To all of us who has actually followed Kevin since his dad was a "young driver with a talented son", there is literally 0 surprise here. The only surprise is the Haas car actually being pretty good - yet still a midfield car. Kevin has had the same issue his dad did with Steward Ford - namely being from Denmark which doesn't invest that much in motorsports. So Kevin has limit funds to bring with him into a team - which means he get the lower end cars. NO ONE who doesn't have a hell of a lot of talent stays in F1 for 6-7 years with limited funds. If he was a bad driver then he would have been in and out in a year or two. Kevin has consistently outperformed other drivers when the cars are actually equal - and that hasn't changed. Also the press likes a "good" story - so they focused on the rivalry and "radio clips" aimed at Kevin... The simple fact is this though: you can find clips of drivers complaining like that about every driver on the grid! Racing drivers whine a lot over the radio in general - hell even Kimi did! They are operating under insane amounts of adrenaline so it's only natural.
Now why does drivers like Alonso have an issue with Kevin? Because you can't bully Kevin! He doesn't back down from a fight and he doesn't get intimidated by drivers who thinks lesser of him. The "turn 7, 11 and 12" clip from Alonso is a perfect example of this! Kevin is in front - and has the rights to the racing line. Alonso drives super aggressively and overcommits several times - but where other drivers gets scared and backs off Kevin sticks with it - resulting in an entitled super whine session from Alonso. Seriously look at the clip and ignore who is driving and actually analyze it. There is only 1 course correction each time - towards the racing line... Perfect defensive driving - yet people were giving him crap about it! Actually hilarious!
And yes - I am 100% certain that he will be World Champion if anyone ever gives him a chance in an actual top car. There is 0 doubt in my mind.

There is a flaw to this argument though; if being from Denmark is an issue and the reason why he gets lower end cars: why did McLaren drop him after bringing him into f1? wouldn't he keep the mclaren seat if he was a clear top driver?

@@alvmusic4402 There was quite a bit of debate at the time. The decision was made late, but mclaren knew their pace was going in the wrong direction, so in the end they wanted two world champions as drivers instead of one world champion and a rookie with 1 year of experience.

kevin has always been very underrated! honestly, for most of his seasons, he managed to score points in a car not good enough for it. and for several of the incidents, the other drivers have admitted after the race that it was as much their fault as kevin's, but that just never get reported on. kevin is not a driver that yields. it has always been frustrating to me that verstappen gets praised for that while magnussen has always been criticised for it. hulk was the one who started the feud, k-mag just defended himself. if you place kevin in a top team, chances are that he has a very real chance of becoming world champion. i think he has spent most of his years in f1 trying to get that chance, which meant he put so much pressure on himself that he easily got frustrated - especially when he saw money drivers or rookies got the chance. i think he sees his return to f1 as a blessing and is racing without all the pressure and without other ambitions other than doing a great job for haas.

What, how do you know the car isnt good? The car looks to be much better than anyone expected but MAYBE is held back by poor drivers? And objectively, why was there discussions about who was worst, KMag or Grosjean, why would he end up in the bottom fight, are you suggesting a conspiracy? What kind of unfair judgement has this two times washout been the victim of? We had to endure a lot of pretty poor drivers in F1, and you claim a great driver was kept out for unexplainable reasons, by all the teams?

Kev's obvious talent and lack of respect for the established names caused him to get a fair bit of flak during his early years in F1. It always weirds me out to hear people gush over Senna or Verstappen and then trash MAG. We'll probably never know how good he could perform in a race winning car, but I suspect that he would be win podiums galore.

There’s enough evidence to suggest it! Also he doesn’t bring in the big money, and teams have chosen him for his talent rather than big money. If you notice, he’s also one of the best starter I’ve seen on the grid, consistently wins position, race after race.
He did get podium early on in a declining McLaren. That result wasn’t beaten until recently. The only reason why he got kicked out of McLaren was because KMAG was Whitmarsh’s project, throughout his youth career directly up to F1, but Whitmarsh ultimately lost the power struggle against a looming Ron Dennis, who shouldn’t have anything to do with the sport ever again after spygate. He discarded KMAG pretty fast as well, and McLaren was free falling afterwards.
Another thing that’s worth noticing is, that KMAG is Danish, and on the surf race you may think, and so what? Denmark is a small population, and that’s a deterrence factor for the car dealership market, furthermore taxes are some if not the highest in the world , add to that, it’s a country that bet on green and renewed energy, and there’s not a lot of rich people who is interested or wish to sponsor automobiles. Because of these factors, you won’t see a lot of Danish drivers in any motor sports, their talent has to be extraordinary if they have to make it through. They have to punch above their weight, in order to make it worth while. That’s KMAG. Also his dad paved the way and had connections, and many regard his father to be the best Danish talent ever despite Tom Kristensen because of his excellent versatility. KMAG is a bigger talent than his father.
KMAG is not really a unique case in F1, in terms of coming back.. twice and not being a champion that’s unique, but there’s been many whose got the talent in a car that didn’t justify their talent or they’re cursed with external things like crashes or strategies that wasn’t their fault, but they associate with it, so there’s that. KMAG is one of those, Grosjean as well!
I think there’s so much data and discussion out today that everyone digest. Most can do their own research and I think it shows. Many F1 fans are actually really good to discern what is what.

Yes, he is good, and always has been. Maybe he has matured when it comes to the sketchy defending and dirty tactics he used to be known for, but the talent has always been there. Magnussen is not the kind of driver that performs miracles in bad cars, but give him a decent car, and he delivers. He did so in 2018, the last time Haas was actually decent before this season, and for McLaren in 2014.
I'm always astounded by the negative comments about his stint at McLaren, as well as Perez' the year before, and my takeaway is that Jenson Button must be the most underrated World Champion in F1 history. I mean, the guy beat Hamilton in 2011 and Alonso in 2015. What exactly did people expect from Perez and Magnussen in the years in between? Magnussen in particular did really well considering he was a rookie. Of course he made mistakes. That should be expected. But he showed more than just flashes of talent. It wasn't even a Tsunoda situation, where the rookie driver has two good races all year, and that's enough to convince everyone that the talent is there. If people had half as much patience with Magnussen as they have with the likes of Tsunoda or Mick Schumacher, his career could have taken a very different path.

@@4MLA1 Erhm yeah I guess he is better than Sainz by that metric then. :-D The fact is that the back end spun out due to the track being slippery as hell - and other drivers went off in the same corner - including Verstappen.
Also - calling the Australian Grand Prix "disappointing" and using that as any kind of metric here is kinda iffy. First off Kevin was sick. 2nd their strategy got royally F-ed once again by a poorly timed safety car, so all the cars starting on the hard tire got majorly screwed, while all the others got a free pitstop.
But yes I can agree with you on the save being well done by Kevin - however it was also pretty damn lucky to be fair :-D If he didn't have JUST enough momentum to escape the gravel he would have been stuck, if he had a TINY bit more momentum he would be in the wall, and finally the car survived undamaged. So yeah if you want to say it was mostly luck or skill that he even got that lap in purely depends on the tint of the glasses you view it in! I'm in the "all skill" camp! I have zero doubt he's a high-end driver. He has the raw speed and he's god in the wet. Not afraid of battles, doesn't back down (no matter if it's Alonso or Hulkenberg) and will defend his position to death. A few things to note:
-wrong passport: this translates to smaller sponsor money, lower numbers, doesn't market so well. and indirectly it will mean lower end car. if he was British or German he's already 3x WDC.
-some stupid moves in the past: while having the racecraft, he did make some questionable moves and unsmart management. reputation is hard to undo, especially when media will support anything that Verstappen does (or hamilton or any multichampion for that matter) while k-mag is "BAD PERSON" if he does the same.
-fans are stupid and will repeat anything that their favorite driver says. "turn 7, 11 12" yea what about those turns? kevin was in front all the time, wtf were they expecting, he had to back off so that alonso could pass? grow some balls ffs it's racing
