played against him in high school...it was the most ridiculous thing ive ever seen..the thing is they had 2 more guys that were really good...they played their home games at va. state college so many people wanted see him play...when we played them at our little gym lefty, john lucas and len elmore were high fiving and going crazy because he signed a letter of intent to go to maryland he was skinny as a rail but quick as a cat...

Long time ago, but will never forget the greats of the 70's, 80's and 90's when basketball was everything and the money and bags as they call it now (Was Very Important, We All Gotta Live And Support Our Families), but it 💰 didn't determine a guys love for competition to compete and to become the best player he could....

How can a 3 time MVP that is so high up in the scoring and rebounding categories be so underrated?! He deserves more recognition. Truly one of the greatest players of all time.
A lot of the 70s players get a bad rap because everyone thinks it was a weak era. Shit even Kareem kind of gets shafted by the media still.
He started playing in the 70s which was an often forgotten era in general (people forget about Bob McAdoo a lot too).
Then his championship run was sandwiched in between the era defining Bird-Magic rivalry so he kinda got lost in the shuffle when talking about the 80s. Only real ones talk about Moses.

Dr. J, Cheeks, Toney.....they were so good that everybody individually probably didn't seem as great as they were because nobody had to carry the team ever. Before that, he carried a Houston team that couldn't quite get over the hump, so like you said, he was overshadowed. If he played for Boston or LA, you'd be talking about someone recognized similarly to Shaq or Kareem.

When he first started he was a PF back in the ABA. Once he came to the NBA he did not have the muscle to handle the Center position. But once he did Moses Malone was a monster under the rim.
If he played for Boston or LA people would talk about him in the top 5 list every day. Sickeningly underrated!

@Man E Mr. J It wasn't just the top-tier talent Kareem had. The man trained with Bruce Lee, which had been beneficial for his 20-year career, and was practically injury-free, except for the 1980 Finals were he fractured his foot in game 5.

Don't get me wrong, Cap is still "THE🐏GOAT" period!!! But for that moment in time he was not the best...it was Moses Malone. The greatest offensive rebounder to EVER lace 'em up.

Moses was a great player & center. When Hakeem Olajuwon was a young man he'd work with Moses on his post moves & it made Hakeem not only one of the greatest big men ever but a Hall of Famer. RIP Moses....
Moses Malone was a Beast...........at 6" 10 he was not a tall center, but damn, he out muscled, out worked an outplayed centers he faced. Kareem had no answer for him in the 83 Finals, granted by this time Kareem was no spring chicken.

There were partys when we landed moses in 1982. The first preaseason game was against boston at the garden and it felt like game 7 ( we won)
There was a meet the press type show in first week of season, and one of the press types predicted that philly wouldnt lose a playoff game on the way to the title. He was close, and what a year we had.

Highest rebound average in the finals ( 29.5)
This is while guarding 1-5 sticking guards/forwards on the perimeter and switching/hedging on screens while chamberlain mostly sat around the basket (watch film of those games)

Moses, Dennis, Charles, Larry, Karl, Oakley, Shaq, Admiral, Mahorn, guys in the 80's and 90's, when the league had many teams with serious talent, they would have averaged the same if not more during Wilt and Bill's era.
Thats not taking anything away from Wilt and Bill, but it does factor in talent levels league wide imo.

Wow this really opened my eyes. I’m starting to build my basketball knowledge and it blows me away I don’t know more about Moses. Always heard his praises from Chuck but man he was extremely skilled AND dominant. Out there dunking and tipping in shots on Kareem. And I had no idea they won the chip that year!! I love stuff like this cause it always helps shape my perspective on the history of the league

Moses was all hustle and grit. He wasn’t blessed with an arsenal of Hakeem like moves, but he was so effective. He thoroughly dominated Kareem in the 81 and 83 playoffs

Moses Malone was straight out of high school into the NBA he was unstoppable on the offensive and defensive boards and also in the low post. This is the only NBA player that I know who dominated Kareem Abdul Jabbar in the low post.
With his style of playing he could easily be dominant also in today’s game!

All the NBA fans I knew as a youngster knew the Sixers were going to win it all when they acquired Moses...and they did.
Celtics ML Carr did too. Julius Erving said in his autobiography he ran into Carr overseas the summer Philly signed Moses. Doc said Carr told him "you guys just won the championship."
