Then later, Detroit gave Jordan's Bulls all the heartbreaks he could handle and thus made them have the moral and physical fiber to capture all those titles. So, MJ, you owe Philly a "Thank you."

So many sports historians are wrong when romanticizing the rivalry of Celtics vs Lakers in the 1980s. The best rivalry by far in the 1980s was Celtics vs Sixers.
I decided to watch this today , the day after the clippers lost a series after leading 3-1. the year before this playoff series, the sixers had a 3-1 series lead and next year they came back and got to the finals
I'd say the biggest blown chance was 85. They crushed LA 148-114 in Game 1 and then laid an egg in Game 2 and lost from there. Had they come focused and not overconfident in Game 2 and win, the Celtics likely win the series. It was also the first year of the 2-3-2 format and after DJ hit the game winner in LA in Game 4 to tie it at 2-2, the series would've gone back to Boston and very likely things would've played out just like they did in 84. 88 was also a blown year after stealing a game in Detroit in the ECF to regain home court, they promptly lost the next game in Boston and lost in 6. I think the 88 Celtics would've had a much better chance against the Lakers that year than they did in 87 when the only healthy player they had was Bird.
This game was originally tape delayed. The " beat la"s hant is my favorite sports moment that doesn't involve a player . Philly had to wait a little longer. If they only had Moses earlier.
Man..I was 11 year old watching this game. Andrew Toney not being able to stay healthy led to that sixer era coming to an end more than anything. This was only his 2nd year in the league. He would have been in his prime when they drafted Barkley but he had those bad Bill Walton feet
By the time they got Moses, who was still in his prime, Dr J was just exiting his. Then shortly afterward, Andrew Toney had foot problems. So it was a one year dominant hurrah.
From a Philly fan......TOTAL CLASS. But it took Moses (Malone) to deliver the Sixers to the Promised Land the next year. The last time they won a title.
Yeah, all that team needed was a few more possessions during games, and Moses could deliver that about as well as anyone ever could on a night in, night out basis.. Plus 25-30 points on most nights.. I’m still convinced that was the best team of the 80’s..
Julius last 3 plays of 3rd quarter was crucial. 2 shots and the block. Huge momentum to start that 4th quarter. Andrew Toney was like an itch in the middle of your back that you can't reach....looking and searching for anything frantically to get some ducking relief! The relief: DJ and ankle and foot problems for Toney.
I watched this game as a 14 year old. Laker fan for life! Hated the Celtics even then, so to hear that chant gets my blood boiling! Any Celtics loss is a good thing! 1983 when we lost to Philly was the only time in my life I felt good about losing a championship. Didn't want it to happen yet felt so good for Dr. J to finally wear the ring. One of my favorite players ever!!
This is neat. My father in law told me a story about this game. But Celtics fan and went to every single game back then. He mentioned being in the standing room only banging on the heating ducts and just started screaming BEAT L.A. and all of the sudden the next thing he knew, the entire Garden was screaming it along with him. He also started the “See you Sunday” chant in another series as well.
My dad has talked about yelling curse words at Tiny for being out and Ainge for not playing well lol. This game is the biggest reason Boston went and got DJ. Tiny was no match for Andrew Toney.
Can't believe that this was the last time the sixers beat the celtics in a series!!! Well they are ahead three 2 now hopefully on Thur they can win for the first time in 41 years!!!!!
Just listen to the volume of those fans! Unreal. Everyone today is droned out on cell phones. And THIS was real basketball, not the 3-point fiesta it is nowadays.
Sixers - 120; Celtics - 106. Sixers outscored the Celtics in the 3rd period by a 34-19 margin to lead 83-71. Then, the Sixers outscored the Celtics again by a margin 37-35. The third quarter was the turning point in this game.
Who says the Doc can't hit from the outside? He was streakey but when the "Chips were on the table"in this game he won for the Sixer's from the outside!!
Steven Pleasant in the aba where the talent was much less than the NBA Doc would just rise up and nail a 10 to 15 ft bankshot almost at will! I have a 1978 nba broadcast where analyst John Havlecek is telling the other announcers that the person guarding Erving should force him towards the baseline because, "Erving certainly is a great bankshot shooter!!
***** Plus underneath the basket there was nobody better off the glass! He could put it up left handed off the glass with right hand English.....or as Bill Russell said, "If Erving gets the bàll underneath the basket there's a million different ways he can shoot it!"
Not a chance the sixer's basically kicked boston's butt for 3 straight years and nearly gave away the series the following year , with all due respect it was a major league choke job
A big testament to how much Bird dominated Dr J which is a myth... till 83 the Sixers were the real power house in the east Period and Dr J was all over the stat sheet..everyone knows that you had to watch for steals blocks and fast breaks against the Sixers they could turn any game into a dunk fest anytime at will..in 81 it was the refs that allowed the Celtics dirty shenanigans in game 6 to destroy the game and turn it into chaos so they could stop and reverse the Sixers runaway momentum.. If Bird and Dr J were both in their prime it would have been total warfare between the two best sf of all time each with his advantages over the other!

Basketball was better back then.the atmosphere the colors the character of the players it was a better time in sports period
I would have traded this win for game 6 in Philly!
Had to come here after klay said “boston fans has no class” breh. That beat la chant gives me chills.
Very classy, goosebumps
Andrew toney was the difference
My dad has talked about yelling curse words at Tiny for being out and Ainge for not playing well lol. This game is the biggest reason Boston went and got DJ. Tiny was no match for Andrew Toney.
Nor was Ainge or Henderson.
Where can i find complete footage of Game 1 of 1982 ECF ? This game has some massive dunks by Dr. J
Can't believe that this was the last time the sixers beat the celtics in a series!!! Well they are ahead three 2 now hopefully on Thur they can win for the first time in 41 years!!!!!
They play a Game 7 today!!!!
@@adamdorgant9454 don't remind me!!!
and they lost again.
@@j.r.h.9265 not surprised at all! They gave up!!
A great series!
Its over!?
Greatest city in the world. Greatest fans in the United States (I wouldn't even TRY to compare us to some futbol fans around the world).
Boston fans have class. They're crazy lol but they definitely have class.
Just listen to the volume of those fans! Unreal. Everyone today is droned out on cell phones. And THIS was real basketball, not the 3-point fiesta it is nowadays.
Philadelphia and Houston really waited NBA Fans 4 years for Bird and Magic to meet up in the Biggest stage
I HATE THE CELTICS, I HATE CELTICS FANS ..... but damn that was a class act
I still remember watching this game back in the day and did not believe Philly could win a deciding game in Boston until Toney and Erving took charge.
I thought that Boston was going to get all the calls in this game, but like you said, Toney and Erving took over
To me this was as big as winning the title the next year. Because of who it was (Celtics) and where it was (Boston Garden) 🏡
Sixers - 120; Celtics - 106. Sixers outscored the Celtics in the 3rd period by a 34-19 margin to lead 83-71. Then, the Sixers outscored the Celtics again by a margin 37-35. The third quarter was the turning point in this game.
The sound is way off
Inject this team into the Sixers veins today at 3:30
It’s gonna happen! It’s time
@@Mambabwoy248 I think you’re right 🤝🏾

The Boston Strangler. Deadly sniper.
Plus in game 7 they were basically letting anything go
This was the first year the NBA went to the break away rims.
76ers execute super upset julius erving excells greatness love bill russell commentator
This is a game and a series that no one in the media seems to remember. Could it be because ESPN is closer to Boston than to Philadelphia?
Beat LA.......when you can't get the job done yourself....
Who says the Doc can't hit from the outside? He was streakey but when the "Chips were on the table"in this game he won for the Sixer's from the outside!!
garyt True Doc did have an outside shot
Sync is off.
I'm from Philly and Boston fans are The Best in each sport.
The game where "BEAT LA" Originated.

Ainge wasn’t slow 😳😳
If you want something done, do it yourself
They didn't in fact, Beat LA.
Yup but they did it 82.
"Be L.A. Be L.A''
Not a chance the sixer's basically kicked boston's butt for 3 straight years and nearly gave away the series the following year , with all due respect it was a major league choke job
Didn't they sweep Magic after this💀
Andrew Tony strangled Boston and they gave the game MVP to Dr. J. LOL!
It was more of what philly didn't do than what Boston did playoff basketball every possession counts you can't win taking silly shots
No one beat LA that year but the soxers did it in 83 abd then the celtics did it in 84.
You imagine what Kevin Durant would do lord have mercy
Celtics vs 76ers big enemies in 80s
