The Laowa Nanomorphs are better then they have any right to be.

    This is the best review of these lenses Ive seen. The footage looks great. The lenses and sensor combo are nicely neutral, but not in a sterile way. I would be curious how subtle 1/16 or 1/8 diffusion would work with these babies to take the sharp edge off the flare and to further add to the organic vibe.

      me too! right now though the only way to diffuse on the Ronin 4D is with screw on front diffussion which I've never invested in. I'm really curious to see if someone will make a micro-mattebox for the 4D (would have to be carbon fiber) to hold 2x2 filters. I should pester Smallrig about that.

    Good morning… thank and really appreciate this! I’ve invested quite a bit in Sirui anamorphic lenses and love them. Was disappointed and frustrated that they wouldn’t produce an EF mount particularly a 50mm, but seems as though Great Joy came to the rescue and I JUST recently purchased & received it! Now this is where you and this video comes in because I have the DJI Cinema 4D and was wondering how it would fit in to my future anamorphic works and here you are especially where Laowa is concern…. Love ‘em! I have a Laowa 7.5mm F2.0 mft that’s amazing on my bmpcc OG and 4Ks. So to find out the have anamorphic lenses and for the 4D is great! So again… “Thank you”.

      Thank you. Love that response, and nice to hear from someone else shooting the 4D, which is a camera I love

    Let me say this. Back then the anamorphic lens were created to get wider view and compete with 3:4 TV format. Horizontal flare, distortion, oval bokeh is side effects not the goal of the lens.
    And now lens companies try to recreate those artistic esthetic visual effects. The wide view is easy, there are plenty aspherical wide lens. The horizontal flare is easy to do practically or add in the post. Oval bokeh is that KEY ELEMENT and Nanomorphs can't get it to the desired result.

    Just found your channel. Thanks for a truly great review. Do you have an idea of the actual FOV of the 27 is? Looks like a great lens on say a Lumix gh6. Great work.

    So great to see new directors & cinematographers shooting with NEW approaches using Laowa Nanomorph & the Ronin 4D. FANTASTIC. At last people are accepting TECH is here to help us move forwards & not stay in the dark ages. Small is big & big is better - if it’s small.

    I am leaning towards the Grey Version. Seems more natural for outdoor documentary use. Going to make a doc at the 100the Anniversary of the Laconia Motorcycle Week Rally and there is going to be lots of run and gun outside. What is your take? PS - absolutely luv your work on the No Film School Podcast.

      @CharlesHaine  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh that's so awesome thanks for saying! Honestly, I think I would go "grey" myself for the vast majority of shoots, since with HDR delivery increasing so much color flares (which sometimes look wild in HDR) are less cool than they used to me. I would need to know the specific job I wanted blue or red flares for to motivate that; otherwise I'd just go grey. 100th laconia seems like a fun time!

    Charles, I am so happy I found your channel. It sucks that TH-cam doesn't know how to prioritize someone who knows what they are talking about. Thank you!
    Please help me with a question. I shoot with two cameras, Alexa Mini and a Canon c70. Both cameras have PL and EF mounts. Should I buy this lens on PL or EF mounts? What would you do?

    • @CharlesHaine
      @CharlesHaine  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      well I think the issue with the YT algorithm is I only started making videos? BUT I'M GLAD YOU FOUND IT! Honestly I would go PL; there is a very affordable RF to PL adapter for the C70, so I think that makes the most sense. AND the PL flanges are a little bigger/tougher and I have more faith in them long term. That that these lenses are heavy, but still I like a strong lens mount.

    looks like your squeeze factor is off, all this footage looks slightly off in the horizontal compression, looks like you are squeezing it off by 0.2 or so. Also the uploaded footage is very compressed and blocky and its only showing in 1080p so theres really not much to judge visually on this

    • @GuapoBhutto
      @GuapoBhutto 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Came to this chat to say this as well. Squeeze factor looks incorrect so it's hard to judge the footage...

      @franzjosefstakes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, that's why you should *always* export your footage in 4K - it forces TH-cam to provide a higher bitrate. Even if the source footage is only 1080p, you'll get a much better image!

    Question: How come you said they don't come in PL mount? They do and were released alongside the mirrorless ones! It's just a little more expensive because of the extra mounting, but it is indeed the same lens.

    • @CharlesHaine
      @CharlesHaine  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They didn't come in PL mount back when I made the video! Now they do, but they aren't out yet, shipping september. Product offerings evolve!

  • @wyldflowerfilmwerks6008
    @wyldflowerfilmwerks6008 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Charles do they come with PL mount?

    • @CharlesHaine
      @CharlesHaine  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately no: they are very small, and have a small flange focal distance, so they really are just about those shorter mounts like MFT/M43, D, and maybe X. Not going to roll out for PL.

    • @stimpackedmarines
      @stimpackedmarines 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Charles is wrong, they DO come in PL mount. You can check their site for more information. (laowacine.com/product/laowa-1-5x-nanomorph-27mm-t2-8-35mm-t2-4-50mm-t2-4-pl-ef/)

    • @CharlesHaine
      @CharlesHaine  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stimpackedmarines while the official site just says "7 mounts" but doesn't list them that I can see (laowacine.com/anamorphic/), the B&H and original IndieGogo list 7 mounts (-M43, Canon RF, Sony E, Leica L mount, DJI DL, Nikon Z, and the Fuji X) none of which are PL. PL mount is a much longer distance and these lenses aren't designed for that that I can tell.

    I wish these amateur lens startups would sell the lens when they SAY it comes out (NOV). Still can't order it!

    • @CharlesHaine
      @CharlesHaine  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, there are absolutely stories of amateur lens companies that ship late (there was a big kickstarter drama a few years ago about that, I think), I don't think that is the case here. Loawa is a reasonably sized company and usually ships on time. My suspicion is that this is related to COVID; the focus on zero-COVID in China has lead to a lot of complications with shipping products, where your city might not be locked down but the city of a supplier might be, meaning you are waiting on parts. I have absolutely no idea if that is what is happening, but my experience in general of 2022 is that chinese suppliers, even some major ones, are finding delivery dates to be unpredictable (sometimes easy to hit, sometimes hard) and it's a good time to be patient. Loawa are certainly not amateurs.
