A review of some of the quirks of the Moto Guzzi V85TT Travel

- Italian bikes are always full of 'character' and the V85TT is no different. Here are some rambling thoughts on a few things I've found out in the first several hundred miles of ownership of this 2020 Travel model. Filmed without any posh gear, so the sound could be better and it's a bit shakey in places.

They're great bikes. If you want the 'extras' they're worth it - otherwise the other models are basically the same. Don't forget the 2021 models are updated in various ways, so there may be bargains to be had on earlier bikes.
Loved this review. I'm dead set on getting the v85 Travel soon, but it's great to hear about the quirky bits as well to lessen any disillusionment when it get it. Thanks for the no-nonsense information! I'm looking forward to my "quirky" bike. :)

Nicely done. Honest reviews exist on YT but are relatively rare. Most serious, potential buyers or owners prefer frankness over spin with added drones, intros, music and over-editing. The 🐑 were also a welcome addition.

Great review! Good thing they added the sticker warning about spontaneous combustion in direct sunlight 😆. We get a bit of the liquid kind here in the Pacific Northwest as well.
I'd love to ride in the PNW one day. Went to Seattle many years ago on a work trip, but that's not quite the same!

Well depends what you're after. It's not a speed demon or an off road specialist, it's a good all rounder IMO. I didn't even test ride - I just took a chance and I've not been disappointed so far 👍
@@MultiVogon Good to hear. It looks very much like they are in short supply for 2021 here in North America, my dealer has not had any 2021’s yet. I may hold off for a 2022 and hope there are a few upgrades.

Great review. I've had my V85 since September 2019 and fully agree with your comments. I love this bike, quirks and all. My only slight negative is that it can run out of puff at higher speeds (80+mph) but its certainly not a show stopper. Cheers from Toulouse
I've heard others say similar. For me, in the real world it's got plenty of go (so far!). I'm impressed how well they go really, given the barn-door like aerodynamics!
@@MultiVogon I forgot to mention the excellent handling. I took a test ride at Wheels and Waves bike event in Biarritz a couple of years ago. I followed the Guzzi test ride, both of us on V85's on a very spirited ride in the hills around Biarritz... (lucky bastard... I know!!) I was really surprised how they can hustle. It's what made my mind up that I had to have one!

That was one of the most informative, down to earth, honest and easy to watch assessments on the V85tt I’ve seen.
Some of that quirky stuff I noticed even through rose tinted glasses on a test ride. Annoying quirks. But not enough to put me off as it appears it didn’t you. But seriously, daft things built in aren’t necessary for us to like it because « that’s Italian ».

Tyre pressure on a label on top of the batery cover under the seat..in Kg/cm3 equiv psi - front-36, back-42 ... Great vid (Y)

I do to. Problem is my closest Guzzi dealer is 2+ hours away and I would load the miles on it quick...
@@Thirty-OughtSick Yes it can be like that even in the little old UK. My first Guzzi came from a dealer 5hrs away, I bought this one from a dealer 4 hrs away, and got it serviced at my local place a mere 2hrs away. Sigh!

@@Thirty-OughtSick Oof! Somebody call the burns ward! 😂 It's around 80 miles to my 'local' dealer which I realise is less than an hour for some people. Not round here with narrow twisty roads, lots of holiday traffic, farmers, and goods vehicles though.
@@MultiVogon The country puts it into perspective, UK has miserable roads and are always full of traffic. Im in Kentucky in the United States, I can do 167 miles in 2.5 hours to get to my Guzzi dealer😂

I have seen the negative throttle cruise control cancel issue on the triumph tiger too.
Throughly enjoy all your videos and have learnt plenty from you. Of course I could rely on bike magazine the model they recently tested was chain driven!
Servicing , help, advice, back up and purchase.... after seeing and sitting on this bike at NEC pre covid i decided to would have one . Sadly my dealership experience in the black Country was absolutely soul crushing. My part ex was a undesirable piece of s%$t and they would really struggle too move it and wouldn't like it in there showroom. Obviously immaculate low mileage BMW bikes with full service history are not as desirable as I thought.
Maybe things happen for a reason just over a year later Arnold's motorcycles opened a guzzi dealership in burton on trent. Absolutely no problem with both my part exchange motorcycles, fantastic service and of course I now have a euro 5 model and those tubeless tyres along with tyre pressure monitoring system have already been 100% useful.
Give Arnold's a go I they certainly came up trumps for me.
Hi, glad to hear that the videos have been useful, and sorry to hear about your dealer experience. Seems all too common, unfortunately. I am at the point now where I think I'll take it to a dealer for the next service, then after that might do everything myself.. Glad to hear that you've got a decent dealer you can use!

Ha ha, I nearly bought a Lancia Fulvia back in the day. Ended up going British though, with a Triumph GT6. It didn't really have any buttons so was fairly idiot proof ;-)
I really enjoyed the quirkiness of my v7 carbon dark was a little weary of the brand because of a weird clutch cable problems I had with mine. But I really like the v85tt, having said that I think I'll wait for their new adventure coming out this year or next. If the new v100 is any indication of what's in store for the future and the new adventure bike is going to be using the same engine it should be an awesome bike I can't wait.
The V100 seems to be getting good reviews so far. I'm sure they'll use that engine for more styles of bike. I remember there were a few people reporting clutch issues when I had my V7 Milano - mostly down to adjustment as I recall. Luckily I had no issues with mine.

Great review, simple,precise, no needless woohooing, look forward to seeing the next one. Does yours have the smaller panniers? I think on the travel model. Not a lover of the huge aluminium ones.
Yeah not sure what they're called ('street' maybe?) but its the standard panniers that come with the travel model. I actually cut out a load of waffling about the foibles of the pannier fitment - might make that into a separate short video ;-)
Go for it, I'd like to see what size they are and if a thermos will fit inside, upright of course, with an ensemble of egg sandwiches, mini pork pies and a small jar of pickle.

No got a brand new 2020 model which looks identical to yours. I think the dealer got 3 of them cheap from Europe somewhere. Keep up the good work. @@MultiVogon

Thanks for the good info. I am trading a recently purchased 2020V7III Stone S in for a 21 V85TT. Sorry it is not a travel addition but no availability right now. How do you like your tires? It appears the base V85 that I will get has more road oriented tires. I prefer a 50/50 type. I too found the V7 a bit small for long rides and am looking forward to a bike more capable for more situations. cheers
Yeah I loved the way the V7 rode... but not the way it killed my back! I think the original 'normal' V85's had something like Metzeler Tourance Next tyres - I absolutely would be happy with those (& know people who have done 000's of miles on them with no issues). Having said that I've had no issues so far either with the Anakee Adventures that are fitted to the travel. If they last as long as some say they do - I'd fit them again. Not ridden through a winter on them yet though, so we'll have to see how that goes as well. They are a little noisy on smooth tarmac to be fair - but I usually wear earplugs so don't notice it.
Rule #1- one doesn't stand on the pegs while cruise control is engaged.
Rule #2- it is an Italian bike...quirks are expected.
Rule #3- the display is probably the same as KTM.
Rule #4- MG is the Italian version of a Harley. Gear indicator disappears when the clutch is engaged. It is annoying.
Rule #5- adventure bikes not supposed to be ridden on the balls of the feet.
Rule #6- buffering disappears if you remove the windscreen.

Refreshingly honest. I was wondering if the tubed tires are an issue. I could get a 2020 now or wait a bit for the tubeless 2021s. I think I'll wait.

If you wait for the 2021 you get tubeless tires, BUT also have to deal with the EURO5 restrictions.
Did you ever remove the sticker on the windshield? First thing I did was remove all the consumer stickers.

How have you got on when overtaking? Does it have enough grunt to overtake safely?
I mean, it's no sportsbike, but it is fine for me. You do have to plan ahead if it's more than one car I'd say - doesn't have the instant grunt of a bigger engined bike for sure.
How comfortable do you find the bike to be on long rides (+3-4 hours)?
Really good - much better than I was expecting. I mean it's going to depend how short/tall/fat/thin you are etc etc, but for me it's pretty good. My longest day ride so far was 450 miles th-cam.com/video/Yc07s-hartg/w-d-xo.html (I miscalculated so this vid says "only" 430 ;-)
How do you find the engine heat? I live in S Spain so it's a bit of a concern
I bought the 2021 version of the V85TT Travel. Quirks you mentioned.. still there. One question though.. at some points the bike feels like it loses power. It's not something that happens often, but it happens just for an instance. Also in heavy traffic where I was jammed, I noticed that when the bike moves in extremely slow speeds due to heavy traffic and I "play" a bit with the gear clutch and the right grip with second gear on just to prevent a complete halt, after I release the clutch and turn the grip to gain speed, for a while power is not distributed properly. It feels like there are fluctuations in power even when steadily turning the grip for more power. Did that ever happen to you? Please make more videos! Nicely done with this one! Keep it simple as you do!
Probably a characteristic of an air-cooled engine. When they get hot they can chatter and not run properly. The OBC has a hard time compensating for that. The Guzzi needs an oil cooler and possibly more oil capacity. The old-timers fitted a sump extension and that helped a lot. However, because of the ground clearance issue, I don't think that is feasible.
Hi, the only time mine doesn't run well is on first start from a cold engine. Ticks over fine but can be a little like you describe for the first few minutes if you don't let it warm up before setting off. Probably one for the dealer to check out? Maybe a sensor somewhere is giving bad info to the computer? Then again 2021 bikes are Euro-5 so they probably made a lot of changes to fuelling etc.

It's a great bike - is it great for you? Only you can decide! I have no regrets so far after a year. Some people say they are underpowered - personally I don't think so. I have found it to be both great around town and on longer trips. It is not a sports bike and it is not a BMW GS - both bonus features for me ;-) Cheers.

Never ridden two up but the seat looks comfy for two. Weight is not noticeable when riding, and not too bad to move around by hand either. I'm a similar age and have no issues with it 👍

Question: for all enthusiast. Describe buffeting. I have been riding 40+ years, primarily sport bikes and to me buffeting is sticking your head above the windscreen at speeds approaching and above 240 kph, no matter what make of helmet.
My issue is wind noise at 80kph and above. I own a 2022 v85tt adventure of which I installed a lowering rear shock/non factory/ and oem lower seat-(I am 5'6" with a 32" inseam).
If I lower my head 2" it quiets down, regardless of helmet make/model.
In my situation would the taller oem windscreen solve this issue?
If it did, I have reached bike perfection for me.
Your wind screen mod looks to hideous for/to me.

Hi thanks for the comment. The screen issue is a divisive one on this bike. Half the owners have no issue and don't understand what all the fuss is about. The other half (myself included) find it a real problem. No other bike I've ever owned or ridden has had the same issue.
Sadly the only way to find out what will solve your problem is to try various things I suspect. What works for one person might not work for another. Maybe you can test ride a bike with a big screen to see how it works perhaps?
Oh, and I completely agree - that spoiler on the windscreen is hideous, but I've kind of got used to it now...!!

May I ask... How much mileage do you usually do with a full tank? The Stelvio is thirsty!!

As always, 'it depends'... I pretty much fill up at around 250 miles, though with reasonable care it should see 300 on a tank. But I don't ride everywhere on the redline at three-figure speeds... I imagine that wouldn't do much for the economy! Luckily I got that out of my system years ago ;-)
The trip computer typically indicates low 60's average MPG on any out of town type trip. Given the thing has the aerodynamics of a barn door, I'm pretty happy with that.

Great review, great bike. Convert the existing rims to tubeless, I did my bonneville 5000mls ago, costs bugger all other then your time and means you can do roadside repairs plus when you have a puncture it’s a slower release of tyre pressure. It also seems to improve ride quality.
My rims/oem spokes have tubeless tires/2022v85tt adventure.
There had better not be a tube in there.

I've got the same motorcycle and i have to say that the dowload manual is much more extensive than the factory one.
By the way my favourite line in the manual is "this vehicle is extremely powerful and must be used carefully, prudently and with respect towards its potential capabilities"
I quite like: "PASSENGERS MUST BE SUITABLY INSTRUCTED ON HOW TO BEHAVE TO PREVENT DANGEROUS SITUATIONS WHEN RIDING."
@@MultiVogon That's just brilliant. I wish I'd had the presence of mind to instruct my girlfriend of the time (late 1970s, Yam RD200DX) - that it is a really Bad idea to reach round with both hands and clamp them onto the front of my visor, just before a fairly sharp bend in the road

The sun coming in from behind the wind screen, means the sun would be hitting the instrument paneling to the degree of harm. They say that definitely will harm the display
Yeah, people used to laugh at my Ducati because I had a little 'screen cozy' to keep the water out of the instruments when parking in the rain. Now I'm going to have to make a sun shade for the Guzzi!.. Sigh! ;-)

What no shots of the animals?
I have the same spoiler on the windshield on both of my bikes . There are 2 sizes . The larger one makes a big difference for wind buffeting . And no bugs on my helmet. Wish i tried them years ago . Would have saved a lot of $$$ trying to find a good windshield. Since I trade bikes frequently.

Yeah, dealer support is quite poor here in the UK, sadly. I don't like the look of those spoilers, but they do seem to work.

The headlight switch is set and forget, lights on end of story
Interestingly I've been reading the manual for a BMW r1250RT recently, and that says that the DRLs are designed to be MORE visible than the headlight in the daytime. I think the Triumph Tiger 900 manual said something similar (I'll have to check). I don't recall any mention of this in the Guzzi manual though.
I'd never really thought about why they introduced DRLs on vehicles (here in Europe at least) instead of just making the headlights come on full time. I guess the clue was in the name!

Yeah the audio isn't great sorry. I've since got a microphone which helps a bit, but you can't get away from the fact I shoot these vids on a crappy phone - really need to get a fancy you-tuber rig or something. But then again, I'm not a fancy you-tuber... ;-)
It makes you wonder why you bought this motorcycle or still have it if there are so many issues... Yes small issues but they are a lot which make collectively a big one. But maybe you didn't know, so thanks. The fact with a sun is hilarious.
I bought this motorcycle because I thought it would be a good bike for me. After a few thousand miles, it IS a good bike for me, and I like it very much. That's not to say it is perfect, no bike is perfect IME. None of the issues I've had so far have come close to making me regret buying it 😎

I know, I've seen what's needed to change the clutch on a BMW boxer, and these are basically the same layout! Luckily parts from Piaggio are cheap and readily available here (sarcasm!!)
Although you might be right in some of your comments, it's very interesting how a British point of view wants to understand the philosophy and the culture of an Italian motorcycle. It's just doesn't fit for me
Just my opinions, 4000 miles in and I still love the bike. I also still curse the weird button layout too ;-)

In fact it is not a Gassi it is a Moto Guzzi. It is not difficult to pronounce this name correct. So come on a little bit more effort as respect to this nice bike.
