Epic walls of sound per usual by these 3 musical geniuses.. Love the synths, the amazing percussion and the coexisting shades of light and dark... Thanks for watching! 🥰
@Retro Reactions - One of the things about this song that will never stop to blow my mind is how Alex and Neil continue to alternate between 5/4 and 6/4 when Geddy's vocals first come in and the latter then sings and plays the keys in straight 4/4 over it, with his phrasing of the lyrics fitting perfectly into the odd rhythms. How on Earth did they come up with amazing stuff like that?? 🤯😄
Best song about a meteorological phenomenon ever written. 😊
This one is one of my favorite compositions from them. It's sublime!
Thanks for getting to this one. A favorite of mine off Permanent Waves. Love the background you chose.
My two favorites tracks from _Permanent Waves_ are "Jacob's Ladder" and "Natural Science".
Cool... will add your vote for NS!
Geddy is the most emotive voice that I know.
Yes, and so unique! I hear he's a nice guy too...
Always loved this Track 📀
Bought it in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1981.
Moving Pictures, is really good.
Excellent Band.
Neil is sadly missed.
Great Lyrysist and Drummer.
Keep Rockin'🎸📀🎹

Thanks for watching! Glad you love this band. Appreciate you as always Ronnie..
A great song to listen to while a thunderstorm is happening.
Very atmospheric. ❤❤❤
Sadly we don't get much rain here, but I can see how Rush would be great thunderstorm/rain music! Thanks for stopping by...😊
A great song when you are storm chasing.
@@retroreactions.... That's too bad. Well, we got snow last night. All the trees look very pretty.
Haha, I saw snow a few times in my life! One day I will move somewhere cold!!
Can't get enough of Rush. Used to have an 8-track in my car and there were some long drives - fortunately.
Nice! Great memories....I can picture you coasting down the road, maybe singing you heart out!!
Permanent Waves is my favorite Rush album and this song is one of the reasons why. 😊
Hello. Great taste! Just master musicians, and I've only scratched the surface!
@@retroreactions.... I was 13 when I heard Fly By Night around 1976 and was hooked from then on. 😊
🤗 Watching you react to Rush is just what I needed to avoid my workout 😏 for a few minutes more! 😁🥰🐰
Haha, glad I could be a pleasant distraction 😂
Phenomenal!!
Yesss! Thanks for watching
Possibly the best RUSH track on perhaps the best RUSH album. (Guess that makes this one arguably the best RUSH song of all time!) THANKS.😊☮
Hey there! Glad you love my song choice today! All Rush is great Rush to me! Appreciate you stopping by...
@G-MAN1958 - I reckon the live version on 'Exit...Stage Left' is even better! 😁
I think it is a fun song. IMO it is instrumental magic. I'm a huge Rush fan, so..... : )
Ah yes, Rush creates a lot of instrumental magic!! Happy Tuesday 😁
Happy Tuesday!! 😀Tell Boris I said Hi. 🤣
Haha, OK.....you will be seeing him again VERY soon....😏
Truly one of their finest. It’s classic Rush building there way up to another climactic and well punctuated finish. Permanent Waves was probably the last of their deeper, more conceptual material aside from Moving Pictures. And Jacob’s Ladder is a huge factor in the success of that album. Nice review !
Hello. So their 80s work is more straightforward rock songs? At least they kept the keyboards! Thanks so much Steve!
@Retro Reactions - Maybe check out 'Distant Early Warning' some time, which is the opener of their '84 album 'Grace Under Pressure' and which had been my very first Rush impression when I was 19 (in '89) and which had instantly gotten me hooked on them; There are still elements like odd time signatures, and it's still Rush at its core, but it sure is more straightforward than their previous albums, and this switch was happening already on 'Signals' , the album prior to 'Grace...' 🙂
Cool, I added DEW to my list, thanks
Superb track and well described. You nailed it !
Aw, thanks so much....always trying to do better/my best at the time....SO much to try and take in during these 1st time reactions, as you are well aware of...
Who writes a song about a thunder storm? Rush does baby....no other band would put together such a master piece....
I love the phenomenon of Jacob's Ladders. They're beautiful and kind of mystical looking. One can see why people thought they were ladders to heaven (or from heaven coming down). This song so beautifully evokes a thunderstorm then the calm afterwards. And wonderful guitar work from the underrated Alex Lifeson. The time signature games they play before and after about 4:00 are fun too! Mostly in 5/4 with one or two extra quarter notes thrown in occasionally for extra flavor. Around 5:45 the guitar sound is reminiscent of the end of "A Lerxst in Wonderland" from La Villa Strangiato (ca 5:14 to 5:40 of the version I found here on YT). Easily my favorite Rush song.
Hello! Glad I picked your fave Rush song today! Thanks for the great musical description. Always nice to see ya here...🙂
"the shifting shafts of shining weave the fabric of their dreams" - sheer poetry
Yes. Thanks for watching!
This particular Rush tune is the only one where I have to listen to it to remember it but can't remember a note if I just see the title. Weird. Love it.
Hmmm interesting. It's like a secret song for you....Thanks for stopping by!
Unusually for Rush, this is almost like a mashup of two of their other songs, Xanadu and La Villa Strangiato. But it's more atmospheric than either of those songs. And although it ebbs and flows, the overall direction forward to the triumphant coda is much clearer than their previous efforts.
You should do The Camera Eye from Moving Pictures. It's only a year later and has a lot of similarities, but the changes clearly show where they were going, much moreso than the rest of that album. And the lyrics (and title) introduce Neil's shift to 1920s through 1940s novels as a major influence that ran throughout the 80s.
Hello. Great analysis. I added your vote for The Camera Eye, thanks!
@Ian Schmidt - I'm adding my vote to 'The Camera Eye'! Amazing song, and I love how the bass takes off during the guitar solo in particular 😊👍
Vote added!
Alex!!! Some of his best work here. The usual excellence elsewhere. Geddy Lee's vocals are somewhat restrained/on a lower pitch, a sign of things to come.
RIP Professor
BTW, don't confuse this with the Huey Lewis song of the same name (although that is a good song of it's genre, power pop)
Ah yes, I keep forgetting this is 1980 so maybe a bridge between their 70s and 80s sound? Still need to get back to some more 80s Rush! Ah Huey, should add them to my channel eventually...
@Michael Baucom - If I remember correctly, Huey Lewis & the News covered that 'Jacob's Ladder' song from Bruce Hornsby & the Range not long after its release 🙂
@@mightyV444 Bruce Hornsby did write the song, true
I'm guessing it sounds much different than this one....
Ah Bruce....so many artists, so little time!!
If you haven't seen the film Jacob's Ladder I highly highly recommend it.
I have not. Just read the synopsis. Sounds ultra creepy and disturbing! Tim Robbins is an amazing actor! Thanks for watching and being first today 🥇
Please keep up the Rush, older Genesis, and Yes 🙏
Ah yes, Rush, Genesis and Yes will be featured for the life of my channel, or until I've heard everything! Will be continuing through my 80s Genesis album journey before heading back to 1970, but I just did Stagnation a few days ago, may do another old one this Sunday and plan to do the full Lamb album reaction next month!!
@@retroreactions.... Awesome! I'm a huge Rush fan, but Lamb may be the best album ever
Yea, I'm excited for it, since I've heard In the Cage and Carpet Crawlers and loved both. It's for my 5K sub milestone, which I'll hit in about 4 or 5 days....
@@retroreactions.... The Lamb and The Wall are my favorites. They both are Lie back, eyes closed, with headphones, listen from start to finish albums
2 other awesome double albums are Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Physical Graffiti. A jaw-dropping triple live album is... here goes- Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends, Ladies and Gentlemen Emerson Lake & Palmer
Everyone raves about Neal Peart’s drumming, and it is great. But because there are only 3 musicians in the band, it stands out more than larger bands. Take, for example, Kansas; an incredible American prog band. Their highly underrated drummer, Phil Ehart, is also great. But he had 5 other incredible musicians playing with him, and another member of the band, Kerry Livgren, was the most talented prog songwriter in the world. So there was as much talent, if not more, in Kansas, but it was spread out over double the amazing & talented members. Just consider that.
Hi there. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Makes sense. Overall just many legendary drummers spread across the 70s musical landscape...Thanks so much for watching!
First time I've knowingly listened to them though they are 'plugged' quite often. Found this one a bit repetitive, didn't seem to go anywhere, but as Spock's Beard have opened up my mind, I'll explore them a bit.
Oh, they have epics that go places! I HIGHLY recommend their song "2112"! It blew me away here and is a long highly interesting musical journey, if you'll commit to around 20 minutes. "The Garden" also brought me to tears....
For what it's worth, the records immediately after this one shifted hard towards much more concise songwriting. Same high concepts, much easier listening.
I kind of figured....same top quality I'm sure..
@Retro Reactions - The album that followed this one, 'Moving Pictures', is their most popular one, also because of their signature song 'Tom Sawyer' being on it 🙂
Gotta love Rush! Great song… not my favorite from this album, but great nonetheless. I’ll be looking forward to see what new artists you have up your sleeve.
Glad you liked. Hm, well if I had to guess, you've probably seen 1 of the first 2 live...but possibly #3 and 4 you've never heard of! I certainly haven't. Then again, I'm chatting with the retro music and concert-going king here!! 😁
Hard to pick a best song from Permanent Waves with this, Natural Science, Freewill and Spirit of the Radio all masterpieces. 😊
I remember enjoying Spirit of Radio.. I will add your votes for NS and F, thanks!
@@retroreactions.... Natural Science is one of their best tunes imo and probably my favorite on the album, and Freewill has all three guys soloing at the same time followed by Geddys highest vocals, whichever one you choose to do you will be pleased and amazed. 😊
@@retroreactions.... also if your curious as to how beloved these guys are to both fans and other musicians check out this short 2 minute clip of the announcement of them being selected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. th-cam.com/video/IK6dS15hq24/w-d-xo.html
BRANDON us old folk can't stay up too late. And for RUSH! EUGH! Loathe them, great musicians etc etc I know but leave me cold. You weren't to know this so will give you a like tho am going BBB now. Gotta get my amazingly groovy suggestion list for you. I forgive you haha.
If you don't like Rush then don't listen. Music is subjective.
@@debbieplato5107 I have tried with them before. I didn't know what Brandon would be playing and its nearly 2am here and us aging rock chicks gotta go to beddybyebasket!. So I stayed up and it was...Rush! I don't dispute their musicianship just not a fan. No biggie.
@@DawnSuttonfabfour Well, it is not quite 8 pm so for this old rock chick it is still pretty early. Rush isn't for everyone but they are my favourite band and I have always liked prog rock.
Cheers
Yea, I have to work on these late releases... 🙁 I hope you like some artists for the rest of the week- we have a total of 6 acts for the rest of the week, 4 being new to the channel! Sleep well.... 🙂
Yeah, everyone has a unique musical index/profile, just like a fingerprint!
