This movie hit me hard with the death scene I didn't really comprehend well not the death but the grief I think and watching him go through it it definitely changed me😅😅😅😅😅😅
The movie is based on a children’s book. The book was written by a mother as a way of helping her 8 year old son make sense out of a tragedy. Her son’s best friend was struck by lightning and died the book was a way to help her son understand and process some of those feelings. The second half of the movie does a great job at showing the process of grief in someone who should never have to go through it at that age. First denial, disconnecting Leslie’s funeral with her actual death, then anger over the event at other but mostly himself, then depression over realizing that person is actually gone, then finally acceptance
Now imagine going to see this movie in theaters as a child without having read the book and thinking it was just a Narnia-esque fantasy film with whimsical creatures. I was depressed for WEEKS after that!
Imagine a classroom full of 6th graders reading the book out loud. And we get to THAT part. Our teacher prepared us for a “sad” part. We weren’t ready. Now imagine an entire classroom sniffling. A few boys asking to “go to the bathroom” so they can go cry. We ran out of tissues. Ah, memories.
Before Jess met Leslie, all he did was fantasize. He knew they were just drawings, and was okay with that. Then he met Leslie, and for a moment, she managed to convince him that fantasy was reality.
She convinced him, yes. And then, when he returned and was dumbfounded by the news that did not fit into this, the first thing he did was check his album in search of drawings of his naughty little sister. Because two explanations became possible: either Leslie herself dreamed by him, or she pretended to be dead for good reasons. In the album he found a portrait of her drawn by May Belle. So the second one is true. Then he tries to understand the reasons for what happened, for example, trying to apologize for not taking her to the museum, because suggests that this may be the reason and immediately receives the answer that he is her best friend, after which he says strange words to the music teacher. As a result, he independently opens a portal to Terabithia.
When you're a child, when another kid dies it's jarring and confusing. Leslie wasn't sick and new veiwers never expect it. That's the point. That's why it feels so out of left-field.
never saw the movie but read the book as a kid. as an adult, i can appreciate the death coming out of nowhere, because that's how tragedy often is. it doesn't matter that she had loving parents and a bright future, where Jess had so many things stacked against him. there is no fairness to who gets to live and who doesn't.
This is for sure my go to movie when I need a good cry😢 This is also the move that started my obsession with Josh Hutcherson , he has been my celebrity crush since I was 10 🤩
I watched this movie for the first time a couple years ago. Always saw people talking about it but I never watched it as a child. That moment when they revealed her death really shocked me. It felt so real. I was in denial for a while lol.
I remember reading the book for a class assignment in elementary and crying a lot. Then the teacher played the movie for us when we finished reading it. Don’t ask why we read it as a class assignment, I have no idea why.
Is the little sister played by Maia Mitchell? She reminds me of her. When I first saw this movie I was crying so much to the point it was hard for me to breathe bc my nose was stuffy. It’s such a great movie! For some reason I thought Leslie’s parents were dead and she was a orphan. Idk why I remembered/thought that but I did remember her passing. Love the videos! You always got me laughing and smiling! You do such an amazing job!
The book it's based on is from the 70s, so I think that's where some of that questionable stuff comes from, like the teacher taking Jess on a trip alone. And yeah, if a bus driver kicked a kid off a bus and made him walk, the parents would own that bus driver and probably the school district 🤣
One of my favorite films by Disney. If you’re interested in another film franchise that Josh Hutcherson is in, I highly recommend Journey to the Center of the Earth and its sequel Journey 2 The Mysterious Island. Or if you want to see another film that Anna Sophia Robb is in, Soul Surfer was really good.
when i was in elementary school we had just gotten these audio book/cassetty type things. my first experience with this story was via the audiobook. I damn near threw the expensive (at least expensive in early 2000s lol) audio book thingy across the room.
i’m surprised u never seen this! i remember watching it as a kid on Disney and reading the book. definitely the most heartbreaking book/movie I’ve read/watched as a kid
@@MoviesinDepth well I guess when their great aunt reunites with her dad after so many years it is sweet Also just realizing I don't remember her having a mom either 😭Ok I see what u mean

LETS GOOOOOO. I dont really want to spend much time but I need to say that this is the movie that shook my entire 12 year old boy existence and as a full time reaction watcher I absolutely dissapointed at how little attention this movie is getting from reactors
Glad you cried while watching, lol. First time I read the book when I was a kid I cried so much. Haven’t watched or read this story in years, though, maybe I should give it another go.
Even sadder that him running from the monster is meant to symbolize the realization that she’s gone that’s why when it catches up to him he breaks down
I think watching this as kids I had no clue what was going on because I'm so used to kdis movies having happy endings. I was like "Oh... Nothing happened this movie." not me actually being traumatised.
In fifth grade my teacher had a movie night every Friday right after school in the classroom for the kids who kept good grades, good attendance, and got a permission slip signed of course. We loved that, the whole class worked hard so we could all always be part of it. Well one week the movie was Bridge to Terabithia, and man, it had an entire class of fifth graders in tears. Teacher had to pause the movie and give us a 15 minute break to go out on the playground and recover. To this day whenever someone tries to meme Bridge to Terabithia its always met with a "too soon man" comment, and of course they reply with the fact that it came out in 2007 so how is 17 years too soon? Well it just is, it will always be too soon. Bridge to Terabithia was the first thing to ever make little kid me face feelings like that in my life, I was not ready haha
I read the book and watched the movie- the actor who plays jess did such a good job especially when jess finds out Leslie actually died and it wasn't a dream. How he acts afterwards it is great acting and heartbreaking!
