  • (If you stay tuned at the end of this episode is a little real-time update.) We install the driveline and finally finish permanently securing the engine to the beds. Then we rearrange plywood in the boat while we wait for more engine parts to trickle in. We are so happy with our engine access! World’s best, or at least we think so ;)
    Thanks for watching everyone!
    Many thanks and much love,

You have done a WONDERFULL job on your boat !!! In the '70's I worked in a machine shop in Cincinnati where most of our customers owned boats with inboard drives similar to your rig .ON ALL of these drive shafts ALL inboard couplings were SAFETY WIRED with STAINLESS STEEL wire to keep the setscrews from working loose and LOSING you prop shaft through the shaftlog . ALSO the PROP was DOUBLE nutted & the outermost nut was CROSS DRILLED through both the shaft & nut inline and either safety wired or cotter keyed both of stainless steel. GOOD LUCK ! ! !

I really like the concept of the engine not being buried under the gangway! It's so hard to not jump forward to see how that worked out.... the suspense is getting to me.

To lift my yanmar high enough to change the motor mounts, I stuck a deflated basketball under the engine and just started pumping until I had the room I needed. worked great.

Technically they are engine mounts since they go on an engine....internal combustion. A common misnomer is to call it a motor when in fact it is an internal combustion engine. It would be like using the term electric engine.

Loosing that hair weight surely must have felt good and feel much better while working. It is also nice for me 'cause I no longer need to cringe when your hair gets close to things that spin or belch fire. That is a good drive-line design and its angles are not a problem. I would evenly paint the tube section with epoxy....grease or tar can throw-off and also possibly cause a balance problem. Ruth is awesome by the way.....

Love the idea of having the engine fully accessible
I worked as a mechanic for 45 years. I'll tell you point blank, I hated working on boats. HATED!!!
Stand on your head, squeeze in a tight hole.
Try to get the oil filter changed without dropping it in the bilge.
Good idea and great forward thinking.
I have never seen a driveshaft in a marine application, but honestly, I can't see why it will not work.
Keep those "U" joints full of grease, and the slip joint.
    Things are really looking good.

This. This is exactly what I needed to feel out of this channel - pure emotion. I’ve been going through a similar project over the last 4 years (but teardown to build up) and I’ve seen the struggle you two have felt throughout this adventure from your body language and tone, but I’m SO happy you’ve decided to be so transparent in this latest vid about the struggle. It’s not something you should be ashamed of. And absolutely appreciate the mention about marketing yourself. Touch choice indeed, but you all have the tact (and genuine demeanor) to do it well. Stay strong and enjoy the journey!

You need to paint the driveshaft for rust prevention. the yokes need to be in alignment to prevent out of phase vibration/harmonics. You mat also want to install some type of sleeve around the u-joints to keep them from slinging grease in the bilge, something as simple as a piece of 2 liter bottle or milk jug would work. Keep up the good work, slow but steady progress will get the job done.

With the discussion of winter mood and catching colds, unless one lives full time in the tropics vitamin D supplementation is pretty useful. We take 10,000 to 20,000 IU a day in the winter along with C and Zinc. The easy engine access is pretty awesome.

I love the engine box! I wouldn't bother with the side access points as they will add to the noise deadening issues, solid panels cut the noise so much better. (add later if you really really need them)....then you can move on with the rest of the boat. I worry about your clamp on thrust bearing it might slip long term. No dreadlock after launching I like it! cheers warren

The hull came out of the mould and never got finished. I put about $240,000.00 into the budget. Everything is bought and in storage as needed. Should be done this early winter. Only thing now is the 3 fuel tanks being made. Water tank is in already. Everything is wired and plumbed. Started the engine with a hose and a gallon jug. lol. Good luck 👍

Face the bolts of the engine mounts down and the nuts on the bottom, then if the nuts do somehow vibrate loose /off, the bolt stays in the hole and the engine doesn't fall off it's mounts... Would save a massive calamity!

  • @waylonhartwell
    @waylonhartwell 5 ปีที่แล้ว

There's a sound deadening material often used in cars that might work for your engine box that also might double as a bit of a heat reflected I would also recommend having some way of having the air being pulled out of the box and expelled out of the boat before and while the engine is running to help keep things cool and also if there happens to be any exhaust leaks or any fuel smells that me accumulate they would be expelled out of the box and hopefully out of the boat

Agree Sawzall is 'the best tool' for the job. Alternatively, you could reverse the hacksaw blade to cut on the pull stroke for better control in tight quarters- easier on the knuckles...

I've never worked on a boat engine, but I've seen a lot of video of people doing maintenance, and yours looks like the right choice to me. It's a sailboat, so the motor won't be running all the time, and being able to do maintenance so easily means you'll be less likely to put it off or take shortcuts.

Your drive shaft is installed correctly and in phase because you have but one complete shaft assembly,
therefore it is in phase. Out of phase can only occur when you have two shaft assembly's with a pillar
block or midship bearing between the two. BUT !!!
Double check, your parallel "ism" : The exact parallel in left to right (lateral) and in up and down (pitch) or in
3 Dimensions (Disregard, in your case the off set of the Engine to the prop shaft but they have to be perfectly
parallel or your U joints will bind, vibrate at certain speeds and prematurely wear out.
Let me re-say it in different terms, is the alignment of the prop shaft in relation to the engine crank shaft the same
in both left to right and inclination (to within + - 1/64 of an in.) Look on youtube for drive line parallelism in 4wd trucks.
In your case shim the engine because the prop shaft is pretty much in a fixed position.

An old geeser here. Had absolutely no problems with your "hobo" look. Actually, I used to wear mine, oh, 45 years ago. To my Dad's despair.
I was the first in my family to wear home-coloured T-shirts, Dr. Scholl's wooden sandals, and white/blue striped jeans - à la Jimmy Hendrix, my idol to this day !
See, you young turks did'nt invent dreadlocks and all. Marley popularize them ! But, still I envy you two for your exciting endeavour. Fair winds, young friends !
PS My cougar wife looooooves your new look !! "Down girl, down !" Look good, Man !
As for saw dust, try a hoody. Works perfectly. In cold Canadian weather too. I get angry eyes around here from young ones " Look at this Old chooch, he thinks he looks cool or what??" Don't care. As usual.

Check with the person who made your driveline. I think the shaft is supposed to be installed with the yokes 90° out of phase with each other. In phase, they will create more vibration.

The shaft yokes have to be in direct alignment with each other (within about 3 degrees) to prevent second order vibrations. So the shaft's U joint forks should both be vertical when either is turned to vertical.

Working in Tampa boat yards over 40 years we always have a Naval Engineer tell us were to place the motor and shaft. Then it gets shimmed and tweeked . Changing the prop several times till it runs quiet and true on new builds or repowering . Hope you looked into this? A drive shaft can rip out easily and fast. Good luck :)

@@MegaBait1616 This is actually a very good point. They should incorporate a couple pieces of steel strap into the floor structure above the drive shaft, which will keep it from whipping around in the cabin if it ever gets loose.

I haven’t read all the comments, and I realize this was months ago but be sure to mark the slip joint and the yoke end so that if you slide the slip joint all the way off you can get it back in the same spot, it’s balanced.

I have been watching your videos for a while now, and I must say I very much look forward to them each week. This is the first time that I have taken the time to comment, but I wanted to let you know I think you are both doing a great job. I have been working with wood and steel fabrication for a while now (as a hobby), and I can appreciate the challenge of a project such as yours. Keep up the fine work!

Now that you mentioned engine maintenance the placement is perfect.
It's funny, not 60 seconds after I said to myself the dreads have to go there was the big reveal. I'm sure it's more comfortable.
Glad it's coming together, take a break get away from the boat for a short time, recharge the batteries as it were.
    Best of luck.
    Thanks for the video.

Definitely keep a spare set of uni joints with you. I also recommend you round off sharp corners as they are nasty when you bump into them at sea. You're smart people so you probably already thought of that. She is really starting to come together.Awesome job.

I think for the two hours it takes to service the engine once, or in your case, twice a year, it's definitely not worth having to climb all over the thing ten times a day for years on end. You're already going to have to crawl around in the bilge to inspect the automotive drive shaft and grease it. I would reevaluate using modern boat design and putting the engine under the companionway. Been owning sailboats for 15 years, 30, 31,34 footers. Go look up "sunk cost fallacy" and reevaluate your plans...
