    20years ago when I was a high school student I stayed in Worthing.
    I learnt English in Swandean School of English and stayed in local house.
    As you know my English skill has not been improved that was a short stay and I haven't studied English hard after coming back to Japan.
    However I studied more important things there. My life in Worthing was really really fun and amazing.
    Today suddenly and fortunately I remembered Worthing and finally came to this video.
    I miss Worthing and the family which took care of me. At that time host father had already retired. They had a dog.
    Thanks for reading my comment.

    I am a Hongkonger. Worthing is so lovely. Richard, thank you for sharing. I am going to retire and have a plan to leave for the UK. I'm considering Worthing as my future home. I believed I would spend my entire life in Hong Kong which was a great city I love. Hong Kong is not the same now. It's so sad that I have to leave. See you soon Worthing.

      @TheClassicalSymphony yea poole hasn’t got much to offer either.
      Worthing is/was a lovely seaside town a lot better than Hong Kong under Chinese rule.

    • @robpbandit
      @robpbandit 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @TheClassicalSymphony been there done that.
      We’ve got some nice places too in Worthing.
      Lakes, hills/countryside, beach etc
      Same shit different dog.

    • @paulhamj6175
      @paulhamj6175 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @TheClassicalSymphony oh look at the two of you ffs!
      I will just offer a third opinion, that of the person from the United Kingdom who happily states that I LOVE my country so much for it has so many beautiful towns like Poole and Worthing, and so many medieval villages -in counties like Sussex especially, where you can check out Alfriston and East Dean for starters. Both beautiful places to live if you are coming from another country and have a bit of cash to spend, because they ain't cheap!
      Then we should be mentioning the gorgeous Northern counties of England as there exists such gems as Yorkshire, where you will find unmatched beauty and people with such a friendly countenance that you'll not believe they arent family. It's just the way in Yorkshire, they treat you like their own. Not only Yorkshire but the north of England in general you'll find a difference in the people. They are much more trusting and open up there for some reason.
      Then we have Scotland. I simply do not have enough time and certainly lack space here to tell you about that stunning place.
      Wales, too. Stunning.
      If you are from another country and are reading this and so happen to be planning a visit to the UK then please heed me when I tell you: Visit all countries of the U.K. because each has such a different slant from the others. They all are unique!
      Oh and make sure you drop in on a lovely place called Dartmoor! One of the few places to still have wild horses roaming the moors! And don't worry, they pretty much don't care about people and won't attack you.
      I advise you rent a car in Exeter, Devon and drive through Dartmoor, stopping at one of the car parks you'll see just by the roadside in some old woodlands. Park up and join the other walkers through the ancient woods, drinking in the freshest of fresh air as you stroll by slowly. Try to go there in the summer as it's just gorgeous. Very lush, very green and very very memorable, trust me. And once you've finished there get back on the road and you will come to a very small place where the road crosses over the tiny river or stream by way of a small stone bridge. There are a couple of shops and a cafe next to this little picnic area at the wee bridge so park up and get a lovely cup of tea and sit by the babbling brook hehe

    the man sitting outside McDonald's had a dog with only 3 legs and every time i walked in worthing town i used to see him and give him a wave and some of my change or a bottle of water and then i think he got some help and i kinda miss dancing along with my mum to his songs that he plays on his guitar but i happy that he has moved on.

    It used to be a quiet and a nice town . Nothing like what you showed in your video.

    I’m now 45 and except for three years when I was at Uni in Cardiff in the late 90s I’ve lived in Worthing all my life. Absolutely love it. The sea to the South, Downs to the North and so close to Brighton, London and Portsmouth. My commute to work each day is three miles along the coast, I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.

I’ve stayed at the Chatsworth. Quite nice (but could’ve used AC in July). Love the seafront and the Pier. Love the charming residents. Love Cissbury Ring. Can’t wait to return! Nice film. Evoked some rose tinted memories of a two-year stint in Worthing during my addled late teens. I did the Worthing-to-Victoria trip many a time, nights out in London. Had a tranquil oasis retreat among those cafes on Warwick Street. Had the occasional drink in that bowling alley but my local was the Beachcomber (better known as the New Street Inn), which you bypassed when you cut through that alley. Rarely able to bypass it myself, I lived round the corner on Marine Parade. Never partook of that pebbly, smelly-seaweedy beach but did enjoy the ambience of the fair along the prom on summer nights - and the convenient cuisine option it facilitated.
    Yes, I would, and indeed might yet, revisit Worthing - in a kind of 'Jack the Ripper tour' sense of retracing the footsteps of my late teen aberrations. No fairground hot dogs, though. And no getting drunk. And certainly no more ripping: I don't have the legs to scarper from the peelers like I once did.
    Not that they helped me to any great effect back in the day. Me and a mate scarpered up an alley (no euphemism) in avoidance of police pursuit after some misguided youthful shenanigan, I ran knee-first into a knee-high wall and somersaulted onto a pile of bin bags, matey took that as a cue and landed on top of me, serendipitously concealing us from the view of a copper who walked past seconds later. We gave it a minute, dusted ourselves down and calmly proceeded to traverse our escape route - and walked straight into a few more of 'em. It was a fair cop, we were resigned to a night of b & b with no television. Although at least I had my cigarettes, lighter and watch. Matey had surrendered his at the desk on checking in so he had enough for both of us when we were released a few hours later. To be honest, I think he was unnecessarily petulant about the whole incident. I was the one hobbling.

    • @franceskelly7316
      @franceskelly7316 ปีที่แล้ว

      @RichardVobes Unlike you I too see the windmills as beautiful, but better still, they will prove to be lifesaving if we can get fossil fuel use down. I'm writing this 5 years since you made the video and the climate emergency has developed faster than the scientists anticipated. We may already be too late at 1.2 degrees of warming, and I know every form of power generation has some drawbacks because there are so many of us to cater for, but the windfarms have benefit. I don't know how much harm they did to the seabed but I hear they, like shipwrecks, get colonised ultimately by marine life. Someone tell me if that's true.
      Actually the seaweed tale is interesting. We now have a protected marine area nearby and life in the kelp is returning, so we may have more seaweed on the beach in future, but let's hope more environmentally aware councillors will see the benefit of free fertiliser if it arrives on the beach again.
      For the benefit of those surprised by the shingle, it's built up every year to try & hold back the storms that could flood over the promenade otherwise. Sometimes the waves do crest over the top, so another reason to back windfarms to try & slow down rising sea levels.
      As for rain, well apparently there's a microclimate which is less rainy after heading west from Brighton, so actually lots of sun.

      I think it hems in the horizon so the sea front looses its sense of simplicity and escape from the world of man.

    I've lived in Worthing about 20 years I found specially the seafront I've come along the Street not to mention the poor destitute is homeless people that often sleeping shop doorways and other parts of around the town it seems to have a big drug problem I will say they do try and keep Worthing clean and tidy but the crime and problems in the town centre is on going

    I've done the reverse of some of your viewers as I share your views on what's going on in the world and watched the more serious content videos first. However, really good to see you do content on visiting places. I started with Worthing because whilst I am Cornish born and have lived back in Cornwall for many years now, I grew up in Worthing. I'm a similar age to you ,so I'm aware of the changes you have shown. I raised my daughters' in Worthing ,and Littlehampton and still keep links with friends there. Sometimes I do get nostalgic for dear old Worthing so lovely to see. I remember The Thieves Kitchen in Warwick Street, and recall the smell of seaweed on the beach because the farmers no longer took it away. I worked briefly in a hotel on Marine Parade, The Kingsway Hotel. I joined the queue outside The Dome for an hour when Grease opened way back in 77! Great video Richard, and when all this current nonsense gets too much, I shall reminisce!

    I remember the grotesque bowling alley being built, so many memories around these streets. I'm wondering if there's a video which continues down Montague Street as it leaves the precinct where my mother used to have her shop. How many times have I trod these areas. It's always sad to see so much change, none of much for the better.

    I really enjoyed your tour. I have never been to Worthing so it was interesting to follow you around. I come from the seaside town of Weymouth in Dorset which is stunning and I love swimming in the clear sea. So no I wouldn't go to Worthing as I would hate swimming in the seaweed on a gravelly beach. But it does have more shops and a pier. I do love piers. Ours was demolished decades ago. I send my regards to Worthing!

    As usual I opened up Google maps to see where you were and what you were talking about. It looks like you live in a very nice small city! I really like that Worthing is so pedestrian friendly and that the people actually use the open shopping areas. Goring-by-sea also looks interesting and I'm thinking there must be a bit of history around the fact that two farms still operate so close to the sea. The land developers must be licking their lips and plotting how to steal that prime piece of real estate!

    • @RichardVobes
      @RichardVobes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Most people on the street seemed to ignore you, there were a couple of waves and head-turns but nowadays I think people are more used to people with cameras and microphones. The weather was great, that makes a big difference. Great job.

    • @RichardVobes
      @RichardVobes  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Simon - yes, I do think people are getting use to seeing people pointing cameras at themselves and doing ego selfie - some of course don't realize it is for TH-cam - but they are catching on.
