Definitely struggled with Tree Tops as a kid. Getting to that island where the green thief goes was the only thing in the whole game me and my brothers couldn't figure out ourselves, instead we had to enlist the help of our cousin. I can't believe how much simpler the speedrun strat of "pressing X late" is compared to the intended route.
This TAS just reinforced how few purple gems there are in the game. There are just 24 before Gnasty's Worlds, and 8 of them are at the end of Jacques. Then after that, the two in Gnorc Gnexus, five from Gnasty himself (plus one in his world), and a whopping SIXTY in Loot, almost double the amount in the rest of the game combined.
It's nice to see a reaction video again!! Its amazing what people can do with TAS! Also 10:46 I struggled with treetops for the first time AS AN ADULT lol, I really love the level design its so imaginative and well done but it was hard to figure out.
Some people say that TAS speedruns are stupid, because "why would you want a computer to play a game for you? that's boring". But more often than not TAS creators are able to find stuff that was previously thought to be impossible. I think it's quite impressive and interesting, it's like a branch of game science.
it's one of those weird optical illusion colors wear It's perfectly in between 2 different colors like depending on the person some people see pink, and some people will see purple, And to be honest, I can see where both of those people are coming from. Because sometimes it looks like pink to me, and sometimes it looks like purple. so I say it's "purink," lol!
The colour of the background behind an object can SUPER influence the way you see it too, it's a fun colour theory thing. Like in Cliff Town, Spyro looks a little bluer than usual to me because his cooler purple contrasts with the warm sunset in the background, and the gem looks pinker 'cuz it's a warm tone already.

TASes & speedruns are interesting cases for studying game design since they showcase unexpected exploits and unintentional interactions. Thanks for backing up to explain those split-second tricks!
😎☕ They're purple because spyro is purple lol. But also, convoluted answer, they're unambiguously purple in Spyro 2, which (while I got it at the same time as 1 in 1999) I played more thoroughly and saw such gems in first.
I've always referred to them as magenta, though if I were being anal about it because I'm an artist, they could be considered fuchsia because they're more of a purple-y pink. Watching these always breaks everything I thought I knew about Spyro. I thought I was doing so well. 😂
id call that gem color just "purple," or maybe red-violet if you wanna get technical. there is ever so slightly more red than blue in that hue, though that may depend on lighting hm. gem at around 8:28 has additive magenta -- even red and blue -- as one of its brighter shades
they are called purple gems according to the PAL game booklet, the booklet in NTSC versions doesnt mention much about the gem values. I used to think there was silver gems but then I realized I was confusing spyro with crash bandicoot 3
2:30, i normally acctually refer to gems as there designated ammount given, and sometimes there color. (when i first played spyro i refered to magenta gems as 25 gems lmao)
Nice vid man, I've missed seeing these TAS reactions and all the proxy shenanigans they entail. I'm calling the 25 gem pink mainly because the Reignited Trilogy solidified them as such.
If you compare the color choices of gems to a color wheel. They seem quite deliberately to be full RGB variants. Where you would get Red, Green, Blue from using full color on 1 channel. And Yellow, Magenta, Cyan from combining full color on 2 channels. That would make sense as they tend to be quite a nice contrast to anything else one might texture in a game. And could require less memory size on the disc, depending of the implementation. Thus magenta seems like the most likely correct answer to me. Lighting in games does drastically affect the perceived color though, so it can be tricky to tell the exact true shade of a object. I think magenta is more of a professional word. And purple is more of a generalized name which overlaps the same color area. You could argue Spyro himself is also subject to the same logic also depending on where you sample the color from. On the darker area he is clearly purple. On the brighter more lit areas he is closer to magenta. But they refer to him as a "purple dragon" by lore. And by association, I have also always reffered to the gems as purple.
I love how you said that people only found out a year or so ago that you can enter the Gnasty Loot head early, when I told the community YEARS AGO that it could be done by clipping from underneath...
@@Dayoman, same. I tried capturing video a while back, but my computer had such an abysmal framerate when capturing that it made the Icy Cavern community best vid look smooth as butter.

This tas is the definition of purple fuck
1 = Red
2 = Green
5 = Blue
10 = Gold

5 gem = blue
25 gem = purple

True!
Purple are the 5. In spryro 2 and 3
I think i say purple, though if there were more colours im sure i'd start to specify it as magenta
Im surprised that theres no magenta gems in gnorc cove or harbor
Spyro 1 theyre pink, Spyro 2 onward, purple, thats how i see it.

Purple or indigo. Anything else is blasphemous.

What the hell is magenta? They're purple.
Magenta is a primary print (subtractive, CMYK) colour. Purple is a secondary light (additive, RGB) colour, the combination of red and blue.
