The symbolism during this anthem is very important - the crown, orb and sceptre are prepared for removal from the coffin and, later, the Lord Chancellor's wand of office is snapped in half, announcing that the Queen is to face her Maker as an ordinary mortal, and cannot carry these items to the grave like some pagan sovereign.
Phillip's funeral had this due to his Orthodox upbringing- and Elizabeth's in turn because it reminded her of her husband, whose mortal remains were waiting to join hers below in the Royal Crypt when this was being sung. Afterwards, the two were to be transferred together to their final resting place, the George VI Memorial chapel.
well, actually... the Royal Family's liking to this Orthodox hymn dates back to 1894, when Queen Victoria heard it sung at Tsar Alexander III's funeral.
Indeed! And she wished it to be sung at her funeral, but the rigid Anglican archbishop and other church officials thought it was not suitable. @@rin_etoware_2989
Her death brought a beautiful end to hundreds of years of history, and her passing rocked the world. My family is from Ireland, the history is rampant between the two of them, and she was the last living linchpin to all of it. Rest well, Queen.
What do you mean by her being "the last living linchpin to all of it"? What was she the last living linchpin to? Was it a good thing, or a bad thing? You say 'the history is rampant between the two of them'. I'm guessing one side is the Irish as a group, but what is the other group? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm interested in these visceral things which frame our identities.

This is the Russian version, not the Byzantine version. The British Royals were related to the Romanovs. King George could have saved the Romanovs after the Revolution.

It was used prior to Victoria, but not at Victoria's funeral (the Archbishop of Canterbury at the time thought it to be too "foreign")
It's not just that. This hymn is widely used in the Anglican Church during funerals.

also the Oikos, in good ole Kievan Tone 6! One of the best melodies expressing the sadness of earthly departure.
The text of this is in the US version of the Book of Common Prayer. It is recited at the funeral of virtually every Episcopalian.
And every Russian Orthodox. It is especially best in Church Slavonic
What a such beaufitul sermon. Rest in peace Lilibet.
