It depends on the teacher. My children's school district posts their previous year's salaries. I don't know what everyone teaches but some of the salary ranges don't make sense on my end. I have seen anywhere from $46,000-$100,000+. I don't know if it is the subject, number of classes, how many different subjects or what. I may also depend upon if it is a college credit course and considered a CTE (Continuing Technical Education) class. I know that the superintendent was making a hefty paycheck though, far above the teachers. I won't even get started with the athletes and what they make, that doesn't make sense to me either.

@@hgib3I’m willing to bet that no teacher is making six figures. It’s most likely some kind of admin that makes that. Some professors make six figures, but that is NOT even close to a salary any normal teacher makes. Also, even if your school somehow pays that much, does that mean all these other teachers are lying about their low wages? You can even Google the average salary of teachers and see that they’re low not even close to six figs.

@hgib3 : I would love to know which teacher makes $100k+, as you claim. I've never met any teacher in my almost 30 years who makes that.

@@hgib3 The discrepancies are usually due to cost of living. Teachers in Northern California can earn up to $100,000 late in their career, yet the cost of living (rent, housing costs, taxes, etc.) in those areas is extraordinary. In other areas, like rural areas, teachers may cap out at $50,000 because the cost of living is much less.

As a retired teacher, I said the same thing years ago… YEARS AGO! In fact, district admins were told to sub one day a week, just to remind themselves just how hard it is. School board members should do the same! Oh, wait, most school board members do NOT have teaching creds but make decisions for respective teachers & students. Maybe they visit buildings, which they should, unannounced, to see what a trying day school staff can have. I get it, my teacher profs.

I will be honest, I am almost never absent because I am afraid for substitute teachers. Before I am absent I make sure my students know that if there are negative comments left by the sub. that it will not be a good day when I return. I love my kids, I am a high school teacher, but they can be very mean to a sub. This year I have had to break my streak of not being absent for 7 years and the only reason I was absent was because I had to go to IB/AP training. Before the 7 years I missed due to Jury duty, Parents we do not complain about being a teacher, I love my job and I love my students. I have been really lucky this year with the students that I have, what we complain about is everything else that comes with teaching. Behavior problems in the classroom should not exist, if you help us out with your kids behavior at home, we (meaning me and the rest of the students in class) can make it a successful year and we can focus on what we need to learn. I enjoy teaching but we can use a little of your help. 🙂

The problem is very real. To the point schools can't even let teachers have a sick day because there aren't subs available to cover classrooms. The "other jobs are hard too" argument is an attempt to turn it into a suffering competition. That ain't what teachers are trying to do. They're sharing what problems they face. The kids are mentally checked out and their parents aren't holding them accountable for their behavior. It's not a teacher's job to raise their students.

How do you go about becoming a sub/teacher?

Check with your school district. They all have similar but different processes and requirements. Some require a college education. Where I live, you just have to had graduated high school and pass a background check.

The problem is that there are teachers who deserve the high pay and then there are those who need to get paid less. I wish there was a way to make merit pay actually work for all school employees.
