Fixing my hand well pump at the cabin - Ice cold awesome water!

  • My primary water source at the cabin is a hand well pump but it wouldn't prime so I had to pull the pipe and put a new footer valve on. The well is drilled through 100' of rock and the water down there is ice cold! I tested the water and it's only 102 ppm dissolved mineral salts - that's pretty good. I also have ways to filter drinking water. In the video I reference an AquaFina filter but I meant to say AquaRain.

    South Alabama here. Recently installed a shallow well 25 ft deep. Water table is 14 ft. PVC Well point is 24 ft Deep. 10 ft of water. Jetted out to the water table then had to beat 2 inch pvc 10 ft deeper. Secret is flushing out the sand a couple feet at a time. Drilled 1400 small holes into the first 4 ft of the 2 inch casing. Used 1 1/4 inch well point and pipe 8 ft long then reduced to 1 inch the rest of the way. Easier on my 1 hp Harbor freight Well pump. the last 10 ft of this well is into the coarse white sand. Very clean and drinkable water. For the top of the well, trial and error, ended up using a reducer to actually go from 2 inch up to 3 inch so I could turn a one inch 90 out the side sealed with 5200 marine adhesive. From there I installed a PVC check valve in the dirt and on to my pump in my 14 by 16 building. After the pump I installed ridged 3/4 to one of three filter housings nipple together and out of the last one, ridged again to my hose faucet. I did install a union before and after the pump should I need to remove the pump and service it. The only metal is my pump it self, two 1 inch galvanized 90s and the little bit of ridged pipe at the filters.Capped the top of my well with a 3 inch wing nut type test cap. Allows me to service the well and treat it. wont be pulling the well point out. Once a suction has been put on it, it pulls sand all around it and locks it in place. No metal, no worries I guess. No valve at the bottom. just the check valve at the top. As long as air cant get in, the water cant come out. 14 feet is not a lot of vacuum pressure in a one inch pipe though.

    Things like this are what is missing in todays urban life styles. A sense of pride in doing for yourself and a lift of the spirit in knowing what can be accomplished when we take responsibility for our oun well being. In 1975 my wife and I along with our 8 year old daughter pulled the plug on our misarable suburban existence and moved on to our newly purchased property off grid in western Montana. We lived in a surplus military wall tent for almost a yeat while we built our cabin. I really enjoy watching your videos, brings back memories. I'm 71 years old now and plan on building another cabin this spring God willing. You show in your videos one of the most important assets for independence, good humor and a positive attitude. Well done.

    Our off grid cabin is water access only. We have to bring in drinking water. Use 20 liter bottles (about 5-6 gals) with a hand pump for that. The cabin water is a tote that we fill with lake water with a gas pump. Fills in about 10 minutes and lasts about 3-4 weeks. Was gravity fed until a few weeks ago. Added a 12v pump and a propane on demand propane water heater. Man, nothing like having a hot shower after a day of chores at the cabin. Love the vids man.

That would have given my clues on what to look for. Now I will start my search for a replacement 'pump foot valve'

    Love the pump. We have a 1000 liter water tote we use at the cabin. Its gravity flow at the moment but we need more pressure to operate our hot water on demand water tank that works on propane. We are going to install a sure flow water pumper on the system to build the water pressure to 55 psi. The pump works on 12 v so we will run it off our solar panel system. Thanks for sharing!

    Anything submersed like that and supporting weight (which obviously the pipe has weight and then water in it makes it even heavier) I would think double clamping might be considered? I know they fit pretty snug and a quality clamp rarely fails... like you said, if that pipe falls down in, it's gone. Great, informative video. • @NB88

    Is the 102 ppm before or after the filtering with AquaRain. I use Britta and PUR. All are good. Britta especially for the chlorine on the village delivery system. Thanks and I enjoy your videos.

    • @NB88
      @NB88  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 102 ppm is unfiltered. The Britta and PUR are good for removing the taste of treated water but they don't take out the dissolved mineral salts. However, Zero water filter does a really good job of removing the mineral salts. The AquaRain is more money and better but it takes out bacteria and viruses.

    Just a couple questions did you drill the well yourself and can you use it in the winter.If the footer valve has a check valve not allowing water to flow back out would the water in the pipe at or slightly above the ground freeze.I would love a well the previous owner tried to drill one but got down about 8 feet hit solid rock and he quit .I'm only using water towers now and hate to let all that crystal clear water go in the fall .I did however dig a big pond so at least the water goes in there and isn't wasted.Do you need professionals if you are sitting on rock and can it be done.Ive seen you tube videos on diging your own.would be great to not have to conserve water so much .My 2 sons love their showers any suggestions you have would be appreciated Thanks Dale

    You need to drill a 1/16 hole in the pipe about 4 feet below the top of the well. This lets the water drain down and your well pump will not freeze.
