    I bought a 6 pack of these when they came out but they didn't excite me. They were expensive too. They didnt seem to catch on.

      When they first came out I really loved the look of them and really wanted to use them but like you say they were so expensive.
      But I had always thought they were a Lightfast version of other alcohol based markers. So when I got this set and started testing them on all the various papers and then had to buy this Yupo paper I was less and less enamoured with them.
      But I can totally see why Winsor and. Newton have stopped them, I think they are aimed at a particular artist and I think W&N have done a pretty bad job marketing them at that particular artist. I would hazard a guess that if I ran a pol asking everyone who purchased these markers, when they used them, did they expect them to perform as they did, or did you think they were something different; I think at least 95% would say they expected them to be like traditional markers. I do think if W&N put a little bit more thought into the product and made them a slightly more universal product they could salvage what is other wise an excellent concept product. I think only using them on one type of surface is incredibly limiting to them as well.

    The Pitt Pens have a white marker, and it's awesome, I use it on all my art pieces. Seeing the laydown of this white, it seems like it's similar. Thx for the info, will try the 6 pack I have on yupo paper.

      Oh I wasn’t aware that the Pitt pens had a white pen, and the excellent thing about the Pitt Pen white would be that gorgeous fine brush nib they have. Thanks for the comment really appreciate it.

    I would like to see how the markers look and blend on the paper that Windsor Newton designed for them. Do they streak as much.

    Harry the reason that Copic don't have a white marker but these do is because Copic uses a dye based ink, whilst these deliver actual pigment (they're a bit like a liquid coloured pencil). Dyes are permanent (once dry) but not lightfast and they are transparent. Pigments are not permanent (unless they are fixed) but they are lightfast & most (not all) pigments are opaque. You need opacity for a white to work & so Copic is unlikely to come out with a white marker unless they find a way to make the dye opaque. Thanks for the review, I've had my eye on these markers a while, but all I can find are negative reviews. However after seeing your review, I think I will give them a go. I think they could be useful for underpainting.

    I agree, this are hard to use, but once you get how to do it, (and if it match your style) those are wonderful. The paper that you use is the most important factor!!!

    Once again, thank you for your honest opinion and practical example of how this product works. Great that they are lightfast. Interesting they are not really markers - they appear to belong in a category all on their own. I think I'd like to try them if they are ever affordable. Thank you for this review, Harry. I wish you and your family the happiest Christmas and 2021. xoxo

    You hit the nail on the head with these markers - no wonder they stopped carrying them and are now on sale. I bought a 24 pc of them a while back and I’ve been so frustrated with them! I was using them like copics but they were so weird to work with.
    I’ve also had a lot of difficulty with paper as well - I’ve used yupo (never dried), marker paper (somehow soaked through and tore the paper apart, I’ve used this paper with copics before and never had a problem), Bristol, you name it. I’ve also had a problem with a structure of the markers (the bullet nib going inside, falling out).
    I agree with you that they should have been advertised for more looser free type of artists. I now have started to like them more after using them because I understood what kind of markers these are intended for (probably for sketching).
    I could never layer correctly with these, working them with copics was a night mare for me as well.

    Great review Harry. I'm so sorry things aren't going well. Love the pigments but it seems to waste alot of it when blending. Kinda weird. I hope for you and your family a very Happy Christmas. And a better coming year than what we've all had to endure with the present one. 🎄❄❣❄🎄

    I’ve heard a lot of complaints about the structure of these markers. And that they don’t sell replacement nibs. What a shame they seem like wonderful formula as far as the Inc. is concerned

      Yes indeed the nibs lose definition about a week of moderate use, stay clear of these.

    Sorry to hear your daughter is still having issues , its hard as parents to know how best to resolve these sort of things when u just want to make it all ok for them again.
    My friends use these markers and make gorgeous vivid and large works, fairly detailed using just these markers. They are too expensive for me to try but they seem to last incredibly long for my friend so I guess they are worth their money given that they are lightfast . A give-away of these would b awesome.
    Best wishes for a wonderful Christmas to you and your family and thanks for your great content, it is appreciated.

      You are so right I have forgot to add the link, I have added here for you and I am so sorry, all you have to do is add a comment to the video the link takes you to. It can be any comment, a date or anything like that, it’s just I use software to randomly select the names and there just needs to be a comment to show your screen name.
      I wish you all the luck in the world, I’ll be announcing the winner around 3rd or 5th of Jan and there will be six people in total winning a gift. There is a 36 set of Winsor and Newton Pigment Markers and five 24 sets of Castle Arts Colored Pencils, excellent pencils. The 36 Derwent ProColour winner was announced on the 15th of December so that gift has gone.
      I try to give something back to The Art Gear Guide subscribers and viewers as often as I can but I especially try to do something just before Christmas and just after Christmas.

    You have to store them vertically, I didn’t know that when I first bought them and my blue marker turned brown.
    The Yupo paper is the best for this paper Jackson have a thicker Yupo paper, I used the WN pigment paper with these pens and it was similar to normal marker paper. The Yupo paper allowed me more time to add details when the ink had dried.
    These markers are good for very artistic expressionist style illustration. The pens allow you to make palette knife style illustration on the Yupo paper.
    The best part of these markers for me was the white marker because it a opaque marker. You can create interesting gradients white the white marker and blender. I could even use the white marker with other brands of alcohol markers.
    I don’t really use these pen anymore although I managed to have loose fun with them.
    I did repurchase the white marker because I got interesting effects using them with the brush markers.

      Thank you so much for the comment I really appreciate it I didn’t realise the Jacksons had thicker you poo paper I will definitely have to search dad up and buy some sheets. I think the markers are really limited And because of this I think only a small group of artists will be able to get the most from them. I think this must be the reason why Windsor and Newton have stopped making these markers. Thank you so much for the tips and ideas I really appreciate it.

      I know what you mean, the colors on the paper look beautiful as you lay them down, but it is the drying and settling that is the problem. It’s such a shame actually because they are really nice markers to hold in the hand.

    You really have to use the special paper specifically made for these markers. You didn't mention that these are lightfast also. One reason for the higher price point. I loved the way I was able to render an illustration as if I was using oil paint. They dry really fast but can reactivate too. If you're into painting and love that technique you will love these pigment markers.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you scroll to 7 min into the video I talk in detail about them being lightfast and that they are lightfast for 100 plus years. On my written review I also mention that Winsor And Newton don’t have an individual rating for each pen like pencils do and how I think a lot of people would like to know what the scale was to test them.
      They did seem very painterly to me as well as you rightly mention. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the markers I am really interested to learn how other artists have taken to them because as I mentioned in the review, I have seen some absolutely beautiful work done with them.

      @@TheArtGearGuide my apologies I had my nephew over and I didn't hear your explanation, I stand corrected. I really enjoy your thorough reviews generally. I value your opinion prior to making some supply purchases. I guess I'm a bit upset that these markers didn't "blow up" when properly used they truly are an amazing product! Anyways greetings from Seattle Washington State.

  • @sueallen952

    That paper is too slick for those markers, you need a good quality smooth paper, the yupo is plastic coated and the markers just slide off

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Which paper do you think would be better? I’ve Tried Bristol Smooth and Bristol Plate, I also tried the Xpress-it Blending card but it reacted much the same as the Yupo.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can’t help but think there must be a better surface out there for these markers, but whatever that paper is, I still think that making an art product that will only perform on o e type of paper is incredibly limiting.
      With Colored Pencils we can use all manner of paper, Acrylics can be used on lots of different surfaces and watercolours depending on the level of washes etc can be used on different grades of Watercolor paper, mixed media paper.
