematics of poker? I know other pros (like Tyler Forrester and guys of a similar ilk) rate both of these books highly...
as an additional point, Ryan, any chance you make videos about Tipton's and Chen's books in the way that u have done here?!

+u mudder pucker cause you could read the book and the information in it might be misleading to a enthusiastic amateur that it results in further leaks in your game, so it can be better to ask a profitable player whether they think the information in a book is of value or is misleading.
I'm pretty sure you've seen advice in books that you've thought was misleading or even out of date given the way the game has evolved.

Warning to those reading this book, don't use MDF to defend your preflop opening range versus a 3bet you don't want to fold 2/3 of your range versus a re-raise...
this isnt advocated in the book anyway, if i recall correctly. I think he specifically talks about having to defend significantly more than MDF because we're calling a lot and enabling our opponents bluffs to realize equity.

+Ryan Gomez MDF means minimum defense frequency, it's basically how often you need to call a 3 bet before giving your opponent positive ev to 3 bet every hand profitably
- only if you know how frequent he three bet for value vs bluff. Ppl resist learning theory and fundamentals poker because they seem difficult to apply in live games where there are ton on factors to take into consideration.

Sometimes I'll nearly double the pot if I'm in a hand against a calling station with the best hand on the flop! This book probably illustrates how I play for the most part which is "old school tag" although I do gamble with hands and I do make big bluffs if I think I'm the favorite to win the hand or I might call all the way down if more then 2 people are in on the hand "myself included" so I can't lose big with an all in and to keep the other players in the hand besides one called or raiser who might be ahead of me in the hand, if I'm way ahead in the hand I'll let the hand play out cheap until other cards that may come can change the leader and that is when I start betting big or I go all in! I also make donkish looking bets and that works a lot and I play hands like aces usually straight forward and psycho and in cheaper games this strategy is the best strategy to beat the weakest players of all types, "maniacs, calling stations, and players playing tight and passive who are miss reading me for either of the above"
it's really uncomfortable to watch a video from this angle. please consider lowering your camera and using a normal camera angle

I've been on a very bad run this year and I think it's from listening to Ryan and these theories - I should have kept folding and raised with only my top 3℅ and limped with the rest because players are so fucking bad they don't know the difference
Exactly, a 52 card deck can't but once in a while bring blockers into the hand post flop. analysis to paralysis isn't the 1-2 I play. Simple math is 52 card game. Real poker is played between players regardless of the holdings. If only math than what are betting variances for, or heaven in a sense.
Some feedbacks. The content of these videos seems cool but 1) the volume is too low (or you're voice volume goes ok, then super low, then ok), 2) Ryan you are kinda mumbling all the time and 3) it's almost like you dont finish your sentences, but you do, but you dont. More like it's unclear what you wanna say like an unfinished thought. 4) you talk a little bit too fast sometimes. Overall, a little bit more clarity would be greatly welcome. Sorry if that sounds harsh, I do care.

I bought this book because I respect Ryan Fees opinion, but unfortunately I feel like I need to report that this book has been a major disappointment and a waste of money. This is a bummer because i think Matthew Janda is a cool guy, if you watch Jnandez's interviews with him he seems great. On the 2+2 forums one of the greatest 6Max players in the world (OTB) says the same thing: that the book is disappointing to him, and the theory proposed in it is not sound, not GTO, and not practical. There are also many errors/typos in the equations, phrasing, and terminology which will frustrate the attentive reader who is trying to wrap their head around these concepts which are so difficult to begin with when they are written correctly. When you are trying to learn this kind of deep theory the last thing you want is to have and doubts about the authors fundamental understanding of the strategy he claims is 'GTO.'
Right now I am just trying to get what I can out of this book because im sure there is value somewhere in these four hundred pages. So far I am amazed at how little this book has to offer, and how sketchy some of the theory is inside of it. If you have read this far let me wrap it up by saying: please dont waste your money on this book, Bill Chens Mathematics of Poker is praised by most of the great players in the game, and I think it would be a far more worthwhile investment of your time and money.

i thought tipton book is for heads up? or is the stuff applicable for 6max too for example?

This book maybe is behind modern concepts but it helps a lot to understand fundamentals of a game and how we should approach to things such as constructing ranges on every street or how to do a basic math...you cant take every information and sick to it no matter what
your face tells me you can t play this game, you try but aaaah
