I'll be honest, just too many comparisons to the source material to really take this serious. This is NOT how you approach viewing new adaptations unless you enjoy being disappointed. If you dislike this interpretation then you must really struggle to enjoy any adaptation of a prior source material.
With that said, I do agree that the "test" from Garp felt out of left field. I think if they made his motivations known earlier it would have helped. I also agree that Syrup Village is by far the weakest part of the show.

I disagree as I feel since the show is the same name and says in trailers and such that it is based on the original story by Eiichiro Oda that it is fair to compare them. My main complaints all come back to the fact they only had 8 episodes so some things were cut and changed. Similar things happen when books are made into movies, usually the people who have read the books say it was better, that’s my position since I’ve watched the anime.
I just felt like it could have been more/better if it had some of the parts that were cut out. Thanks for sharing your opinion about it, what did you enjoy the most about the show??

@@PhattyPattyMatty I guess my main gripe with your complaints is that you want something that is impossible of a LA adaptation with limited episodes to work with. It did mostly everything the anime/manga did, but did it in a streamlined approach. For instance something I especially loved about the show is how it gets you onboard with a character and makes them likable and feel like part of the crew sometimes as quickly as 30mins after meeting them. This is something shows fail to do after a whole season with a character, so I was REALLY impressed. To contrast this was one of your bigger complaints, that they didn't feel like a crew because of the limited time we had.
Now I can understand how if that character feels like an 8/10 in the LA, and feels like a 10/10 in the anime (because of scenes that needed to be cut) and how that could disappoint you. But to me I'm just happy he/shes an 8/10 with what little time they had. Nothing will feel as fleshed out as the anime/manga, but I don't think that means we didn't get the best possible outcome of the show that we could hope for, with the limitations they were given. (I heard this season was even cut down from 10 to 8 episodes)
As far as things I enjoyed about the show:
*Luffy's character:* He shouldn't have worked in LA, yet the show walks this razor's edge of campiness and seriousness, that is personified in Luffy, and if he fails, the show fails. So props to the actor and the writers for giving us a multi-faceted Luffy that works better in LA and kind of let's us know what kind of show we'll be getting. One with big heart and
      longer limbs.
*Set design* Everything in this world feels tangible, because it is. In a sea (no pun intended) of movies with CGI backgrounds, the effort to make this world seem real, BECAUSE IT WAS, is what really sold this show to me. I do think some of the costume/creature design was a bit off the mark though. As it wasn't sure how accurate to the anime it wanted to be. Some things felt VERY anime (the snails, the marines in general, Alvida) others super grounded and realistic. Hopefully in S2 with more budget, they'll be able to create a more in sync world.
*Casting* Maybe the best casting of an already existing fictional piece of work to ever exist. And I don't just mean looks, but every one of these actors went above and beyond to do what was necessary to embody their character. Seeing Zoro's actor actually do his swordwork MATTERS. Taz learning kickboxing so he didnt need a stuntman to do his karate MATTERS. Emily Rudd knowing every frame of the manga by heart MATTERS.
*Performances make emotional moments hit harder* I'm a pretty empathetic person, and yes I absolutely cry at animated movies and tv shows, video games and fictional stories. But there is something about a real human being, expressing genuine emotion that will tug at the heart strings more than anything. Sure we didn't have all of the backstory to make the emotional moments hit harder, but I think at times the performances caused the scene to land even better than the original. (Im looking at you Zeff)
I'm sure I have more aspects I enjoyed, but this is already too long. Glad to discuss this show with you!

As an outsider that knew nothing of One Piece before watching the adaptation on a lark, I agree about the Grandfather reveal; it really undercut the tension that had been building because before that I was like 'Dang this old guy is nuts and he really wants to capture Luffy for some reason' but once I knew they were related I found it way less likely that he was going to actually hurt Luffy, because y'know... Grandfather. I think they could have saved that bit of information for much later and it would have been better. Overall though I felt like it was pretty good considering how clearly wacky and out there the source material was, the only thing that 'stuck out' to me was the clothing in that half of it just looked like it had been sourced from modern day Target - it felt sort of weird and jarring, but that could be a matter of taste.

I am glad this got to experience One Piece in some form, I would saw try the anime, don't expect to watch it all right away but chip away at it arc by arc... some are much slower than others. I agree that they actually made the world feel like One Piece as it is very wacky and just seems destined to fail adapting it but they did such a good job. Just felt rush with the number of episodes which led to changes I didn't like, I didn't consider the clothing really while watching, mainly the colours matched the anime so I didn't really notice!
      Thanks for watching!!

The truth is that it was just ok. entertaining even. Everyone is loosing their mind because as you said the bar for anime live actions is so low.

Right, there was moments I genuinely enjoyed, but there was changes that I felt hurt the show and made it feel rushed... As for the bar being low, I meant it in the fact I'd say most adaptations of Anime to Live Action turn out horribly (Death Note, Dragon Ball Evolution, and recently Cowboy Bebop) so that was what I meant by the bar being low for this adaption being good, really hasn't been many good adaptions.

I just felt it could have been better if there was more episodes at the end of the day, if you enjoy that is also fine and I’m glad! I hope this show leads more people to give the anime a chance!!

@@codystartin999. I feel you bro but i understand why they left the walk out! Its because the Live Action covered mostly the manga more than the anime! Meaning walk to arlong park is a anime only scene!

@tylergraham1670 But...as people who have stated that they are big One Piece fans, they should have known that fans of One Piece would definitely want that scene in there. Also, that would have been a very awesome cinematic moment, and they could really ham it up in live action with the music and camera shots.

They already did there best because if they will follow the source material it would looks stupid for people like you and you will bash it of course, Garp was not supposed to follow them like that in the anime they will just find each other in 1 particular Arc in an island and will briefly discuss something about his dad they change that to Garp following him since episode 1 in Live action because Oda wants the marines to be involve heavily in live action version story that is why the scenes is switching back and forth from Luffy to Garp and Coby

    • @warrenharshaw7677

Actually, Oda was very reluctant to bring Garp this early onto the story. Steve Maeda said it himself that he had to really persuade Oda to let him put Garp in.
