- Ruan Mei has been one of the four mysterious contributors to the simulated universe alongside the other members of the genius society. Up until this point we have only heard of her contributions and achievements but never met her in person. Well in the recent 1.6 patch of honkai star rail we finally meet the biology genius and suffice to say she seems a little, insane.
While Ruan Mei may appear rather unstable there does seem to be a method to her madness and in truth she is doing the things that she does only to get answers on the purpose of life. That said, did I also mention that in order to do this she is also trying to clone an aeon and failing that make herself into one
So in this video we are going to examine Ruan Mei's and ill show you why Ruan Mei isnt totally insane.
Some part of this video comes from the actual lore while others may be speculation on my part as we currently do not know the full story. As such take it with a grain of salt as the point of this video is just a deeper dive into Honkai Star Rail lore.

IMO what separates a genius of the society and someone that’s just incredible smart like dr ratio, at least as considered by nous, is that geniuses only care about pushing the boundaries of knowledge, geniuses are not bothered by the objective or consequences of their discoveries as we can see with Herta just starting conversations on how to monetize the simulated universe outside or ruan mei experimenting with the propagation emanator while persons like ratio who is also very smart it’s actually concerned with spreading knowledge to those that don’t understand it rather than pushing for more discoveries
The Path of Erudition, at its core, is about gaining knowledge.

Dr. Ratio isn't smart he's arrogant that he's smart and those that are arrogant about their smartness are not smart.
Also he is a subordinate of Ruan mei so yeah already a little dumb than genius number 82 i think if i remember correctly.
I feel like the main difference is the ambition each member has and their own questioning of the universe. Something separates this and I believe that labeling them as “smart” is incorrect and instead is better to ascribe them with their own pursuit of knowledge. Ruan mei as an example wants the answer and will stop at nothing to get the answer,I feel like every genius is extremely determined to find the answer. The one thing is nous the erudition calls this useless since he already has the answer. So once these genius’s find their answer, nous will be like”ok I already know, but I need help with smthn else” the geniuses true purpose is to help nous discover the only thing he doesn’t know:The meaning of the universe,which is a weirdly common theme in the lore. My theory is the geniuses who have been described as dead or just missing are with nous.

@@AdroSlice Perhaps someone on the HSR dev team has indeed read the Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy series.
A point that people keep bringing up incorrectly about Ruan Mei is her supposed lack of empathy. Ruan Mei actions are not because she can't get close to people but because she doesn't WANT to get close to people.
She is a "glass half empty" kind of person. She can't enjoy a relationship with anyone because the potential heartbreak of separation eclipses any joy she could get from getting to know someone, which pushes her to always maintain a distance to everyone. That is why she is a recluse, why she immediately abandoned her cat creations and why she drugged the Trailblazer, because a more "normal" interaction increases the chance that she will become attached.
This is also why people overblow the situation in the Station. Ruan Mei is infinitely more capable that the Trailblazer, there is no situation that we could solve that she couldn't also do so and with far less effort and so the reason why she told us to deal with the bug was not because she couldn't do it, but because that way allowed her to evade a discussion with Herta or to get closer to her creations, things that she doesn't want to do.
The Station was never in any danger because if she got it destroyed then she would get in trouble with people, and she doesn't want to deal with people.
I dont think shes completely lacking in empathy either, throughout the event theres moments where she does show interest and concern for her creations so its not complete apathy which I did mention in the video. In her background its also shown that shes very much aware of the compassion and 'love' that her family shows her but just experiences it differently due to her ability to 'smell' it.
Personally I jsut see her as more focused on work and that might give off the impression of neglect, like with the emanator she still got us to go deal with it and likely couldve stepped in if things went out of control

One thing you didn't mention at all is all the relation with the beauty path, in simulated universe she has the beauty path as her logo and she seems obsessed with the nature of life itself and the beauty it represents jn her quest. I feel like she is more in sync with that path than abundance
I don't think that's the Path of Beauty's logo.
Does beauty currently have a specific logo? I mightve missed that but I always assumed roses to be something specific to argenti as the mirror holders would presumably use a mirror as their symbol. Either way I see ruan mei more as unaffiliated (other than erudition) and the abundance may just be her family and not her specifically

She strikes me as a representative of the "Science at any cost!" trope, which honestly fits most Genius Society members rather well. I would even venture to guess that if she thought she could create a Aeon who could answer her questions without becoming one herself, she likely would due to not wanting her observations to be skewed by the experimental process. That's just my take, though, and the story may contradict that as it progresses.
Thats exactly it at least to me, shes just looking for answers and any path that leads to those answers is not something she will shy away from.

shes more so insanely passionate than insane. will she be driven insane by her experiments? only time can tell. mobius is insane, she does the most jeaporadizing things and knowingly puts others in danger for her experiments, ruan mei just pushes limits of the creation of organic life. where mobius cloned herself to escape death, and funnily enough died because of the clone manipulating her into... yeah if ya know ya know, ruan mei would prolly just try to find another way to prolong her life.
so, in my eyes, ruan mei is walking down that path, but she's not quite there yet.
What I find curious is whether she is currently still 'normal' or has gone past the threshold of insanity. Her upbringing seems normal enough so I imagine its the lack of answers that is slowly causing her to be this way
The thing is, while Mobius was very much insane, it’s clear she actually has quite a lot of capacity to care for people. She personally engaged the Herrscher of Binding to save the original Klein in spite of the risks to her own safety, cares enough about Griseo to look after her when she can (she created Griseo’s weapon) and her simulation was willing to give up her pursuit of immortality and die just when she was about to achieve it during the Herrscher of Corruption attack because it was the only way for her to save ELF Klein. While Mobius does carry out morally dubious experiments, she has repeatedly shown she’s capable of compassion over and over again which humanizes her greatly.
Ruan Mei has not shown many humanizing qualities. She claims to care for her creations but still abandons them anyway. She repeatedly tricked Stelle/Caelus and did not even apologize for it. She also doesn’t seem very close with her fellow Genius Society members either and it’s implied her Grandmother is still waiting for her to come home but she never visits her. She just isn’t a very sympathetic character from what we’ve seen so far.
Ruan Mei grandma might be watching Ruan Mei progress to make nothing too serious happen while also wanting to see the results.
Thats very possible, I often just default to evil outcomes because im pessimistic 😂

I guess its just how far she is willing to go to get her answer, i mean shes already cloning stuff so its a short leap to doing crazier stuff i suppose

Firstly I find Ruan Mei to be dishonest and as such must question what her real experiments actually were. Keeping in mind the 1st experiment was her Merovingian cake. Another Matrix reference and a clue. Her 2nd experiment seems to be an unspoken social experiment, more of a joke imo, where she recreates various people as living food in a reclusive biome of the station. More of a nature vs nurture experiment as the environment is not particularly altered except in a small artificial way that appears more as 3 separate display areas. I claim it as more of a joke as these creations are little more then bouncing heads without appendages. Without much ability to interact with their own environment this clearly became a social experiment heightening the empathic and intellectual need to interact with one another. Her 3rd experiment could be said to include the Emenator of Propagation but this is more of a Jurassic Park reference imo. One in which we as the MC go from experimenting with living food to becoming the living food in the experiment. This tells me that the real experiment was the MC from start to end.
1st was a test of the MC's internal cognition. 2nd of the MC's empathic qualities and social interactions. Finially a test of the MC's raw ability to survive intense encounters and how that might effect the MC. Now if the MC is actually a prototype aeon with the Stellaron this could be some sort of systems test, not very different from something Herta might devise herself if equally inclined.
I feel like while exentric, herta is completely opposite to ruan mei, while ruan mei is using bio engineering to see if she can create and become an Aeon, Herta is at her core, a Historian, although the simulated universe is her baby, she wants first and foremost to unveiled the mysteries of the universe in the past using the simulated universe for it, and she is obsessed with it to thr point of apparent insanity but thats the case with all genius society members, look how Screwllum is a machine but he is the most "human" member we have encounter, but he is a machine, he shouldn't be human by any means so he is also crazy by machine standards
@@davidsamudio3899 He's not Crazy because he's a diplomat who aims to bridge Organic and Inorganic Relations. Who managed to Convince the IPC to not wipe out the Robots after the Machine war.
Him being the most human makes sense.

If her Myriad Celestial trailer is anything to go by, Ruan Mei met N'zoth early on in life. That would explain much I think.
The first time I saw that thing encased in Ice first reaction was to wonder if there were any eldritch horrors in the universe. Then i remembered march 7th was also out in space, trapped in ice...
Ruan Mei is one of the spacefaring Xianzhou native right? Is she one of the long life species? Or a shortlife species like YingXing?
I know there were many Xianzhou natives who left the Alliance ships to join IPC, Denizens of Abundance, Nous, Elation etc…there was a crisis of beliefs among the Xianzhou after the whole revelation of Yaoshi’s immortality blessing…
She's a longlife species, but not from the Xianzhou. She's from an unnamed planet blessed by abundance.
The Xianzhou aren’t the only species in the universe blessed by the Abundance

This sounds like someone who was traumatized by the death of a loved one, and now they're obsessed with trying to figure out the purpose of life if all it leads to is death. I've seen characters like that before in movies and tv shows. So do we know how her parents died?
Its not mentioned how her parents died but for some reason its explicitly stated her grandmother is still alive
No she is insane. We were talking genocidal manic levels of insane and I love it lol.
Except the game forces us to be her Friend while we are more Hesitant to Kafka unless you start picking every friendly option with her.
She is CRAZY!
This is how you can tell people who read the story to those who don't. Taking away life is antithetical to what she wants. She has problems caring but she isn't unable to feel like Kafka and fear.

Given, that she is making chimeras that are intelligent and sentient, that we can communicate and reason with the desert creatures, is extra ghoulish. You are missing the point that her experimentation from the start has huge moral and ethical boundaries already. This is what we know of. I think you failed to understand the gravity of what she is doing, and doing in a completely non-caring manner.
She doesn't purposefully try to hurt others, so no.
Whatever happens, she must not become aware of the Imaginary Tree. That can not possibly end well
You mustve missed the dialogue thats hidden but himeko does mention the imaginary tree and at the begining of the game but the thing is they wiev it diferently than hi3rd universe
And if himeko is aware of it than the genious society is aware of it too
Supposedly Akivili also set out into the universe in search of the imaginary tree though it was never confirmed whether it does indeed exist

No arguments there, having wanting to gain answers at any cost could easily turn her villanous at any moment but right now she does seem to be still kinda somewhat good

Being all powerfull never been in her agenda as the line she spoke before trailing to become aeon in her trailer is to find the real essence of life.
Also as random guess from me: i think her grandmother could be yu qingtu. Another genius society member a recluse like ruan mei fond of.
Oh thats an interesting thought, her grandmother being another genius society member maybe thats why her family name wasnt revealed?
Keep in mind to take it with grain of salt tho as it is my speculation only. But yep ruan mei seems detached to other member except yu qingtu where she showed fondness in the end of the questline. Also herta directly asked ruan mei about yu in the meetings followed by " is she still alive?" Indicating ruan mei might had contact more often with her compared to other member.
she's not insane. I think she's actually a kind hearted person.
she want the critters she created to have home in the Space Station.
