GM made a presentation to SAE [Society of Automotive Engineers] on the Spark EV, describing why they used a 400 lb-ft motor. Basically a lower numerical gear reduction provided a better driving feel, with less “reflected inertia. They compared other EVs to driving a manual ICE car in second gear. Also, they wanted to build a quick hatch. 😀

As a retired old fart, although not living in a retirement community, I love my 2016 Chevy Spark EV. I would love to see you run against a Mini Electric since aside from range performance is not too far off. BTW, I thoroughly enjoy embarrassing many V8 powered SUVs, pick up trucks, Miatas, and various vehicles with loud pipes in my funny looking retirement golf cart in the many stoplight gran prix especially leaving those who switched to the right lane who plan to beat you out then cut back in front of you only to be left gawking. Also, I believe your both already eligible for AARP at 45+. Do the Mini next could be fun but you may have issues fitting in it.

Yea, Sparky for the win! I have surprised a lot of ICE cars from the stoplight in my 2016 Spark EV even with “only” 327lb ft of torque. Anyone that does not realize how much fun they are needs to drive one, if you can find one.
327 lbs of torque? Goddam that’s a little more than my v8 Mustang 2003.
I looked it up it says 97 lbs of torque which isn’t bad for a small car.

i believe the spark has a quirk where going to 50% throttle until 35mph or so and then going to 100% yeilds a faster 0-60. Someone on the forums tested this with good results

I have fun racing kids on noisy, jacked up trucks. In a '16 Spark EV and a '19 Bolt EV. They all end up catching up at the next light and looking at me with a weird look that can translate roughly into "What the #^&% is that thing?".

@@angelgjr1999 got to remember and that is with low rolling resistant tires, with some stickier tires you can drop a second or two off of that.

The reason GM only sold 7000 Spark EVs is not because they had flaws, it's because that's all they needed to sell for compliance. My Spark EV and plenty of others have been flaw free
It kinda sucks they gave up on the spark ev, it's I think the smallest ev ever sold commercially and was way ahead of it's time. I just bought my 2022 spark (which is gasoline) and word is they too are going bye bye 😭
@@resetsetmefree478there is a smaller EV. It’s the smart fortwo. Also a blast, but not as torque happy as the spark. It is also right(rear) wheel drive and was available as cabrio.

12:36 you do have a triple secret sport mode. traction control off and unlock full 120kW of power at low speed by feathering throttle. Or as the instruction manual in the car says, half throttle until 34 mph then fully depress with traction control enabled.

0.3 seconds is not "wayyyyy off"...
@@lfsracer79 The Spark EV 0-60 times are done with stock tires, which are low rolling resistance all season tires. I used to have a 2002 lexus IS300 which stock does 0-60 in 7.4 seconds. My spark EV has Yokohama Advan Flava's on it and I guarantee you it is faster 0-60 than that IS300.
Took a big hit on range with them tho.

Hey everyone! Been modifying my 2016 Spark EV with coilovers suspension bushings, race seat, aero and a whole bunch of little cosmetic mods to fit it’s personality. Throttle controllers actually work for EV th-cam.com/video/_oPnU_PDxSY/w-d-xo.html I have almost removed the torque limiter to 30 with an aggressive throttle setting. Also don’t be fooled by GM making the rest of the Spark 327ftlbs as it has a 3.8 final drive that puts the axle torque a smidge higher than the 400ftlbs at 3.1 final drive.
Only thing missing is circus music and the sound of the Roadrunner leaving the Coyote in the dust🤣

I mean, the range comparison wasn't exactly fair. You should have said how many wH of energy was used rather then what the guess-o-meter says. Like I said in the previous video, the spark changes it's guess pretty quickly, so it was changing your estimate based on if you kept driving the way you had been. You probably didn't actually lose 8 miles of range, considering I have had times where I gained 5 miles of range driving 20 miles. Either way it was an entertaining video, hope to see more soon!
The second gen LEAF PLUS trims would beat them both (but not the Taycan, lol). The base model gets 40 extra HP vs the first gen, the 2nd PLUSes get an extra 115 HP vs the originals.
Any way to disable the torque management system? A tire roasting spark would be a thing of beauty lol

Gm hired a 3rd party company to make the battery cells for this spark and they went ham. Then Gm didn't sell any so they clipped this car in Ev form.
I thought the Taycan would be quicker 0-60 than that, I'm really not impressed for $140k
Tesla Plaid is irreleveant. The volume of sales of Plaid is too insignificant to matter. what matters is cheap mass electric cars which will sell millions of copies per year.

B mode on the leaf literally means brake mode, making the car slower, to go faster you need to turn the eco mode off by pressing the eco button on the wheel

you have to half throttle it up to 35 and then full throttle after that. Much faster if you do that. (i have a 2015 model)

we need "in town" drag races. Like fastest to 40 MPH drag races. Traffic light to traffic light, yet never braking the 40 MPH speed limit. A "Who can get to the doughnut shop faster" race. Love 0-60 races, but in normal driving often I have owned vehicles that vehicle A may be slower to 60 MPH than vehicle B............ the "faster" vehicle B was actually slower 0-35/40 MPH. All in how the power band and gearing was set up. :-D

Out of curiosity was this done by flooring the Spark EV? If so, this video suggests you may get better acceleration by pushing half way up to 35 mph then fully flooring it ( th-cam.com/video/snx-yamq8XU/w-d-xo.html ). They were testing a 2016, however it looks like section 9-20 (pg ~212) of the 2014 manual also has that torque limiting "feature". It would be interesting to see a video about half+floor vs flooring this on your torquey 400 ftlb 2014 model.

Yep.. I picked one that sold Volts and Bolts for the past few years. In fact when I had my car inspected there they had another Spark EV waiting for customer pickup. This is in Pittsburgh PA.
Honestly I’m way more interested in this video than in pretty much any other drag race videos, which have basically become noise competitions at this point.

I like the Spark EV. I had one of the early ICE models. It did it's job as an economical little puddle jumper. We still ended up with a 2012 LEAF SL for the neighborhood runabout because we found one with a bad charger for $3500. We replaced the charger ourselves and are in it for less than a Spark. That said, if the LEAF were to be totalled, I'd keep the Spark on our short list.
It would be cool taking out all the unnecessary stuff on the Chevy Spark EV to make it as light as possible. Just leave 2 seats and tint the back windows so no one knows it has been stripped and compare the previous 0-60 time with the new 0-60 time.
Spark EV is a great car. It wasn't cancelled because of problems. It was only available in certain CARB states. It was replaced by the Bolt.
what about the Taycan 4S lap time?

I think the LEAF is one of the coolest cars ever made. I was finally able to pick one up in 2020.
