On three different playthroughs after completing this quest the mechanic would randomly fall dead from the sky while I was walking the wasteland... looks like I got a special wrench 🔧 and another set of armor 😏

Is that what you can do with the group after you rescue them.. It would have been nice to be able to hire them out to help you as temporary companions.
Reilly's Rangers is definitely the group that sticks out the most in my mind from Fallout 3, which is why I was very excited to see that there is a lore video on them. I was so invested in their quest, and coming across their dead bodies made me sad and anxious to rescue whoever might still be alive. As young as I was, part of me wondered if I wasn't fast enough. I wasn't familiar enough with game mechanics like it to think that this is the way it'd always be. Fallout to me was advanced af, even in terms of visuals. I even have Reilly's Rangers in my character pool on XCOM.
I've heard you can encounter Reilly, although she's badly injured in the Museum of History. That didn't happen for me, I explored the Lady of Hope Hospital and the Statesman Hotel that's connected to it. I fought my way through a ton of Super Mutants, and found the others stuck on the rooftop. Luckily I picked up that fission battery to get the elevator working
In all of my playthroughs, I've never let the mercs die. But in one of my playthroughs, I encountered one of them near Oasis and they were dead. I think it was the technion.

The community suspects that FO3 was supposed to take place 20 or so years after the Great War, Chinese Remnants at Mama Dolce, Gary clones at Vault 108, Reillys Military friend etc all reinforce this theory
0:45 the fact that she met a 'military man' really does add to theory that FO3 was supposed to be set in the years after the bombs drop when you look at it and the other evidence. I think it would have better if it had been done like that, but Bethesda just needed to include Super Mutants and the BOS. It isn't even like they couldn't have done a power armoured faction either, since the Capitol had a strong National Guard presence, and it also would've allowed them more freedom to separate their ideas from the og BOS, even if the lore around Lyons makes sense.
