I’ve been listening to July talk since I was like 13 (just turned 18). They have been my favourite band ever since and I’ve seen them twice in concert. As a kid growing up with 2 moms (I think this info is relevant later if you just bear with me) it was actually observing the nature of Peter and Leah’s relationship that I stopped defining what I thought a relationship was. When I first saw this band I always wondered if they were actually a couple or if their juxtaposition was part of their vision as artists. As if whether or not I knew if they shared a bed was relevant to the context of which I not only saw them but interpreted their music. As if that made any difference at all. I’m not entirely sure why my monkey brain felt it needed that information to parse my opinion or judgement, but it was the first time I realized that what I’m feeling when I watch them or simply listen to them IS, objectively, their relationship. I have 2 mothers and I’ve been looking at their relationship as a couple comprised of 2 women who are married and share a bed and that sounded “WOKE” to me lol. But what I think I’ve been missing this whole time is the LOVE they share for each other and for me and my siblings. THAT is the nature of their relationship. Love is a cohesive symbiotic union. It’s not a man or a woman or gender fluid or non-binary or trans or whatever and it’s not identified as what someone does or doesn’t do in the context of their bedroom. It’s just an expression of whole that comes from more than one person. Anyways, thanks for listening to my ramblings but I couldn’t resist after watching last night’s show and then revisiting this song again today. I love your love, friends. Stay beautiful. Keep loving.

you know this one thing.
you know you will have to challenge your love if you want it to challenge you back. your love should change you, surprise and rearrange you. but you have to challenge it to become a transformative love that makes those around you feel remarkable and new, like absolutely anything can happen at any time.
this song came to me the day i bought a new guitar in brooklyn in the summer of 2018. i couldn’t stop singing these words over and over as i strummed the old second hand strings. i love everything about my partner, including the fact she isn’t straight, and this was a time where we had decided it was important to honour that queerness in our relationship. it was a time when we started to realize that the shape of our love could transform in whatever way we wanted it to. it had grown strong enough to be challenged.

I don't have a clue what you base your comment on that the song would not have a melody.
There is some experimental/new music that do not really work with melodies but 'pay for it' has many melodies.

Agree..love the intelligence and artistic beauty they possess..but where is that spark? Four years between albums too..can be cause for concern.
Wavelength divergence.
Some of the interviews members have done about this new album is that it’s not like anything they’ve put out before. That it’s a transformative album and not going to be quite like the july talk you may have first fallen in love with (look at pay for it, only Leah singing) softer too. I too like the fast and hard stuff but what they’ve put out so far has been pretty fantastic to me!
