I know what you mean! I was so excited to find this channel and then Steve passed shortly after. 😢❤️ Shotgun Red was my childhood! I didn’t live in TN at the time but did get to take my Dad to Nashville and see the grand ol opery as well as eat at the nascar restaurant. Bucket list items for my Dad 💜 Love to people can live on through TH-cam!!! 😍🥰❤️
I just discovered Shotgun Red yesterday. I'm so sorry to find out that this great guy is gone. Our condolences to Sheila and all the family and friends who knew Steve and miss him so much. Thank you Steve. You are greatly missed.
I watched this video if I'm not mistaken...don't remember any comments about him passing...My Condolences to Sheila,Family,Friends & Fans 🙏😘 Seeing him today I wish I hadn't forgot & watched more often...😘
Awe, I just stumbled upon this video as I was cooking country fried pork chops. I had to stop & come & sit down & see the face behind this enthusiastic voice I was listening to from the kitchen. I was dismayed & utterly SHOCKED to see that this extremely "spry guy" (lol) had passed!!! I am so sorry to the family & to the oh-so-famous Sheila he kept talking about! lol He was so adorable talking about you Sheila! It's blatantly obvious how much you were/are loved! He made me laugh when he said he wanted to set up at the fair & "make a million dollars!" lol This kind of love & appreciation from a man is definitely PRICELESS & I'm sure that these video memories are too! God bless!
I've watched nearly all his videos, and he was ALWAYS a down-to-earth, fun guy. Sincere condolences to Sheila and the family, and Shotgun Red is truly missed by so many.
Seeing Steve still brings a bittersweet smile to my face and always lifts my spirits! Has anyone experimented with different beers like a Porter or IPA and found any flavor improvement?
I tried this recipe tonight and even used the leftover batter to fry fish. It was a total success, I and my wife, loved the onion rings and the fish! I have tried to make fried onion rings in the past, but failed every time until following your recipe. Delicious!
Oh Shelia I miss him so much. I can only imagine how you feel. I love going back and just watch and listen to him talk about his recipes. He’s feeding all the Angels in Heaven. May he Rest in Paradise. Love to you and the family
This channel is the gift that keeps on giving. Steve's method for keeping the breading to stay on works beautifully. Like Jack Chaplin and Justin Wilson Steve's recipes are a national treasure. While they have passed their legacy continues.
Thank you Steve We miss you so much I am so glad Sheila has continued your channel. My son-in-law made these for us last evening I can say they are the BEST ever onion rings I have ever had. They were so crispy and good. We will be making these again for sure.
Oh, no! I was just going to comment on what a funny and likable character Mr. Shotgun Red is and then I saw the comments and the sad news. I just made this recipe tonight and THANK YOU!! It was my first time making onion rings and I’m happy to say it was a pleasant experience. I used bud light as my beer and I absolutely loved the flavor. I had a perfect sauce to go with my rings, thank you for showing us this recipe.
I've been a professional Chef for 35 yrs. Steve "Shotgun Red" has always been my favorite. His recipes and tips are spot on. So sorry he passed, I loved his voice and watching him cook. R.I.P. Steve.
I fell in love with Red, The way he talks. He is the most authentic guy on the entire food Internet world. His onion rings are so good. I made them so many times. So crispy and perfect. God, i wish he was still here to tell him how much I miss his friendly voice and his natural way. I will be making his onions rings for my entire life. And Sheila, you can steal one any time you like. 💔
I'm so sorry to hear that Shotgun Red has passed away. I've been watching his videos for a while and I just really enjoy his pizaz. He just has a way of lighting up a room and bring a smile to people faces and a good belly chuckle and making you feel comfortable like you're in his living room. He was such a talented chef too! May he rest in peace with all the beer he can drink in heaven. So sorry for your loss. Such a great guy. 😇❤❤
Everything he does is super good! I'm sorry to here he passed. Such a good soul and the world will not be the same. Thank God we have Miss Sheila video taping all this! I'm watching all his vids!
Searched "best home made onion rings" and found this fine gentleman! I cooked along with him and did everything he said. Came out PERFECT. I enjoyed his jokes and how you could tell how much he loves Sheila. I read the comment below that he has passed away. I'm sorry for this loss and I am honored to keep making his delicious onion rings.
I just discovered the tragic news. Miss Sheila and family may you be comforted. I tried the Potato Bread - Bread pudding and it was excellent. Thank you for inspiring thousands of cooks Red. I know God needs a great chef like you working for Him. Peace and grace
We are so sorry to hear of Steve's passing. We feel like he was an old friend. Watching him cook and talk was always so enjoyable. An interesting and nice man. God bless you Sheila.
I watched the entire video, will be using this recipe. Scrolled to find the link to print only to find out that he passed away. I will think of his cheery presence and funny presentation on this video each time I make these onion rings. Love to your family

RIP, Steve. Just found out now on his passing. Thank you for all the excellent recipe videos that I'll continue to enjoy watching. Another great cook passed away recently I was following, Jack Chaplin, Daddy Jack's, Cooking With The Blues. He's got some great cooking videos too.
I’m so sorry for your loss 🥺 His passion and wonderful personality will entertain and educate generations to come, I’m sure of it.😌 I wanted to let you know I just made these onion rings & everything he suggested to do was right on. I tried doing onion rings in the past & always have had a hard time & not the best results.Using his tips & tricks I made the BEST onion rings ever !!!! 🥰
Most scrumptious! The perfect onion rings! My daughter (Possum)and I are going to substitute large shrimp for onion slices to explore the potential taste explosion!May GOD bless your family!

Your a cute couple and wanted to say thank you both so much for all you shared with the world between cooking good food and teaching all of us that tuned in how to be a playful couple. With all my heart I am sorry for your loss Sheila and for all of your families loss. May he rest well in heaven and may God be with your family. He is missed and hold your head up and know you both helped make the world a better place.
I LOVE HOMEMADE ONION RINGS. I make them sometimes, and because I love onions so much, I make a two ring onion ring. I make different batters, but oil I cook in, is always peanut oil. The flavors are outstanding. Much better than any restaurant or frozen brand onion rings I've ever tasted.
First time I seen anyone do onion rings and not destroy them. They are so perfect. First ever of his videos I've seen. Can easily tell he is a warm sensitive caring man. Heaven has another hero. What an awesome man.
Oh Boy🥰❤❣ Not only does this recipe sound just like my Mama's did when I was a little girl and I'm 61 years old now, But they even sounded crunchy and crispy just like my Mama's did. The only thing different thing that she did, it was used my Daddy's favorite "Coors beer" I don't know how he could of ever drank Coors 😳😟😩Giggles🤭...God Rest Her Soul. So, I'm so excited to try this for my grandkids and Great grandkids and I have 2 of my Great grandkids that love Onion Rings. I just haven't been able to find anything as close to hers and yours does. Thanks so much for sharing with all of us 🥰❤❣
Probably a good way to do a blooming onion as well. I will definitely keep this recipe and thanks so much for the tips on how to make the batter adhere to the onions.
For something so simple Sonic and other places charge a lot for a few onion rings. I use to work at Sonic and sometimes I get cravings but then I watch this video and realize that it's easy and I can drink my beer. Thanks for keeping this channel alive with wonderful memories of how Steve enjoyed life.
I’m so sorry for your loss, Sheila. I first saw one of Steve’s videos when he made the 2 ingredient pizza crust. I make it all the time and it always turns out great. So now I have to make these onion rings! RIP Steve. ❤️
I just happened upon Shotgun Red's channel and have been writing down his recipes and they look great. Sorry to learn he passed on a year ago but it's nice he continues on because of his videos. Seems to have been a heck of a guy, his family was blessed to have him.
I watched this video once before about a year ago and was introduced to the Frank's sweet chili sauce. I've been using it ever since. It goes great with my chicken tenders, as well as grilled pork chops. Thank you so much for expanding the range of my taste buds.
YES! These ARE the BEST Beer Battered Onion Rings! I make them ALL the TIME when I want Onion Rings, This is my GOTO Recipe for them! NOTHING ELSE WILL DO! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
I can't watch any of these videos without smiling multiple times. If I ever need to lighten up, I'll cue one of these up. Some I've seen more than once. The recipes are first rate and the cooking fun, but I gotta say it's just the friendly vibe, the soul that underlies and oozes through these presentations that makes them classics. Thank you for keeping them up, and for responding occasionally. Keeps the spirit alive. Peace.
@@CookingwithShotgunRed Oh I am soooo sorry to hear that. I almost commented today: "I love this man. I want him to eat whatever he desires and live to be 110!" You can tell how much he truly loved you, even in his joking. Just the way he said your name--every time, with reverence. You seem like you must have been teenage sweethearts with a love that never faded.
I just read some replies and did not know Steve passed. I am sooo sad. God bless you and your family always. This is a good remembrance of Him forever!
I loved this video because of him! Went to comment that I will try this recipe only to find that he passed away. Awe. Such a loss to many. Sending love and warm hugs to his family and friends.
I started watching these about a month ago. Thank you Sheila. Steve really makes it easy to follow no weird ingredient. Just good stuff. I am going to make his fried chicken every recipe I looked seemed super hard. Everything he makes is great and easy to follow. I am not a natural cook. But onion rings I am making. One onion I think would be plenty. ❤️😊
I just watched your beer battered onion rings video And I have to admit those are the best looking onion rings I have ever seen anywhere. You do such a great job on everything you make but this was exceptional.
So sorry to hear of Steve’s passing, wish I had met him personally. He alway’s seemed like such a real fun loving kind of guy.Loved his video segments,he realy taught me a lot.Condolenses and well wishes to family and friends.RIP Steve we’ll miss you buddy.☹️🙏🏻
Hey Steve, as a Native New Yorker, I'm wasn't so big on onion rings. But I tried your recipe to the tee. I must say I'm truly addicted! Absolutely delicious! Thanks for sharing. Also like your homemade McDonald's fries! Keep on cooking!
Retired chef here, and I just have two things: first, condolences to Steve's family and friends. I'm sorry to hear of your loss. Now, for anyone who wants to make THE BEST onion rings I don't have much to add to this other than, use a SHARP KNIFE or MANDOLIN to slice the onions and store the onions in an OPEN container in the fridge overnight. If you are lucky enough to have an auxiliary fridge put them in there because onions smell like, well, onions! Keep them very cold overnight. When you are nearly ready to cook them PEEL the INNER MEMBRANE from EACH onion ring and brine! I used to use a highly seasoned buttermilk brine after removing all the membranes. You'll get a MUCH better, easier to bite through, onion ring, and it will help to keep the onion stuck in the batter, as well.
@@CookingwithShotgunRed Oh, good! I'm so glad he didn't pass without knowing what a good knife is! Again, I'm so sorry for your loss. I sincerely hope that his knives are being used by skillful hands every day and that they will last long enough to be passed on to a younger generation someday.
This is the BEST onion ring recipe ever! I made it for the hubby and now he request it all the time. I've told him for the sake of our health we can only have these a couple times a month otherwise he would want these every other day!
This man I can tell lived a full enjoyable life. Too short yes, but sweet I’m sure it was. RIP. You live on forever in your wonderful knowledge, wit, charm, humor, and chef skills here on TH-cam. Godspeed my friend.
I was so happy to finally find a recipe for Beer Batter Rings that I could follow and now see that letting the flour dry on the onion rings is key to getting them crispy however I was so sad to read that Shotgun Red died. I watched a video where he was making Rabbit Stew and said he loved it so much it would be what he requested as his last meal A day later he was gone. I hope he is cooking up a storm in Heaven and knows how many lives he touched with just his great personality and a cup of flour! RIP
Steve's presentation of his recipes was way better than most people. You seem to have an easy way about explaining each step which is a lot better than just about everybody else. I've copied a few of his recipes for my own personal use. The onion rings being one of them. I'm sorry to hear about Steve's passing . I'll keep you and your family in my prayers. Thank you for being patient with him while he was teaching the rest of us to cook a little better with each video.
I didnt realize he had passed. I'm so sorry. To me, he was to cooking what Bob Ross is to painting. I may not always try to throw together a recipe, but I do enjoy the calming effect of watching this very obviously kind hearted man doing what he loved. Earlier this year, he helped me get over my "fear" of working with dough by learning his recipe with flour and greek yogurt. And let me tell you... that crust was better than what I'm served when I order out for pizza by a long shot! Much love to the man, and to all of you for keeping his legacy moving forward.
I hear small snippets of Chris Farley in his voice, I like watching these vids, they make me happy. I'm so sorry for your loss, we'll all be together again someday...🙂
The guy's a true American. R.I.P. Just found this a few days ago & tried them tonight. Dee-licious! God bless him & Sheila. Thank you for sharing your knowledge & experience.
I just found his channel. I really enjoyed his beer batter onion rings. I was just reading some comments and found out he had passed. Sorry for your loss. I intend to watch all his videos. God bless.
@@CookingwithShotgunRed hi I loved it first time I made onion rings I tryed it with cod fish amazing may God continue to bless you and keep you and yours safe.
I just started watching some of your videos and really got into them because of Steve's personality. I'm not from TN and was born in 88' so I didn't know of his previous work until I looked him up, but man o man, I am sad to hear he passed away back in 2018. Seems like a real nice man.
@@epicepidemic7131 I found out about this guy a few weeks back. Watched one video of him making a pizza and I was hooked. Ended up checking out his website and its ridiculous! This guy was a celebrity and truly multi talented! Watch the documentary on his the website...it blew me away!
I just found your channel today and am sad to hear that Shotgun Red has passed. Thank you GrillMeister for your passion and sharing your skills. Steve's geniue enjoyment of cooking and enthusiasm for food really makes him so much fun to watch. Good work stealing his onion rings Miss Shelia! it convinced him to make this video!
I feel quite sure that this is the onion ring recipe that I have been looking for. I also feel very sorry for the loss of Steve, he was such a great, wonderful guy. He has however left a great legacy behind; I feel assured that many of us still follow his teachings. He was such a kind beautiful Man, very inspirational.
Aww perfect recipe ❤️ thanks Steve and Sheila, you two are always in our kitchen( well in our minds) the times my husband and I get to cook together...hey sheila ❤️❤️❤️ God bless your family!! And sorry for your loss 😞
Same recipe except hubby uses half cornstarch and half flour...super crispy and stay that way even when they get cold!! Great video..very informative!!
I just started following Shotgun Red a week ago, he died? Oh no terrible news! Sheila I’m making the onion rings right now in England, I followed the channel two minutes into the first video I saw, what a likeable, warm man.
Paper towel (on a rack) Red; it cuts down on softening the crispiness because it absorbs the grease and allows for air flow. I too have cooked for years and I must say it does work. Love your cooking channel and of course Shelia. Thank you for sharing your recipes.👨🍳🍗🍅🍖🥣☕✝
WOW, he is fabulous, I love Steve! I am subscribing to all I can of his and Shelia too. I read he has passed, I'm so sorry and sad for his family and his fans! May God Bless y'all! And the fans too! I just saw this one, and I'm fascinated by him. So fun and loveable to watch and listen to. I will be subscribing to all and anything he had to watch for later. But CAN'T wait to make these Onion rings for sure! I'm from NC and we love these and were into hush puppies too! Thanks for sharing these all with us. Again GodBless to his close friends and family. And I know his soulful self is up in heaven making everyone laugh while he cooks up his fine foods ! The world has lost 1 remarkable man who had ALOT of love and fun to offer us! I know he will be missed!😢

The recipes are first rate and the cooking fun, but I gotta say it's just the friendly vibe, the soul that underlies and oozes through these presentations that makes them classics.
Thank you for keeping them up, and for responding occasionally. Keeps the spirit alive.
Peace.
Glad you like them!
The man, the myth, the Legend! Rest in Paradise! ❤️
I love when he talks to Sheila. True kitchen love.
Thank you! Steve passed away Dec 29th 2018
@@CookingwithShotgunRed Oh I am soooo sorry to hear that. I almost commented today: "I love this man. I want him to eat whatever he desires and live to be 110!"
You can tell how much he truly loved you, even in his joking. Just the way he said your name--every time, with reverence. You seem like you must have been teenage sweethearts with a love that never faded.
We who are about to cook how you taught us, salute you! Eat well, rest well, while we take up the fight.
Those are beautiful, his voice is very soothing .. rest in paradise sir ....
Thanks!
I just read some replies and did not know Steve passed. I am sooo sad.
God bless you and your family always. This is a good remembrance of
Him forever!
Thank you! :)
I loved this video because of him! Went to comment that I will try this recipe only to find that he passed away. Awe. Such a loss to many. Sending love and warm hugs to his family and friends.
Thank you!
Glad you love this channel! Glad Steve can help with his easy way of explaining. shotgunred.com
I'm here for the little tips he's mentioning during the process. so informative. Thanks man!
I just watched your beer battered onion rings video And I have to admit those are the best looking onion rings I have ever seen anywhere. You do such a great job on everything you make but this was exceptional.
Wow, thanks! Thanks for watching this channel!😋👍
Thank you so much! :)
This is awesome. I was always looking for an onion rings vid. Rest in peace Steve.
Hey Steve, as a Native New Yorker, I'm wasn't so big on onion rings. But I tried your recipe to the tee. I must say I'm truly addicted! Absolutely delicious! Thanks for sharing. Also like your homemade McDonald's fries! Keep on cooking!
Thanks for a sweet comment! Your so welcome. Unfortunately Steve passed away Dec 2018😢💗
He bought some better knives. lol
The big fella is chilling upstairs with the boss man. And hopefully both are eating healthy and well
I didn't know Red had passed , what a guy Love to Reds family and friends , enjoyed him so much
Thank you! ❤️
Boy Do we ever miss Steve. He is the Julia Child for the common man. Thank goodness he and Shelia created so many wonderful recipes.
Thank you William! Your to kind!😋💗
This is the BEST onion ring recipe ever! I made it for the hubby and now he request it all the time. I've told him for the sake of our health we can only have these a couple times a month otherwise he would want these every other day!
Glad you love it! They are great! Thanks for being a subscriber!!!
TY! If I trust anyone's recipe on YT, it's you my friend! I'm making some onion petals , as an appetizer tonight.
Hope you enjoy
This man I can tell lived a full enjoyable life. Too short yes, but sweet I’m sure it was. RIP. You live on forever in your wonderful knowledge, wit, charm, humor, and chef skills here on TH-cam. Godspeed my friend.
Thank you! :)
Great tips for this recipe!
I enjoy these videos.
Healing wishes for you and your family, Miss Sheila. ❤️ He really is the myth and the legend.
Thank you so much Heather! :)
WONDERFUL!!! Thank you for continuing your & Steve’s awesome legacy, Sheila!!! God bless!!!
You are so welcome Barry! :)
RIP
Thanks for such a sweet comment!😀👍💗
This looks amazing I’m making it now!
I made these precisely as you instructed and...they were the best onion rings I have ever tasted or made. THANK YOU SHOTGUN RED!!
Looks delicious l sore going to try it
Steve's presentation of his recipes was way better than most people.
Yes they were Sean!! Thanks for watching his video’s. 😊👌
I love this man, so personable! I'm sad to hear of his passing 😢 This world can be so cruel....
Glad you liked it!😀🙂
I hear small snippets of Chris Farley in his voice, I like watching these vids, they make me happy. I'm so sorry for your loss, we'll all be together again someday...🙂
I've always said he seems like he'd be right at home with the Chicago Bear Super Fans on SNL.
The guy's a true American. R.I.P.
Just found this a few days ago & tried them tonight. Dee-licious!
God bless him & Sheila. Thank you for sharing your knowledge & experience.
Our pleasure!

I tried this outstanding recipe last night with one slight variation of garlic powder- DELICIOUS AND CRISPY!

Your so welcome! :)

What a nice guy. I was really sad when we lost Steve. His show was like a tonic of happiness for me. RIP. My brother.
Sweet comment!😀👍
I just started watching some of your videos and really got into them because of Steve's personality. I'm not from TN and was born in 88' so I didn't know of his previous work until I looked him up, but man o man, I am sad to hear he passed away back in 2018. Seems like a real nice man.
Thanks for your comment! :)
What did he do before?
I would look it up, but every comment helps this channel~!
@@epicepidemic7131 I found out about this guy a few weeks back. Watched one video of him making a pizza and I was hooked. Ended up checking out his website and its ridiculous! This guy was a celebrity and truly multi talented! Watch the documentary on his the website...it blew me away!
Have watched awarding winning chef's, but have learned more from Country Steve than any of them. The sticks idea is genius. Thanks.
Thanks John! shotgunred.com 👍😃
Great idea using the wooden stick Ha! Blessings from a former Minnesotan. (was born and raised in ST. Paul. Live in Montana, now.) :)
Thanks 👍
I just found your channel today and am sad to hear that Shotgun Red has passed.
Thank you GrillMeister for your passion and sharing your skills. We will honor your legacy by making delicious onion rings for years to come. (And Sheila, if you ever come to Canada, I’ll be happy to make extra to share with you).
Thank you for watching this channel! We appreciate you being here! Yes when I come back to Canada we will have to make some recipes. We have a recoup on here called pour Man Lobster it was filmed in Canada
@@CookingwithShotgunRed I’ll be sure to check it out!
He reminds me of my dad with his wholesome humor and personality. I am so sorry to hear that he’s passed away 😢
Thanks!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I love the stick idea! I’m going to make this recipe but will spray with oil and use convection oven rather than frying. Should be good too!
Steve's geniue enjoyment of cooking and enthusiasm for food really makes him so much fun to watch. Good work stealing his onion rings Miss Shelia! it convinced him to make this video!
Thanks so much James! He knew me well. I didn't want a whole bag. Just 1, 2 maybe 3 at the most! :)
Thank for the compliment of Steve. He would appreciate that!

Sheila reaching in to swipe one was priceless. 😆- Blessings
Thanks James! :)
Ranch dressing makes a good dip too!
Yes it does Steve!!! :)
Same recipe except hubby uses half cornstarch and half flour...super crispy and stay that way even when they get cold!! Great video..very informative!!
Thanks for watching! 👍😃
What a gem. Sorry he's gone.
what? He is gone? :( no
WOW, he is fabulous, I love Steve!
You are precious Katy! Thanks for such sweet words! He died from natural causes.
I love your approach, thanks for taking the time.
My pleasure!
