To be fair brutes also dont like following the orders of elites.
"THE PACK WILL FEAST ON YOU"
This also foreshadowed Thel’s arc and the Great Schism in Halo 2 & 3.
Even if Bungie hadn't come up with them, I'll just assume they were all in High Charity growing hair after looking in the mirror and realizing how ugly they were after the fall of Reach. (because they probably looked too human and had ugly tattoos) Which is why they didn't appear in CE lol
You heard the man. Space racism is good. Thankfully.
Maybe, you could do a short on that Engineer who fixed Chief’s shields in First Strike that an ONI officer (or marine, I forgot which) shot to prevent that information from getting out. It’s really too bad that the Engineers didn’t appear in the games until ODST. I’m sure you know about how they were originally planned to be included in CE. Truth and Reconciliation would’ve been the perfect mission to introduce them in the bridge area. Then they could’ve been seen in Forerunner structures that are important to the Covenant like what various mods do. Cortana could’ve had some dialogue telling the player not to shoot those things because they’re a non-threat and will just ignore you to do their work.
Damnn
The engineers were intended to be able to repair Covenant vehicles for you. They would've been a neat inhostile unit.
A lot of words for "they didn't add them yet."
So the real answer for anyone curious is development time and need, brutes don’t fill a gameplay role massively dissimilar to elites and lead were also more in line with halo core gameplay, balancing. Not to mention hello CE flew together in the last six months of production, adding an additional AI enemy unit was out of the question. The game was already leaps and bounds ahead of time in AI
Cause they weren’t invented yet. Lore wise I don’t care cause they weren’t made yet story wise

No wonder why tartar sauce hated him
Nah, tartar sauce is a twat
There also another reason why Abriter didn't trust brutes.

Brutes were used for heavy ship maintenance and fuel their star ship engines. This is a canon explanation from one of the terminals that involves shipmaster and arbi talking about the brutes place in the covenant before the schism
A space racist... Arbiter and Frieza gotta meet now.
He was right to caution himself. Brutes are volatile, most of the time.
2 reasons;
1) Thel Vaddem didn't accept them in his fleet. (expanded lore).
2) Bungie didn't come come up with Brutes at the time of Halo: CE.
Because they weren't even created yet
It’s part of why I love CE. I hate mods that bring them in.
There’s mods that add Brutes into CE with mixed results in terms of story and gameplay. SPV2/3, CE Canyon, and SOI’s CE mod are the most notable examples. It’s interesting thinking about what could’ve been if Bungie had the idea for Brutes sooner:
I like how in Reach you don’t really see Brutes and Elites fighting in the same groups. That’s a cool way to show the two don’t really get along. Unfortunately, that’s where the good things I have to say about Reach’s Brutes ends. They’re by far the WORST Brutes in the entire series. Instead of learning from their mistakes in 2 and 3/ODST Bungie combined the worst aspects of both and made the Brutes uninteresting enemies. The Reach Elites also stepped on the Brute’s toes by having them be seen using heavy weapons that Heavy Grunts and higher ranking Brutes would normally carry. Say what you will about Infinite (and I agree wholeheartedly there’s a lot to say. If there wasn’t you wouldn’t see numerous videos talking about the game’s shortcomings. For me the biggest one is the fact that they did a bad job explaining the Banished were and how they differ from the Covenant. Also, because their ideology is different we really should’ve had humans in their ranks), but as far as gameplay is concerned it gave us hands down the BEST version of the Brutes. They’re the perfect marriage of their 2 and 3 incarnations. Although, they’d be much better if they had their H2 aggression, could dual wield, and if the base ranks had more health. That’s how the Brutes should be going forwards.
Thel was more surgical. Having hammers in his tool bag would be a liability
What’s odder is the Master Chief didn’t encounter any Brutes until the book Operation: First Strike which is between CE and 2.
Especially when considering brutes were some of the first covenant species that humanity encountered. 2nd only to jackals.
That got retconned instantly like how The Fall of Reach says they didn't encounter Elites until Reach.
@mekboy7403 that was my initial gut reaction too but I can’t think of where that would’ve been changed. I think that stuck
He wasn't wrong either

I always thought there was just the one Covenant ship in the OG Halo and they just weren’t on it.
Like I thought the Long Night of Solace was the only one to send troops out.
The ironic part is the best way for bungie to do this was literally writing them in to the side
Because the ring forces were led by the inquisitor and were his troops without
Finally someone adds the ‘ee suffix to his name.
To be fair, he no longer is “Vadamee”, so I get why people don’t
No, he's just observing patterns...
Brutes are literally not just blacks, but could be realistically compared with any southern hemisphere colonial troops that more honor bound European armies would use as schock troops:
Zulus, Ghurkas, Moroccans, Congolese, Algerians...
Brutes were added to the Halo series due to a design competition that was run years ago in XBOX magazine. The magazine would publish various designs that had been sent in each week with a picture and short description of what the alien they had designed was like. The winner of the competition got their alien design added to the Halo games. I had the addition when the brute design was submitted, might still have it laying around somewhere. Seeing what a huge part of the lore they are now, the person who designed it should be very proud of themselves.
Would love to see that. Might be worth something these days
@@Woodyisasexybeast If it is still around, it has been in my loft for 20 odd years, so I can't imagine it's in great condition 😄, but I should take a look for it. We cleared a load of stuff out not too long ago, so it may well have been thrown away. I vaguely remember the design and the description said something along the lines of them being a rival faction to the elites within the covenant with a history of hating each other. We all saw that played out 😄.
@FoggyPigeon still a neat piece of history, either way
Well accordingly to the lore the Jiralhanae was also fresh joined into the Covenant... Prophets had seen in them the perfect puppets and warriors to substitute the "too much free" Sangheili in the empire so they both seized the moment when Thel 'Vadam failed to secure Halo, to change the guard and acquire power in the Empire.
It was a really delicate moment for the Empire and both Prophets and Brutes acted to disrupt the foundations of the Empire itself.
The first error was that of targeting humans despite they knew they wasn't heretics.
Second was that of destroy the foundation article of the Covenant, or the alliance and the roles of the two species in their new Empire.
The very presence of the Jiralhanae during Halo 2 and later works shown that the Empire was falling into doom.
Yes, the writ of union was the original agreement.
Such great lore
@@Woodyisasexybeast indeed. I feel nostalgic of the old Covenant. Despite being the main anthagonists, they had some range of realism, detailed lore, accurate development, from the bigger things till the smaller ones.
It's that the point that I blame about the Banished: it's not the same level of worldbuilding.
The Banished looks like just an "evil" copy of the old Covenant while they should be something new.
I play Stellaris with Halo mods, so I can design my factions as I want.
I've made anew two distinct versions of UEG/UNSC, one perfectly designed version of the Covenant empire, one for the Swords of Sangheilos, and two for the "post-Covenant".
Of of them is the "Reformed Covenant Empire" led by the Jiralhanae, with the traits and tech of the Covenant...
The other one is the "Banished Khanate", also led by the Jiralhanae, but with proper banished AND human technology.
Once the immigration treaty kicks in, these Banished are able to deploy human marines other than their own troops. They have mixed tech ships, and are not religious fanatics, but fanatical cooperatives. That mades them looking more close to the official lore, but at the same time also more realistic.
I think I'll play another game today. I really love to play this version of Halo. 🤣🤣🤣🫡
The banished are a lot better than they were depicted in Infinite. They lost a lot of the nuance because of the destruction of Doisac. Either way, they do have human members and nowadays, even a Spartan. That alone makes them way different than the covenant. Infinite really just didn’t articulate that well. I just hope they don’t shelve them whenever they decide to continue the story…
@@Woodyisasexybeast I lost a passage, there was any other game after Infinite?
Nah. Plenty of other lore stuff like a few books and a short stories but no games. No announcements of any kind at the recent Xbox showcase either so I don’t imagine there’s anything new on the horizon.
Well maybe because they didn't think about them yet The same thing would ahsoka from Star wars how come she's not in the old Star wars movie or that because they never thought about her before then
Or because the xbox ce came in on was VERY limited on gb
Space speciesist would be more accurate.
Either word works.
Somehow the brutes didn't show up
I'm guessing for the same reason Keys calls Cortana "the ship-board AI" about whom protocol is written. And for the same reason the monitor calls the master chief a reclaimer and later a forerunner. And for the same reasons the nameless black sergeant who does the commercial for the game definitely died with all the others as we see him hugging an elite standing on the ring as the Pillar of Autumn explodes a few hundred meters away. For that reason the brutes as well as the drones and prophets decided to also dip on the chase of the Pillar of Autumn.
the cole protocol was never written for cortana, it was never even written for AI, it was specifically, since before halo 1 even released, about any and all digital and physical data on a ship, space station or planet. if the covenant arrives, everything needs to be destroyed. 343 guilty spark hal always from halo ce onwards talked about chief as forerunner. In bungies halo, humans WHERE forerunners, thats what the entire human covenant war is about. Thats why 343 thinks the chief already did all this with him, thats why he assumes the chief already knows everything, THATS why he calls him reclaimer at all times, even in halo 3. because forerunners ARE reclaimers. Johnson you're spot on.
all that being said, lore reason and real life reason are 2 seperate things, and he is not wrong when he talks about the lore reason. The same way ppl are not wrong for saying the lore reason Johnson is still alive, is because hes got a disease from plasma grenade exposure that messes with his nerves, and escaped this way in a pelican with a small crew. (also the legendary cutscene was non canon in the first place, it was a joke, same as the thirsty grunts not being canon, or the grunt birthday skull)
We not gonna talk about his pronunciation?
Because they didnt come up with them yet lol
Creating an explanation when we all know they didn't exist yet. I'll take it though, space racist is creative.
Speciest
I just started playing Halo CE wtf are brutes
lol. You’ll find out in Halo 2
But wasn’t the covenant attacking in CE the same group that was attacking reach which did have brutes?
Yes and no. Several fleets attacked Reach. The one that contained brutes was not the Fleet of Particular Justice, Arby’s battle group. It was the Fleet of Valiant Prudence.
Canonical they were. Spv 3 is more accurate in that sense
Sometimes racism exist for a good reason
Because they didn't exist yet. It's literally that simple.
While this is a very cool and neat theory imo, canonically brutes were on Alpha Halo as told by Thel Vadam to the Prophet of Truth in the Halo 2 Collector's Edition manual:
"To Prophet of Truth Most high and honored Prophet: It is with the greatest shame that I lay myself before the judgment of the Council. I expect and will accept no mercy. My failure in this matter is absolute; I embrace my responsibility and await my punishment. The disgrace and blasphemy at Halo was an abomination caused by my incompetence and failure of judgment. Although the tales and rumors of the Demon have basis in fact, much of this talk is Unggoy superstition and exaggeration. Certainly the Demon, a Human, activated a catastrophic engine- failure sequence on the crashed Human vessel, but it was allowed to do so because of failures in security measures and tactics for which I bear full responsibility. I have no good news to relay, but the Human action was suicidal, either by accident or design. I believe none of them escaped the catastrophe. As ever, Jiralhanae accounts of the conflict are unreliable and their accounts of this Human's abilities and actions are absurd. No Human is capable of the things they gossip and chatter about. I suspect panic and excuse, as well as confusion caused by the spread of the parasite. The Human in question is certainly unusual, although not the creature it has been described as. It stands taller than most, is faster and more aggressive, but still irrevocably a Human animal, worthy of neither fear nor respect. It is merely an exception that proves the rule. As always, Humans remain beneath our contempt. Their failure at Reach compounds their defeat. We sense that their defenses are failing rapidly. I have gathered information on the Human's armor, abilities, and weapons, which follows this report. Perhaps more worrisome is the discovery and subsequent conflict with the parasite on Halo. This monstrosity festered, rotted, and waited on the Holy World, and although we cannot be sure, the Humans may have released it from its shackles. I do not presume to know the unknowable, but I suspect that the Forerunners meant this filth to stay imprisoned forever. The sacred grace of Halo was polluted before it was destroyed. I await my punishment with faith and honor. --Supreme Commander, Fleet of Particular Justice"
While this is a great pull and contains information I’ve never seen, I’m not sure it’s definitive evidence that brutes were actually present IN his fleet. Every other source contradicts this. CE, The Flood, and Fireteam Raven. I’m not sure whether to pin this or not. I’d like some clarification from 343.
@Woodyisasexybeast I agree. It also doesn't help with the evidence considering that the Flood was mostly based on Dietz' playthrough of CE, part of why at the library (might have been a different level) he has a shotgun instead of the usual MA5B, showing that he was playing on Easy difficulty as that's the only one in which you spawn with the shotgun on certain missions
But he had brutes at his command on Reach which was his forces
No, Reach was invaded by multiple battlegroups. The fleet of Valiant prudence is the one that had brutes, not the fleet of particular justice
Thel Wasn't really a space racist plus he never hated the brutes. He probably treated them a lot better than most elites. Did he just didn't trust them not to mention in present day, he does have brutes in his faction of the swords.
Elites are elite. Brutes are brute. Why would you willingly want a lower quality of soldier by your side doing a pale imitation of the same role
👴🏻literally me
Yeah that's not racism lol.
Lol in reality brutes werent invented until halo 2
Why weren't there skirmishers and drones
Drones actually were present during the battle on the ring. Chief doesn’t see them but they were deployed at alpha base and shown in Halo Fireteam Raven, which takes place during CE. Skirmishers on the other hand are extremely rare and shortly after Reach, they’re mostly extinct.
What about the Brutes on Reach?

Wait...Arby was a Space Racist? 😂
The developers didn’t create them yet duh
Is there a lore reason that there are no Elites in Halo 3: ODST?
Yes. There actually are elites in ODST though. Just dead ones. You can find their bodies in a few areas of the Mombasa streets. Tayari plaza, for example. Their absence elsewhere is due to the great schism. If you remember, during Halo 2, truth ordered the brutes to take the elites positions of power and eventually he tasked Tartarus with killing Thel (Arby). The elites still on earth were likely murdered by brutes.
Because bungie hadn’t invented them yet. All this is just a wordsalad
