    What a sad history for this village but great to see this history remembered so well. It is a very pretty little village with such beautiful scenery.

      I think it's brilliant how the history is not hidden away, the buildings in the town all have a story and many of them are just there on signs for all to read. It has been done very tastefully.

    I had no idea that England was like this. It's been two weeks since I've been watching videos about other countries and I'm really surprised.Here in Brazil, I live in the interior of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, here in our city, people don't keep old houses. They dismantle and build 20-story skyscrapers.

    Dave, I think you are mistaken when you say, "...... The whole village quarantined itself from the rest of the UK to prevent further spread of the disease, and did so successfully, preventing the spread to surrounding areas". The disease is believed to have reached Eyam in a flea-infested bundle of clothes sent from London in 1665 to a resident of the village. In London, there were recorded plague deaths of around 70,000, but its estimated the true figure exceeded 100,000. Eyam might have taken sensible steps to isolate itself once the plague arrived in the village, but was already widespread in England from other sources long before Eyam took those measures.

    Thank you Dave. Just found your channel and just enjoyed a wonderful walk around Eyam. I must say, the 'No Talking' element is perfect; just natural sounds in beautiful natural surroundings. I can't always get away with it on my video's so many of them have music. I take more photo's than video, but I am considering buying a GoPro but I will have to find out what they do first. I wonder, is there a book , GoPro for Idiots (I will check that out on Amazon! Over a nice coffee, I am now going to check out your other walks. Cheers, Mike

    • @DavesWalks
      @DavesWalks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would have to strongly advise against GoPro, it brought me no end of trouble and strife! Unless you intend to be doing anything considered extreme sports or anything rough where the camera is going to get bumped and banged up, it is not best suited to what I was trying to use it for, high quality videography. Check out my videos from Castleton at night walk and onward where I use the Pocket 2, the quality difference is massive.

    Hol' on hol' on -so we have to assume Eyam was the only place in uk
    that got batch of infected clothing ????Surely other places must have
    recieved infected clothing aswell - and if they must have -why only
    Eyam badly affected???

    • @DavesWalks
      @DavesWalks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A good question and one that I can't find a good answer too.. I think it did spread out to many Cities, with some effected very bad! but Eyam gets acknowledgement more for how it responded to being badly affected - Full village quarantine. Whilst this quarantine spared other local communities close by, it came at a huge sacrifice, a very high death count, near 3 out of 4 dieing. Some stuff about it here as to why Eyam tends to get a special mention regarding the plague: www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/HistoryofEngland/The-Great-Plague/
      I think the usual (and most unhelpful) tactic when the black death came was run for the hills where as with Eyam, the village folk opted together to tough it out. Back to your question, and I am just speculating, in 1665 perhaps the clothing could have got infected during transit as it must of travelled by horse and cart where roads were mostly dirt track and assuming it wasn't really packaged much if at all, I don't know, or maybe the infected clothing did get to many places, that were then badly affected. Anyway, thanks for the question it led to much pondering :)
