Yes, more food hauls. Its so inspirational to see how you not only grow the food but how you incorporate its use so nothing is wasted. And you make it look easy to create a variety of meals with weekly meal plans. Also like seeing how you follow what is in season and store it to expand the season.

Henry and Lilly have the croup. Be very careful if their throat swells they can not get air. As soon as I heard them, my heart went out to you. My last three children suffered greatly from the croup and we had to do ambulance rides for my youngest daughter. Praying for you guys. Parents get sore throats but kids get croup from this virus.

I like these, I was just trying to think through and identify things that I am not able to do on my mini homestead and how I might improve that. We moved 2 years ago from a 2 acre spot in the southern NM desert to the plains area of Eastern NM. More stuff will grow here but a shorter season by about 4 weeks and re shrunk to 1/2 acre in town. Still only doing chickens and garden and homemade cleaning stuff but wanting to expand to meat birds and have drastically expanded garden this year! Thanks for the inspro!

for yogurt, we buy the starter, make a first batch of yogurt and freeze a bunch in ice cube trays, then we just thaw and add a couple of cubes per yogurt batch (to taste- more starter makes a tart batch) you save some from the last batch made by the frozen cubes- that way you keep the culture "young" longer... or you can use fresh starter to make the new batch of cubes- yogurt is fun and so easy

With the amount of land you have you should be eating almost exclusively from your farm year round.
You have masses of wasted and under utilised space behind your homestead that could be a massive and productive garden. You also have a lot of space for fruit trees.
If you drank less milk you would be able to produce cheese with the milk you already produce. Humans don’t need to drink lots of milk when they’re consuming dairy in other forms as well.

Just curious if you have land and do this? It’s so easy to see the work that can be done but the actual action of it takes effort. There’s either time and money and no energy or energy and money but no time or energy and time but no money. Yes land is available but do you see all they are doing? I’m sure they know the things they can do but it’s all a just one bite at a time. I’m in his boat so I understand. It can’t all be done at once.

If you make your yogurt with a good starter (I use Kefir yogurt) and then save back some of your yogurt as the next batch of starter. That would cut out an additional purchase in the future. (If you get one of those Euro Bowls and strain a batch of yogurt ......you can use the whey for baking, but the strained yogurt will be sweet without any sugar added and more like cream cheese.)

Justin---The opportunistic competitive viewing options among your and other Homesteader TH-cam channels provides viewers with a bunch of material to absorb and just plain fun. How is it that so many of you Homesteaders are showcasing your "hauls" (not "huals")?
You TH-cam homesteaders seem to be aware of and competing with each other. Must be a big challenge to keep content fresh.

Honey Ginger Lemon Syrup: Remove stickers and wash 2 to 3 lemons, slice thin, do not peel. No need to remove seeds unless you wish to. Peel ginger root, approximately 5 inches of root, ginger peels well with a spoon, just rub gently. Slice ginger about an 1/8 inch thick.
Alternately layer ginger and lemons slices into a clean, quart sized, mason jar. Do not pack tight. When the jar is filled carefully pour honey into the jar, removing as many air bubbles as possible. The handle of the spoon, or a chopstick work well for this. Place lid and ring on jar and place in refrigerator. Twice a day remove jar and shake. You will notice that the honey is getting thin from absorbing the lemon juice, lemon oil, and the good stuff from the ginger. Strain it and save the juice.
Store in a jar keep it in the refrigerator. Take a spoon full the minute you feel a sore throat . You can drink it with hot water too.

I'm sorry, I'm not usually one to make negative comments and I don't mean to be critical. But as Justin is talking about all of the healthy food they eat and they certainly seem to live very healthily as well, I'm wondering about the cause of all this sickness. The kids don't go to school, where a lot of this stuff could be caught. I'm a big proponent of vitamin C to build up the immune system. I wonder if Rebekah has any thoughts about that with all of the other supplements she seems to use. Again, not finding fault, just concerned because I really love this family.

Then we tried sweet potatoes in a wood crate and a cardboard box. Wound up with just under 6 lbs. Not great but it's a start. Apparently, the critters win unless we plant in tall raised beds, crates or bags/boxes. One of these days we'll figure it out.

Question have you ever checked on your parasite load as you deal with many different animals and you also do a lot of work on your garden with the manure and dirt they are loaded with parasites. Why I’m saying this is because I’ve been having issues and what I did was a parasite cleanse and now I’m ok. Hope this helps and I hope I don’t overstep myself just a suggestion.

Idea for food Justin & Rebecca I have and idea. You mentioned that you buy Avocados and Bananas and other foods you love since they obviously don’t grow in NC.
I have an idea that might help keep your family in lowering your food cost. Have you ever thought of trading food. For instance you could trade a variety of your Root Vegetables for Avocados, Bananas, Mango’s, Plantains ETC also meats could be traded for Seafood from the fisherman from Key West or some other coastal area in Florida. You have a variety of meats you could trade for Lobster, Crab, Shrimp, Fish, Clams, Scallops, Octopus Etc. from farmers in South Florida. I just had this idea while watching tonights TH-cam.
I and 67 female live in Ocala,Fl but my birthplace was Key West,Fl,
I lived in The Mountains of NC moved there in 1996 Boone/Watauga County and got a place in Todd/ in Ashe County. In 2007 and sadly my hubby died @ 54 years old in 2015. Then my family needed me in 2016 so I moved back to FL.
I absolutely love and miss the Carolinas and watchings so many of you on TH-cam who live there. I got Lyme in NC in 2002 and Dr’s couldn’t find out what was wrong for 4 yrs I became bedridden and wheelchair bound but eventually got treatment but couldn’t fully recover but have my mobility back. Everyday is a struggle between the Widespread Pain and Exhaustion. Thanks for all your encouraging Videos I truly enjoy your loving family. May God bless your family and keep it strong
    Take care, Valerie

I have a question. Can't you use leftover yogurt that you have made youself as a starter for the next batch? Then you would not have to buy another plastic container from the grocery solving two things, buying at the store and buying more plastic. I have done this with my own homemade yogurt and it works. Thanks for sharing!*

Have you looked into any of the starters from “cultures from health”? We make a kefir and it doesn’t require you to buy a starter every time- you can reuse and grow kefir grains

You basically only have meat and dairy which is impressive but to limit grocery you need a lot more. Nothing canned, preserved, stored. No grains, beans, pickled vegetables, fresh items, canned fruits, nuts. I know you’re between houses though, I’ve just never seen these items being prepared or stored at your farm.

They would benefit from learning from the Hollars. They eat so much from their farm and seem much more healthy.

The cold store was built a year ago. It’s totally empty and it’s only December.

@@CharlieNagoo agree. Meg has so much stored away and is always canning and pickling.

He pulled a bushel of potatoes, b. nut squash and pumpkins from their root cellar. I don't think they do much grain because of autoimmune issues.

@@botanicalbecca8443…and then the cold storage was empty. With the size of their gardens I would have expected it packed full in December.

Like the food haul but I'm wondering if you eat green beans, peas, broccoli, brussel sprouts? Soups and stews and casseroles are a life saver for me. I LOVE leftovers and not having to cook everyday! I do like picking a meat for a certain day and getting all the meat out of the freezer for the week. Love your family and praying Henry and Lily get better soon and no one else gets it although I know this was filmed probably a week ago and by now everyone in on the mend!

here's a tip for beating diseases. I always make juice for my children. blackcurrant or aronia berry, are definitely the best flu juice berries in terms of vitamin value. there can be other berries as well, such as blueberry, strawberry, raspberry, etc. all contain plenty of vitamin C, which is needed to overcome the disease. I boil a large amount of water until the frozen berries melt. as short a time as possible. puree until fine, let it cool for a while and strain. I add sugar, plenty of honey, fresh or dry ginger (a little), mint (a little). overcome diseases quickly with that. in a glass bottle, it will keep in the fridge for 2-3 weeks. 1-3 dl berries 1-2 liters of water

Do you order from azure standard. Lots of organic choices. Should be able to get organic corn meal. See lots of homesteaders use azure.

The white mold on the brick wall needs to be fixed before walls are closed up and brick walls with moisture coming through. The contractor should of addressed that before putting framing up. We have mold illness here too and just dont want yall getting sick or finding damage later down the road

Have you ever thought about canning some of your meat? It would make an easy quick meal for those busy days. I’m looking forward to more greenhouse/garden videos like what you use to make. Hope the kids are feeling better now. There’s some nasty virus out there this year.
