"Any of you which have been down the road which I've been down and love your car as much as I love my E36, will know you want /everything/ to be /perfect./" Quote of the year, and a super motivating one. My mother told me to not get too involved in my Rote36 because it's just my first car, but I told her the same thing that "This car will never be perfect to me, no matter what and I'll /always/ want to improve, care and make it better in some way or another because there will always be room to do so." Luckily for me, she's super supportive as my father has been too (and sister with the occasional help) but yeah. Thanks for everything Pamo, and I'm sure the rest of your viewers will deffo join me in on thanking and supporting you for later on in the future.
The learning experience and having a “freshened” engine with all new gaskets, seals, bearings, rings, and cleaned is worth the time and money let alone the power upgrade. Most people will recommend a S52 over this build but you would be getting a ~25 year old M engine with unknown maintenance for similar power. Thank you for putting the time in to document this build and share with others your knowledge!
Easiest way to set up a dial indicator is to cut a section of spare cam tray and place it upside down over the fitted cam tray. Perfectly flat and at the correct angle. The 3D blocks are a great time saver if you know what you want to set cam timing at, but expensive if you are making fine adjustments. But well done chap
While checking part numbers on realoem for my build (s52 replica 86.4mm bore) i noticed the green top injectors were used in the s50b30US. It uses the m50 manifold as opposed to itb's on your euro s50b30, so presumably have enough volume to be used in a stroker with conventional intake manifold. So for anyone doing a budget build its a good cost saver. Going to have a look at the base fuel table on a stock rom but assume longer ipw to compensate
Thanks for sharing appreciated! I did a quick tot up of my project recently against my own and others advice and won't do it again. Your insight has encouraged me more that at some point I am going to do do this and enjoy the journey. Cheers
I think £1700 is really quite reasonable for what is a pretty unique engine that others won't have (and more power). You did well to keep the costs down to that, could have easily been nearer to £4k if you weren't willing to tackle the whole job yourself.
I dropped a M54B30 in mine for about £1000 including loom adapters and fluids. Yours is a rebuilt motor and set to see many many more miles! A sound investment and a great experience I'm sure.
Very valuable and well put information. Always wanted to do the same but I keep going back and forth thinking I'm just better off spending the money on fuel and tires (seat time basically). It is always good to listen to first hand experiences from someone who has actually done it and is aware of what he's doing and trying to achieve. I think an M50B25 E36 with just a couple of basic mods offers a decent amount of speed/handling/reliability/fuel economy, and from what I believe it seems that a lot of money is required to improve its potential by not too much in comparison to the investment. But the urge of improving things and making them suit our taste is always there, and what you mentioned about the experience and pleasure gained from the process is something that not a lot of people take into account when going on this kind of journey. We're in this because we love fiddling around with stuff, and that first start of an engine you've just rebuilt is a feeling that you can't explain to somebody that only cares about hp/tq figures or laptimes.
Thanks for the video ! That you enjoyed and learned so much are priceless !!!! Well done . Just wanted to suggest a future project for you . Starting with a slicktop E36 coupe . Fit a Ls1 with Tremec box. I did it ages ago and it is always exciting when i drive it . I think you would enjoy . Australian made RHD mounts and headers are now available . Cheers
Hey Pamo one question to the m50b30 with M54b30 inside. What do you mae with the 1,8mm under block pistons? Has the engine 10:1 compression? I also made at the moment such kind of engine with M52b25 Heads but I'm not sure with the piston under block high.
When I built this engine I was less educated and I basically followed another's guide. I used the stock b28 head gasket so I believe my compression is lower - I'm not sure how much. The car has been off the road for a year... I intend to pull the head and measure more carefully to allow me to squeeze more from the motor by using a thinner gasket.
I wonder if a s50 head, intake and ECU would make it to M3 spec. Actually I think it would. Isn't the S50 head just the same but with different internals.
Bigger bore, different stroke, different lifters and lots of other small tweaks. You could get there.... But by the time you have, you might as well swap an s50 long block in.
Doing this build for my 1985 e30. Currently have a m50b25tu in it and it’s been a huge difference from the engine it came with. I wanted to do this build because I thought it would give me more power and be cheaper than a s52. Question is if I just wasted my money on this build or not? I wanted to do this build mostly to tear an engine apart and build one. I’ve really enjoyed the content you’ve been putting out and want to say thank you for recording the process.
It will give around the same power, be cheaper than an s52 and allow you to experience a full build - therfore it sounds like you're going with the right way to me 👍. This in an E30 body will be great.
@@ManSeeksCivic did you switch it, chip it, if so what chip , or program it and if so, how ... I have a m52b30 with m54b30 intake cam only I built for my 1998 328is w but wasnt sure what to do about the EMS
First all thanks for all the invaluable info, but I think it’s not fair to say that is 20 or 30hp...in your last tune you hace 245hp at crank...it’s like 50hp more from your 188 at crank m52 with m50 intake
Thanks for sharing. Modding cheap cars isn’t cheap. I’ve chosen not to write down what I spend on my shit boxes. Better for mental health :) Is there any particular reason you chose m50 instead of simply swapping m54 in it. M54 is quite a bit better all around motor than earlier versions. I know you stripped head bolt threads, but it can be converted to m12 head studs and that will solve the issue. I know what you mean about driving civic is easy. I haven’t driven civic, but in my experience e36 M3 is the worst handling e36 due to weight. The best e36 to drive is compact. Being couple of hundred kilos lighter it handles and brakes better than any other e36.
Blood sweat tears and around £1700....was it worth it?
Thanks to all the subscribers for your support, it's always appreciated 👏

Money aside, the experience and knowledge you have gained doing it is pretty valuable I would say
More than the moneys worth chief. 👍

im about to turbo mine, any power mods are always worth it

Thanks and you're right. It would have been a small fortune to pay someone else to do this job.

Hey I have a question if you do this to a m54b25 do you need a intake cam
Where im from e36 is called "the cat".

Did you allready know what King of gasket I think normal one has 1,74. I'm looking at the moment for an 1,14 gasket
Not off the top of my head. This time I'd like to measure the clearances and try to spec it to suit

Soooo about tunning. How do i get started and where do i source info from? Anyone knows about this?
I made a video recently going into quite a lot of detail about the setup I use. Check it out and it'll hopefully get you started 👍
@@ManSeeksCivic Got it. Thanks Pamo
Would it be more beneficial to just do a m54b30 swap
It would be down to what you want to gain. Like I say in the video, there are lots of ways to go... What's best is down to each of us.
I just need to know what you did for the ECU/EMS ?
What specifically do you want to know?

I went with the m50 for the engine building experience Tiit. It was the learning as much as the end result that has been the fun 👍
Finally some love for the compact 👍🏻
Thank you! Wondered about this.
Go check my video about my 328i. Its tuned hard but still a 2.8
Are u running m3 cams
No, a mix of m50 and M54 cams.
Why would you go though all that nonsense when you can just chuck a 20 dollar ebay pod filter in and tell your friends its faster?
