@@J.Strantz but point being that there was nothing particularly wise about it.
It was pretty clear to me even during the 90s that musicians were products that were discovered, gatekept, polished, and rolled out based on what studios felt was most marketable. I don't think this was ever a secret. Take a look back at just about any biopic about a musician.

The truth is that music comes with a certain zeitgheist. You can be talented, but if you’re too ahead of time or you went in a direction nobody is interested in you will not find immediate success. Not to mention the truckloads of artists existing worldwide. And yes, your sound arangements and producers do a lot in your final product. Prince made like 2 albums per year during his entire career, he’s bitter because all his work was not always considered… he still got the chance to be considered worldwide every now and then. I really wish people understood the basics of this business model. The industry literally lives off 2% of their acts being super successful. Which means a 98% failure rate of connecting with the public. They have the artists agree to pay for everything, so they can drop them when they don't succeed and make them pay for all expenses when they're a success. The artists pay and the label makes the money. Yet, all it takes is 1 bad year for a label to disappear when their artists aren't successful. No artists making money and paying for things. It's always feast or famine because 2% is too small to be maintained.
