I would have made a call to the warranty department before I decided to mess with that cage. Jet would have just sent out a replacement motor. Thanks for a great in depth video. Very good quality.
I've had that unit for years and I love it! Never had problems and used it in my cabinet shop and it works great. Yes you can get off brand filters, but not the bag inside. It's made to be used in CONJUNCTION with a dust collection system, no in place of it.
Yes definitely in conjunction with dust collection at the source. These are great when your shop is attached to your home, in your basement etc. to get what the saw/sander/dust collector misses. The relatively coarse “dust” you noted in the after test would easily be separated by a shop vac when it is generated. This polishes off the fine particles. Your repair was excellent. Another simple way to identify run-out is to hold a marker by the cage as it rotates and slowly move it toward the rim till it just touches. This will mark the high spots to help you make sure your bending at the proper location.
I’ve had one of these for over 15 years. Yes, the squirrel cage vibrates some, but hasn’t caused any problem. Also, hang it lower, from chains. It’ll pick up more dust and be easier to clean. I used the same chains you have and it’s been hanging there for fifteen + years without any problem. Do hook the chains to some eye bolts in the holes you drilled in the joists, and bend the s hooks closed.
Hang it lower is the Key, and it is not made to collect all the dust from your sander, saw or what ever, use the a shop vac. on the out put of the sander, or a dust collector
I literally just bought one of these units which will be delivered in about a week. I am so glad I came up with your video. Now I know what to look for and how to fix it when the unit shows up before installing it. Great job!
I enjoy all you do. I do HVAC. See if you can get a new blower wheel anyway. Next, get all thread rods and lower your unit back down closer to your dust makers. Next, see if the pre-filter size you have is ease to get where you live. If not, what size filter do they normally stock that is larger and get someone that can make sheet metal ducts to make you a transition from unit opening to also hold your new filter size. The closer your unit is to your dust makers, the more it will catch. Bigger pre-filter will not hurt that unit at all. Bigger filters surface will never hurt any HVAC system.
Just got a used one for 80 bucks. I noticed the wobble and the vibration. Thanks for the review and your fix. In my case it’s worth it for the price but yeah. 500+ and all them issues. I see why people make their own.
Made my own shop filter with and old 2' sq. box fan and two 1" thk filters. Works great at a fraction of the cost of that fancy Jet filter. Good video, thumbs up.
I was looking to see if anyone chimed in with that lol.cheapo box fans and hepa filter duct taped on it does an excellent job of cutting down the dust. I just vacuum them off every now and then.
Thanks for being thorough in your evaluation of the unit and problems you encountered, including the recommendation to test one out in person if possible.
I was lucky to find a nearly new unit at a local auction. It has made a world of difference in my shop. I hung mine by some heavier chain that I trusted a bit more. Maybe the previous owner fixed any issues, but I never had any issues. Thank you for the in depth review. I think many will find it helpful.
I don’t know how I missed this review when you did it! But glad to see it now! I am looking into probably 2 WEN units. I purchased a Grizzly table saw and had many “sloppy or lazy” issues from the manufacturer in Taiwan also. Thank you for giving your honest review!
Thanks for the video. Probably saved me a huge headache because I don't think I could have lived with knowing it was so poorly either put together or shipped. I think I will take the hour drive and get mine directly from the store where I can inspect it before taking it home. Thanks again!
It is very annoying when you spend hard earned money and end up having to put it right. I had the same problem with a bandsaw I bought with the blade guides. Like you thought It would be quicker to fix it myself as chances are a replacement parts/machine could still have the same problem. So congratulations on fixing the problem, it runs spot on now. I have same sort of machine although different brand and like your machine I don't think it collects all the dust in the workshop, but anything that does collect a good amount is a bonus and better than going into your lungs!. Enjoy your machine its a big asset to your shop.

after watching your video i went to Amazon and purchased the wen 3410. my work shop is very small and this machine should do the job. good video as usual from you. thank you.
I made a floor standing system from a whole house fan 42” 1/2 hp. I made a wood box with 4-20”x2” filters on casters. I use it behind my grinders, wire wheels, buffer and bench for sanding, it pull the dust away from me at a high rate. I use a jet for ambient dust. I use a 42” unfiltered floor fan when I’m grinding or welding outdoors to clear dust and fumes, it work great.
I think you made the review better showing how easy it was to fix. When you turned it on for the first time the noise that it produced was terrible. It must have been handled roughly in transit. Who is to say how long it would have lasted in that shape. Was impressed with all the dust it collected.
@1'00" The dent shows on the lower RH side. IMMEDIATE RETURN. Thanks for the review. Sent a copy to JET!!!!! An honest review may require negativity! Christie and I saw (notice is to mild a word!) the fan wobble immediately!
I hate to be the one to give you the bad news but you can make one of those for almost nothing. Talk to an HVAC guy and get a blower unit out of a used furnace. They are a similar type blower or better than what is used in that unit. (a direct drive blower not the old belt and pulley ones) make a plywood box and put on a switch and cord. Buy a filter rack from your local HVAC supplier for less than 20 dollars with a filter and screw it to the box. Done. I have used those blowers for years while doing renovating and put them in a window to suck out the dust. If you want to get fancy you can put on a multi switch and have two speeds or on the really new units you can have variable speeds. You can get the blowers for free and spend 60 bucks to build a unit that is rock solid!
Yes. I'm in the process of doing that right now. Jay Bates has a video or two on his that he made. I think he also may have plans for it on his website.
Not only that but if you really want to get fancy just buy an air handler with a DC drive motor and add one of the pleated air bear type filters with a 3M filtrete as a pre filter. You can then have s variable speed blower that had all the controls needed already in it and uses commonly available filters. Bonus is you can add ductwork to pull air from multiple places and exhaust wherever you want it.
@@falllineridge Also, Jay's is a box that sets on the floor, so it's not blowing air around at ceiling height and causing a circular flow from top to bottom of the room, which I believe will tend to keep the dust down low without moving it around as much.
I have never had the pleasure of doing much work in a shop. My jobs were pretty much outdoors all the time so no expert in this field. But i have to say all those comments in this are very good ideas. I was wondering if you took this same idea and add a activated charcoal filter if it would work for toxix fumes say in a fumehood type application?
As someone already mentioned, lowering the unit closer towards the dust will make it more efficient. HOWEVER, if you like it bolted to the beam, using vibration isolators is a simple fix for the vibration issue.
I have owned a couple of Jet products. I feel that while they have made some good tools in the past you seem to now days either get a really good product or one that needs to be returned straight out of the box. On the plus side I have never had an issue returning and item and they have been super professional about it all. I do however tend to steer clear of there tools these days. Great review, Nick from NTG Woodworking in Aus
Yup , I have a jet thickness planer and most of the screws vibrated themselves out and loose pretty quickly. Doubt they were tightened properly in the first place. A self disassembling unit.
I wish that I would have seen this and/or found your channel months ago. I have the exact same unit. I found that mine filtered the air more efficiently when it wasn't right up against the ceiling. I used a long eye bolt and a heavy duty "quick link" at each corner so that it hangs approx. 5-6" away from the ceiling. Using a fan to keep the particles moving around and not settling helps as well. God Bless.
Thanks for the great video. Even after watching I'm still going to buy the jet 2000. Surely they've received enough complaints and addressed the issues you discussed. Ceiling is much too high. It needs to be lower. Think of your work surface....the majority of the dust isn't going to get that high.
My dad made a few of these for his shop using furnace filters, bathroom exhaust fans and wooden boxes. They were wire so if the lights were on, the fans were on. They certainly didn't move as much air but they seemed to help. I'm sure you'll notice a difference.
Having been in the HVAC business, I got a sheet metal shop make me a piece of 20x20 duct with 1 end cap. I had some used furnace blowers laying around and mounted one inside with a switch so I could tap each of the 4 speeds by turning the knob. I installed 4 'L' strips inside and placed a pleated air filter (readily available). I didn't hang mine. I just put it on a shelf out of the way so I could reach the switch knob. Plugged in it and it ran great. I bought a box of filters from the wholesaler for cheap and now have a low cost unit for around $35.00. Why buy a metal box from S Korea?
As far as being from Taiwan (or even China) the products aren't often poor quality inherently. It's all about the precision the brand demands of the manufacturer. The gold standard of woodworking is mostly made in Taiwan.
Had mine for years now and it always works. Had to change/clean the filters, but that's not a big problem. Still has the original battery in the remote too. It is a bit heavy to lift to the ceiling by yourself. Mine hangs about 6" from the ceiling.
Heavy is an understatement. It was dangerous. I probably should have waited for help. Glad to know yours has lasted. Hope to get the same result from this one.
I have this unit, its probably 12+ years old. I just blew two capacitors, fixed them and now its shutting off after 20 seconds of run time. My fan doesn't spin as free as yours so I think the fan or motor is packed with dust. I've noticed their quality has gone down, I have a Jet mortiser and that broke a weld on the back, bad castings. If I can't fix it, I'll buy a Delta, Wen or Ridgid filtration unit for my shop.
These units are not inexpensive but they do work well in my opinion. Mine works so well I spend a lot replacing the filters which are also rather pricey, but less pricey than lungs.
I saw that wobble issue coming...heard it first time you turned it on, just didnt sound right, i was raising my eyebrows when you first said seems to work fine.
Oh! By the way, having the unit vented back into the center of the shop only serves to stir up more dust. See if you can direct the discharge toward a vacant or unused area (Parked car, storeroom sheet goods rack?)
I teach high school wood shop. We have 3 of them in the shop. They are adequate. Biggest issue is the noise they make is bothersome at best. They do scrub the air ... Especially if you've got 12 or 14 Palm sanders going at once. But there are much better units available. Low bid wins again vs higher quality.
I noticed the wobble in the video when you first turned the unit on. That happens a lot on new blowers coming from across the big water. I bought a smaller blower off Amazon and had the same problem but i left it inside the unit which made the repair easier.
Thank you for your honesty of the Jet air cleaner. I hate that manufactures sell china products when we could better products here in the US. I personally would rather pay more for our products made here.
Corporate America and the Politicians that are in their pockets NEED products to be made in China…How do you expect those corporations/politicians to pay for their multiple homes, helicopters, limos, yachts, private planes and best schools for their kids?!….besides…those greedy lower working class Americans demand too much…
Good video Wes, and a great & fair review. I'm surprised to see you haven't made a protective top for that lovely tool cabinet? It was shining like a dream when you first got it, and I'd want to do my utmost to keep it that way! Stay safe, and best regards to you & your family for the Christmas season.
Hey I'm new to wood working. I have a small collection of festool stuff with a dust extractor. Is this a required item in a small (garage) woodshop as well?
I noticed that wobble at the very beginning of your video. That kind of stuff can be so annoying with a brand new product. Had the same type of issues from Grizzly.
To be fair I noticed the fan wobble when you first fired it up. Then when you solid mounted the whole thing solid to the building I fully expected vibration unless some rubber mount to deaden movement. The other expectation for the machine to work efficiently was negated by operating the sander without the designed dust collection bag is not a fair test.
Actually it was an excellent test. To actually identify the shortcomings one needs dust. Frankly, the residual amount on the surface did not impress me. For Price: $399.99 it should have been a hell of a lot better.
Right, I was thinking he should have the shop vac hooked up to the sander and running it through a premium filter in the shop vac. If dust is not going into the air then the Jet system could filter properly. Curious if anyone can tell me what sarcasm is?The Jet filters would last longer with the bag on the sander but I don't think he was testing how long it takes for the filter to need changed. Rubber bushings would allow movement and cut down on stress and metal fatigue along with noise transfer.
@@brucewelty7684 This machine isn't designed to clean dust at source, its designed to filter the air. A dust collector\shop vac at source is meant to clean the dust he was showing on the surface of his box. The filter cleans the air and the tiny particles that you can't see, that are harmful to humans. So it was an unfair test with unrealistic expectations on the tool. However, the quality issues highlighted were poor.
Can you provide me with any tips on removing the fan/blower assembly? How did you keep it from dropping once unbolted from the housing? I need to remove mine to access the start motor capacitor.
I just worked on one of these someone had installed in a bar and the inner filter was brown they never even changed the outer filter so I took the inner filter out and yes the packing material was still in there and blocking some of the air flow lol
I just have to ask, my husband and I are constantly watching your videos and we highly admire the time you take to set up your cameras for all these different shots. If you don't mind, help me settle a disagreement we're having. Lol. Do you have 2-3 cameras set up all around you that you move to different spots, or do you use a drone that you just move around with you wherever you go along with another camera? Thanks in advance, and keep up the awesome work on your channel! *edit* I am mostly referring to the shots where you're driving in the woods on your tractor.
Hey Corie, I really appreciate the kind words. It really depends on the type of video and the shots that I want. If I'm in the woods on the tractor I might take a regular camera and a drone and do just what you said. Other times I'll take a regular camera and a GoPro and move them around. 90% of the time I just use one single camera and move it around a bunch. The fewer cameras the better! Hope this helps! And thank you for watching.
Jet is skating on their name alone which is tarnishing quickly, I had to bypass the switch and rewire my drum sander. They will send a new switch in almost 2 months.
Call customer service and send them the first three minutes of your video. That fan wobble is NOT acceptable. It was caused by being dropped in shipping, ergo the dent. It will cause undue wear on the shaft and shorten the life of the unit. Another FYI, When taking anything out of a tight packaging, 1. Fully open flaps 2. Hold flaps back as you roll package over on to the open side. 3. Lift packaging off the item, leaving it on the floor/bench. 4. Remove Styrofoam packaging and put aside. That way if you have to ship it back, all of the packaging is still in tact and you simply reverse the previous steps.
I would give Jet one shot to replace a wobbling fan and then it's going back. But I suspect they all wobble. That's a pretty glaring quality issue. There should be no visible runout.
I have a grizzly that is nearly identical. Have had it for 10 years and it probably has 30 hours on it. Doesn't do much good if I don't turn it on. Can't say it does much good if I do turn it on either. I think the constant noise irritates me more than the small dust does.
I've had limited success with S Korean power tools over the years. Grizzly was particularly defective. The metal was soft and either bent or striped out. I did a lot of business with a local machine shop getting new parts manufactured in order to keep the stuff running. Just poor quality and for no reason I can see.
I have Grizzly 15" Planer, 19" Band Saw, 24" dual drum Sander, drill press, and moulder. Have had them all for many years and been very happy with them all. I've found their quality to be equal to or greater than Jet or any of the others. Delta was high quality 20 years ago but is now pretty much junk since they got bought. Since I've had all my grizzly equipment for a decade or more, perhaps their quality has dropped.
this is a common thing with JET machines, I have 6 in total and all of them are great and designed well. unfortunately they are assembled like crap. so a little tinkering is always in order with JET...
@@falllineridge The problem is even with more packing is the weight of the wheel and motor being suspended as it is by the 4 brackets, you drop that box off the loading dock onto the floor and no matter how much padding there is to protect the cabinet, the motor's weight is going to act like a missile. I know a lot about packing and shipping because I ship very fragile and very heavy sculptures out almost every week as I have the last 20 years. Cardboard boxes do not work for what I ship, so I normally ship in wood crates and never have damage. When I shipped in boxes, even double boxed I had breakage from the weight of the items acting like a missle and breaking thru the cardboard. Keep in mind, the goons at UPS etc dont give a damn, and in fact afriend told me a friend of his when he was in college worked loading trucks on the UPS docks, he said when they got bored they'd have "contests" to see who could make any box marked "FRAGILE HANDLE WITH CARE" on them "rattle" first by slamming it against the wall, floor, etc. That's why I NEVER put labels like that on any shipment- it invites that kind of thing. If it was me I would have had Amazon REPLACE the unit under their satisfaction guarantee, you paid good money for it it's not your fault it was damaged.
I would never go for this device after seeing it. You could easily cobble something up with plywood, Home Depot furnace filter and a cheap fan. I estimate construction costs at well under a $100. Where it's mounted doesn't matter as long as the intake and exhaust are not up against a wall.
Taiwan is an ally of ours. It is not China, although it was recognized as China until communist China somehow replaced them. I believe that Nixon was president when that happened.
I would also use these filters as your pre filters as they are a little higher quality than that simple fiberglass jet filter and will prolong the life of the internal filter. Hey, you know, at least JET sells these for $29.99 !! I mean, if this thing cost a bit of change, all that DIY and low quality control would be unacceptable. ..... Wait, it costs more than 30 bucks? More than 10 times that!!???? China should be ashamed. Don't they have any national pride??
Two 20" box fans mount in your rafters with 20" x 20" filters would filter twice the amount air in your shop for under a $50.00 bill. Sorry you had such bad luck with what you got, research might have told you this. Sorry so blunt.
They all fail in comparison to making your own using a 3/4 or 1hp furnace blower compared to the 1/6 ot 1/8 hp blowers that come in these units for 5x the price. Also, whatever drop caused the dent, also bent the think gauge metal used in the fan - hence the excessive wobble
Beware? You are one person who had a mishandled unit. Jet AFS works great. Even you state that it works great. should have returned it for an unbroken unit.
I own two of these units in my shop and neither had a damaged squirrel cage so you could have just called Jet to replace. Your test is bogus IMHO because you do not have any accurate method for air quality. All woodshops should have a quality air monitor like Dylos or equivalent otherwise you are just guessing at what you are breathing.

My dad made a few of these for his shop using furnace filters, bathroom exhaust fans and wooden boxes. They were wire so if the lights were on, the fans were on. They certainly didn't move as much air but they seemed to help. I'm sure you'll notice a difference.
Northwest Sawyer I’m noticing a huge difference. Worth the money...too bad about the hassle. Several have commented on homemade designs.
Great review. I just bought mine. Looking forward to getting it set up
Hanging it vertically can make the wobbling cage less of an issue. That is what I did and it works great without vibration noise.
That's great if you have access to the tools and knowledge of sheet metal working.
@@Fatamus Home Depot sells blowers and duct work...
What's wrong with plywood?
Thank you for giving a true honest review!
Thanks for the review it helps me and others before buying a certain item. Keep on making your videos I enjoy them.
Thanks!
Don't worry about being negative. A review is meant to be honest opinion. When you find issues with a product, don't be afraid to point them out.
That is true. A lot of times they'll just send out a new part free of charge which is surprising.
Oh! By the way, having the unit vented back into the center of the shop only serves to stir up more dust. See if you can direct the discharge toward a vacant or unused area (Parked car, storeroom sheet goods rack?)
Thank you for the good tip!
I thought the vented air is the nice clean air as opposed to it pulling dusty air into the work area . Hmmmm I see your point
@@dmaifred The vented air IS clean, But the turbulence stirs up any latent dust in the shop.
Any suggestions on 'better units' to consider?
I noticed the wobble in the video when you first turned the unit on. That happens a lot on new blowers coming from across the big water. I bought a smaller blower off Amazon and had the same problem but i left it inside the unit which made the repair easier.
Very good review. And also remedying the problem.
Thank you for your honesty of the Jet air cleaner. I hate that manufactures sell china products when we could better products here in the US. I personally would rather pay more for our products made here.
I've been thinking that we need a holiday where we get only USA made gifts for people... Maybe next Thanksgiving - it's an American holiday after all.
Corporate America and the Politicians that are in their pockets NEED products to be made in China…How do you expect those corporations/politicians to pay for their multiple homes, helicopters, limos, yachts, private planes and best schools for their kids?!….besides…those greedy lower working class Americans demand too much…
Great video! You’ve saved me money - thank you!
You can see the wobble at minute 5 of the video but since he didn't point it out I figured it wasn't an issue.
Good video Wes, and a great & fair review. I'm surprised to see you haven't made a protective top for that lovely tool cabinet? It was shining like a dream when you first got it, and I'd want to do my utmost to keep it that way! Stay safe, and best regards to you & your family for the Christmas season.
Thank you! I use my metal table for all the rough work...so I think my cabinet will stay shiny for a while. Merry Christmas to you and yours as well!
Great Video, shows you have many skills. Ali Scotland.
Thanks for the detailed review.
you should use small magnets to balens the the fan , use them as a balance wight.
You can't balance it with magnets like a ceiling fan. Magnet's won't balance the wobble if the arbor is out of alignment.
The box looked pretty beat-up when you first took it out. Was this purchased new?
How’s the unit working now? It’s been a few years since you installed
Great job enjoyed that, thank you!!!!!
Thanks for the honest review 😉
Can you provide me with any tips on removing the fan/blower assembly? How did you keep it from dropping once unbolted from the housing? I need to remove mine to access the start motor capacitor.
Can you put a link to where one can get the filters!
I just worked on one of these someone had installed in a bar and the inner filter was brown they never even changed the outer filter so I took the inner filter out and yes the packing material was still in there and blocking some of the air flow lol
Would this be ok to filter the air in a paint shop?
Yes, that helps a bunch!!! Thank you so much for replying, God bless you and your family!
I had the exact same issue but more extreme. Mine won’t rotate 360 degree because of the wobble. How did you get the fan out of the housing.
They are called bushings or hangers who bolts air handlers to steel beams ?
Is this the AFS-1000B model?
Hey Wes, good to know! Fix it, the new one probably would be bent too.
Good chance.
How can it "exhaust" to the outside?
I would give Jet one shot to replace a wobbling fan and then it's going back. But I suspect they all wobble. That's a pretty glaring quality issue. There should be no visible runout.
I have a grizzly that is nearly identical. Have had it for 10 years and it probably has 30 hours on it. Doesn't do much good if I don't turn it on. Can't say it does much good if I do turn it on either. I think the constant noise irritates me more than the small dust does.
I notice the part of the video was cut out where you had to get the filters pass the bolt heads that you mounted.
As the air filtration extractor is not a primary method of dust extraction why didn’t you use a dust extractor on your belt sander?
How loud are these ??
You really need to use an air quality monitor to get meaningful results.
I've had limited success with S Korean power tools over the years. Grizzly was particularly defective. The metal was soft and either bent or striped out. I did a lot of business with a local machine shop getting new parts manufactured in order to keep the stuff running. Just poor quality and for no reason I can see.
That's ashame. I have a Grizzly planer that is an incredible machine. It's about 15 years old...maybe the quality has sunk with later models. Sad.
You could buy a 4ft fan open the shop door and blow the dust out that way.
Very nice 👍
read the documentation. it has a height requirement for it to be lower than you had it.
this is a common thing with JET machines, I have 6 in total and all of them are great and designed well. unfortunately they are assembled like crap. so a little tinkering is always in order with JET...
I have had one for several years and have not had any problems ! Perhaps you received a bad one .
Wal-Mart has the prefilter for $8 and change.
Great review…. Not that impressed with Jet Products.
Looks to me like it was DROPPED in shipping which would do that, or it was damaged and returned and shipped to you
That's possible. It has a dent on one of the top edges. But, better internal packaging would go a long way in preventing even drop damage.
For $400 I was hoping it would’ve done better
I purchased one of these...worst thing in my Workshop...will never buy Jet again
Taiwan is an ally of ours. It is not China, although it was recognized as China until communist China somehow replaced them. I believe that Nixon was president when that happened.
Kinda sucks the fan's imbalanced ... (wait for it, wait for it) yep, fixed.
It’s mounted way too high.
I have one on a Mobile cart and it works great
I would also use these filters as your pre filters as they are a little higher quality than that simple fiberglass jet filter and will prolong the life of the internal filter.

Thank you!
I'll bet you all that damage happened during shipping.
Not the impeller wobble. That was just piss poor MFG!
Lol, it looks the same with and without
They all fail in comparison to making your own using a 3/4 or 1hp furnace blower compared to the 1/6 ot 1/8 hp blowers that come in these units for 5x the price.
Also, whatever drop caused the dent, also bent the think gauge metal used in the fan - hence the excessive wobble
The squirrel cage is really an impeller. Just sayin'.
Beware? You are one person who had a mishandled unit. Jet AFS works great. Even you state that it works great. should have returned it for an unbroken unit.
get yourself a dust collector. this isn't made for getting dust from tools. do a little research
