I love concept of not freezing fish and catching only what you need for the next couple days. Giving the fish that would have ended up in the freezer a chance to spawn. I will definitely take that one to heart. Mahalos

Great stuff!! That guy has seen so much amazing life that I would love to see. My hairs stood up when you guys started talking about GT. That’s a bad boy. Catching a GT on the fly is on the top of my bucket list. I live in Texas and I believe we have a huge problem with meat hauling. Whether it’s on the water or on land, guys want to kill as much as they can to fill that big meat freezer in the garage. And don’t even get me started with the guides here, that’s a big problem too. I sometimes keep one fish from the morning catch, get back to the launch site and see those regular everyday captains with a boat full of people and all have their limit. It’s pathetic and very sad. Thanks for sharing this Mark, I really enjoyed it. Glad to hear you guys missed the majority of that hurricane! Stay well

Thanks for sharing your pursuit of knowledge with us. I think a lot of viewers just want to see some action in your videos but there’s a lot of us who just want to learn more and that’s why we keep coming back. I loved this video because it’s a chance to pick the brains of people way more experienced than me in diving and marine ecosystems. Hopefully you can keep covering more topics like this mark. Thanks!

GREAT video good sir! I hope people will wake up and realize how important it is to protect the Ocean's and the creatures that live in them. If we destroy the ecosystems, we are heading down a path that we cannot recover from. I'd love to be able to work with NOAA and helping protect established sanctuaries. Keep up the GREAT work my man! Looking forward to seeing more video's from ya. 👍👍

I have only had Ciguatera once, from Kole. In my experiences and talking to people, it has never been directly stated but there seems to be this idea that the toxin is more concentrated in the head of the fish? I'm curious if you have heard anything like that or if Dr. Kosaki has any thought about that. Great video, both of you are awesome guys with (hard) dream jobs!

I’ve gotten dosed from Kole as well. From what I’ve heard pretty much across the board is that the toxin does concentrate in the head and gut. For that reason I avoid the big Kole and fry them without the head.

Great video! Check out "The Whole Fish" by Chef Josh Niland. Changed the way I fish, what I keep and how I eat. I think the fishing community needs multiple grassroots PR campaigns and major fishing platforms/ voices (like Mark's) that heavily embrace and promote Ikijime, care of catch and utilization of the whole fish. We need to be more aggressive in cultivating a better public image showing our reverence for our catch and the care and excellence in how we treat each fish. At heart we want clean oceans, sustainable and growing fisheries for our future generations. Our messaging and branding are not good but video's like these are helping make the change. Thanks!

If there are varying degrees of susceptibility to ciguatera, maybe ancient Hawaiians weren't susceptible to the toxin.
