I have owned a Randall 15 Airman that I ground the top guard down on, and I can confirm a) that it does improve the utility of the knife considerably, and b) also does incur the wrath of lots of knife "snobs" in general ( I don't like using that term, so please take it with a grain of salt - I just can't come up with a better, gentler term at the moment ! ) and the Randallites especially :) I must confess that while I don't regret doing it, I probably wouldn't do it on multiple high-enders ! It also caused me to buy another 15 to keep in stock condition when I had the chance !
For kitchen knives, you cannot beat the Victorinox line, with the Fibrox handle. Excellent knives, affordable, and used for decades in restaurants I've worked in. Victorinox manufactured under the Forschner name, and then as Victorinox itself.
Perfect Gift: Didnt know you needed it/wouldn't buy it for yourself but something they didnt ask for, nicer than average, use it often after receiving.
I have a Randall Mod 14 made in the late 70s' , but it is larger than the one shown in this video. Pretty much mint condition, with nickel silver guard .I even have the Randall cloth patch which is very rare .
Hey DCA, you’re often asked about a one “do it all” knife. But what about the opposite? What’s the most ridiculously specialized knife? I can imagine whatever it is, it has interesting blade shapes and materials. Would be awesome to see some of these hyper-specific tools (still knives tho!). Thanks and merry X.
I can vouch for the Mercer set as a great Christmas gift. I gave my parents the Mercer Genesis 6 pc set in the same glass block a few years ago. They love it. The rubberized handles are fantastic, and the blades hold a pretty good edge. I sharpen them each time I visit, and they tune up fast. They're probably the best kitchen set you'll find around $200.
Entertaining show mate. Glad to see you chose "my" RJM matey. Great mind think alike.! Merry Christmas & safe New Year to DCA, Thomas & Seth & all at Knife Center. Stay safe & stay sharp from Australia.
I reviewed the Shirogorov/RJM Soft Overkill and loved it, but I’ve been very fortunate to have reviewed many Shirogorovs on my TH-cam, and my absolute, hands down favourite so far was F3 Terus I reviewed last week. Unfortunately, I can’t actually afford to own any of them, but if I could…
Gentlemen: My EDC knife is a CRKT- LCK. I love it. It’s easy to open and just the right size. I notice 90% of my knife work is opening boxes at work or slicing cheese and apples when hiking. Do you have a suggestion for something more “slicey” that has a similar profile. One handed opening and a steel that is easy to sharpen are a must. Thanks.
Party knife has to be the Swiss Army knife! Bottle opener, cork scu knife and can opener for when you are dated to eat cat food . Been ther done alllll that! 😂
I bought a magnetic strip and then started filling it with the inexpensive Mundial kitchen knives with the white plastic handles. Best decision I ever made.
Hey DCA & Thomas. Disagree that a serrated bread knife is a must have. I have yet to find a bread that was either too crusty or too soft that I couldn't get a cleaner cut with my gyuto. I issue the first ever KniFAQ challange: show a bread cut that doesn't work with a thin chef's knife, but then works with a serrated bread knife.
this reminds me, I'm going to give my friend a roxon bbq multitool, because it's a multitool with a knife, it's only $30, and the design is just intrinsically funny, no one can frown on this thing.😂
I have a Randall Model 14 and I use it. You can beat on it hard and it can take it. The knife is designed to be used hard and as an indescribable knife that can be used in the harshest environments.
Hey DCA, Thomas, and everyone else around. What is on a DCA´s Wishlish but a differend take? What would you like to see next year from knife companies and how would you like this whole rabbit hole to evolve more? Any new materials? More budget brands, some new inovations perhaps? Cheap CRK or a 500 bucks Civivi design? Iam curious to know. Greeting from Czech Republic aaand have a nice holidays :)
I’ve had many opportunities to buy good used Randall knives in past years but I rarely see them for sale any more. I’d love to get a model 1 fighting knife at a decent price.
I already relate to DCA, and its a big part of why i enjoy KC videos, but i was in thrall when he talked about receiving a Randall-made and then mod-ding it! Hell yeah! Thats what i'm talking about: making it your own and doing what you want with your property! Brass and maroon are such a great combo! I think that a true user Randall-made or any otherwise safe queen is more a treasure and more complelling!!!! Great knife-talk!

What is the smallest EDC knife for large hands? My father-in-law has larger hands than average. And loves his old, worn, non-locking blade while working on the farm. What would be a nice modern replacement? Rust-resistant steel would be an advantage. Price somewhere around 75. But more if it's worth the money.
Hey DCA! I recently bought myself a kizer varatas and my friend really liked the milling pattern on the scales. I'm thinking of getting them a DOCK october, but do you have any other recs with cool milling patterns? Could be any metal, budget up to 200. Thanks!
Did you know that Randall is the only knife that buying just one makes you the owner of a Randall collection? I've owned 4, and I gave one to an uncle who used it in self defense and dropped the mugger with one stab. The police whiped the blood off the blade and gave it back to my uncle after they got to the crime scene.
Hey DCA, I generally carry a Large Sebenza 21 but I end up working in crawlspaces fairly often and my sebenza gets so dirty I need to take it apart and clean it. Looking for a slicey but still strong work knife, around the $200-300 range. For reference, I hate replaceable blade utility knives.
Recently I saw a knife with PSB27 witch is a spray formed D2. What's the deal with spray formed steels? How does it compare to particle metallurgy and ingot steels?
Hey DCA, I’ve been modding certain folding knives for people this year. Not to sell you anything but if you could have a big name company knife and model for instance a Case Sodbuster JR, what mods or improvements do you think would vastly improve the knife?
I generally dislike knife sets, but I agree with DCA's last 2 choices here. Mercer makes great serviceable knives; their knife roll / student kits are amazing values. I actually like their M20000 Genesis 6-piece set a little better, because the 5" utility knife it comes with is more useful than the serrated one in the ZuM set, and the handles are more standard shapes -- plus it often goes on sale in the $140-150 range. That Henckels set served me well for years and is a great deal at $200. However, I wouldn't buy that Chicago Cutlery set as anything but disposable; you'd be much better off spending that whole amount on a half-decent 8" chef's knife.
I'm guessin that would be "wav records" as in audio things. 3 knives I've always wanted and one of them is impossible to get on the primary market now: A Randall Model 18, A Randal Model 14 and a Chris Reeves Shadow - probably the IV. Sly Stallone was rockein that Lile Knife when I was a 13 year old Army cadet and the hollow handle surivival knife stuck right in my mind. As far as I know the Randall Model 18 was essentially the first one, and the Chris Reeves one pieces struck me as being the strongest if you're gonna go down that path. I'm less attached to the idea of hollow handled knives now, but those two knives are still in the heart of the 13 year old that is still inside me.
If you want any of the knives featured in this video check out the links below unless you want the RMJ/Shiro Overkill. Been checking the website almost hourly since the RMJ/Shiro was shown on the last new knives of the week just to keep seeing "unavailable" on the site. Can't tell me the Overkill sold out that fast but yet theres been a RMJ Q36 on the site for more than a month. Idk why but I love the look of this Overkill with the blue linen micarta inlays. Looks sexy AF and I would absolutely love to add it to my collection. Would certainly be my most expensive knife purchase but Imo it would be damn well worth it.

Hey DCA, since you are exploring the utility knife genre, is there any such thing as a utility knife blade made of premium steel? If not, what are the steel preferences? Thanks.
G'day, DCA. Resently purchased a Spyderco Tenatious. Noticed this unusual little mark on the back side of the blade. Does this have a specific meaning? See also different marks on other Spyderco blades. Greetings David New Zealand.
Spyderco grinds a small notch behind the thumb hole on the right side of the blade on their factory seconds. They are serviceable knives but there is something they found that does not justify selling it at full price.

Hey DCA, my wife is into astrology - are there any astrology/space/universe knives you would recommend that would fit under this theme? (I'm open to suggestions across different budgets).
I very much agree that it's always better to use expensive knives. If you want to anthropomorphize them like The Brave Little Toaster, your knives are sad, being locked up in a glass prison with folks occasionally walking by to gawk at them like they're sideshow freaks. It happens in a lot of other sectors though. Musical instruments got it BAD, with the obsession of 1950's electric guitars and the like. Sneakerheads often have rooms or closets devoted to their collection. Vintage toys, designer purses, watches... I'd dismiss "art knives" from the list though. In general, they're not designed to be practical and used, so I suppose it's alright for them to be show ponies if you're into 'em. The closest I'll probably ever have to a Randall is the Cold Steel R1 Military Classic. I won it from a sales competition back in the early 2000's. Just like a gift, I happily used it, but would be very self conscious if I put the money up for it myself. $250 was a LOT of money in 2002 for a guy making just a smidge above minimum wage part time. I haven't had much experience with Mercer, but heard they're good. I'd probably go with the Henckels set because I'm familiar with their warranty. I wish they'd grind their bolsters off the heel, and they do with some newer models, but the 4-stars were designed in the mid 70's and they're big on tradition.
I have 3 Randall's, looking to maybe sell 2 of them. A model 1, and model 16 special #1fighter with green micarta border patrol handle. We shall see. lol
Now here’s something controversial. I’ve lived and worked outdoors all my life. I’ve travelled for most of it. I’m a climber/ traveller and I’ve spent many nights and extended periods in the wilds. Desert, jungle, mountain and woodland environments. I have carried a knife everyday for the last 40 years. I have never batoned a piece of wood and I have never struck a ferro rod with a knife blade. I have never chopped down a tree or through a branch with a knife and moreover I have never needed to do any of these things. Shavings will start a fire, fire will dry your wood. Fire will burn through larger pieces if you cant snap them or you could pick smaller bits and just about any other tool will strike a ferro rod not least the striker they come with. Save your knife, save your energy. Every calorie counts.
DCA, I'd like your help. I want a new knife to carry on hikes and jogs. Used as self defense against 2 or 4 leggers. Priorities are weight and corrosion resistance. 3.5-3.75" blade. I carry PM2's right now. I'd like a bit more reach, a blade that isn't as "tall" and nothing heavier.
I hate when kitchen knife sets say "__ piece set" but they're including the block as a "piece." I know its "technically correct," but it's some bullshit. It also means that DCA's math on price per knife is skewed. The Mercer set has *five* knives, the Henckel set has *seven* tools (five knives and the hone & scissors)
As to a rescue device "clipped" to the visor, have you ever thought that maybe that device is actually attached to (and under) a Velcro strap that is wrapped around the visor, trapping said device (again, clipped to the strap) between the strap and visor? Who said anything about clipping anything directly to a visor? I suppose if the impact of the crash causes the visor to launch through the windshield, taking your tool with it, you're screwed. Then again, that type of impact might render you as well as every rescue tool inside the vehicle useless until the fire dept comes along with the jaws of life.
Have a RANDALL #1 that i used for 20yrs in the Army Infantry and its still going strong. Go for it.
I have an old catalogue explaining the manufacturing process of Randall knives. If I didn't have a dad budget I'd get one myself

DCA, did Artisan Cutlery or CRJB ever put out the bladed version of the kenetic tool? Does anyone know?
DCA, I'd like your help. I want a new knife to carry on hikes and jogs. Used as self defense against 2 or 4 leggers. Priorities are weight and corrosion resistance. 3.5-3.75" blade. I carry PM2's right now. I'd like a bit more reach, a blade that isn't as "tall" and nothing heavier.
920$ almost fell of the couch 😂
Way to put the fear of DCA Machete Santa into any kids watching
The intro proves to me someone who edits these videos is a fan of Monty Python
Okay and the "I came here for an argument" proves it even more
I hate when kitchen knife sets say "__ piece set" but they're including the block as a "piece." I know its "technically correct," but it's some bullshit.
It also means that DCA's math on price per knife is skewed. The Mercer set has *five* knives, the Henckel set has *seven* tools (five knives and the hone & scissors)
The math still holds up. Blocks or magnets aren't free -DCA
Santa carries scissors.
All those mishaps need tape.
And duct tape won't cut it (pun).
Your confrontational segment was very Monty python-ish
Big surprise on the MSQ answer... NOT 😂 all I could think - when is it coming. 😅
15:03 NUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!
Not a fan of metal knife blocks. The noises the knives make coming in and out. Magnet with cling wrap over it is easy and always stays clean.
I've seen knifes and parties at viking movies.
They throw them at the waitress 😅
If your "true love" gave you a knife for "The 12 Days of Christmas," which ones would make the KC list?
You guys don’t have any high end chef knife sets to show?
Benchmade bugout....... 👌
The guy asked for budget suggestions so I didn't think any of our Miyabi Black Series sets fit the bill ;) -DCA
It has to be ALL large fixed blades, right?!? 😂😂😂
Best kitchen knives?
$1545 for that Chuck Gedraitis. Nope, it’s not that cool.
Does anyone make a flipper with 2 blades?
Smaller serrated knife = tomato knife.
Rather than buy me a knife I ask people to buy me something cheaper. Some whiskey.
Hey DCA show me the weridest knife blade you have in store. The weirder the better
Oooh Dasher and Dancer nooooooo….
No reindeer were harmed in the making of this video :D -DCA
No! No! No more balisongs, Please!
Knives and Parties totally go well together.
Go listen to "Knife Party", they're killer.
How come almighty DCA got a wish list?
