Ours was one of the many families shipped from London to Harlow in the late fifties. I spent most of my life in the town exploring those same green lanes on the periphery. Eventually my love of hiking (nurtured here) led me to migrate to the Lake District - a walker's paradise. Your wonderful video brought a tear to my eye. Thank you John.
The aeroplane that flew past is a BAC Strikemaster. It operates from North Weald as a historic flight experience. Its a two seater. Lovely video John.
Many thanks for the info
What a lovely video. My family moved from the NW of England to Harlow (Peterswood) in 1970 and those fields and woods between Latton Bush and Jacks Hatch were my growing up playground, until the family moved deeper into Essex (Stansted Mountfitchet) in 1974. I've always been grateful to the town planners and visionaries who created places like Harlow post WW2 and gave many a young family a good footstep in life. New housing, new schools, splendid civic facilities and Henry Moore sculptures in local shopping centres! By chance, my first ever job was in Epping High Street and in later life moved to another new town, Bracknell, also a semi rural urban planning gem like Harlow.
Borage petals have a wonderful taste of melon
I lived in Peterswood too, from 1969 to 1984!
@@davidlawrence9091 What number? We were 17 and I attended Peterswood Infants and Juniors right behind the house
@@markcowell8096 Number 109, and I went to Hare Street primary, and then onto Netteswell Comprehensive! school till 1973.
Great walk, John. There isn’t enough coverage of “biblical pints” on TH-cam. Wonderful. All the best.
Thanks Mark - I often think it could be a whole new strand of content on the channel
So wise to put heat health ahead of mileage goals. Modeling yet another important aspect of walking strategy.
Great walk! Enjoyed the arty shot where you were walking across your own planet. For a few seconds you became The Little Prince.
So exciting to see the area near where my ancestors lived before emigrating in the 1630s. My great grandfather was named Harlow.
Well extreme conditions invariably invoke the most classic moments, and this film is no exception..
"The significance of this roundabout is that its the last one before a pub."
If THAT'S not a John Rogers classic, then I don't know what is. Harlow Old Town looks amazing, as do many of the scenes of bucolic adjacency with The Town or suburb.. I think the beer looked promising. Glad you had your moment there John. 🍺🍺⭐👍
Wonderful, even though parts made me sad I don't live in the country anymore...👍
Stayed in Harlow Youth Hostel back in the day, Harlow New Town is quite interesting for post-war history nerds like me. See the New Towns Act 1946. 8 new towns nearish to London Basildon; Bracknell; Crawley; Hatfield; Harlow; Hemel Hempstead; Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City. The march westward continues.
Sob... The one time I'm out of my home town and you come and do a walk.
The sculpture trail is amazing, with works from Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and many others. As a small bit of history most of the cycle tracks in Harlow follow the original roads in the area and let you navigate almost the whole town away from cars.
John if you ever want to do the sculpture trail, I would love to join you and point out a few Harlow facts and points of interest.
I often do the walk from Harlow to Rye meads, or Bishops storford to Harlow, might try the whole thing when it starts getting cooler. Great video, thank you 🎉
What a wonderful walk on a day in late summer. Parts of it could have been at any time in history. I'm amazed that there are public paths just crossing someone's fields.
Great walk John. I like your idea of retracing past walks
No man steps in the same river twice for its not the same river and he is not the same man, Heraclitus.

Loved this one John. Reminded me of your walks around 2016. I can't wait to buy a copy of your new book! 😊. Dave in Dublin.
You’ve got it the wrong way round John. London is a built up area that just happens to be over the horizon from our the Essex countryside 😊. Beautiful elegiac video, thanks.
Lovely video John and very atmospheric. I find this time of year a little haunting as the year is slowly winding down but I do love the autumn.
John, please do more walks in new towns.
Great video as always. I do believe North Weald aerodrome was used in the film The Battle of Britain
It just occurred to me, I've been watching your channel for quite a number of years. I would say, around 4 years.
Many thanks Tony
Beautiful walk, I remembered the water tower. Harlow looks really nice, I think I also might have been tempted to stop there for a drink. Well earned I reckon. Looking forward to the sculpture trail whenever that might be.
Lovely video, John. I lived in Sawbridgeworth in the late 80's and all around Epping, Hainault, Barkingside in the 90's. Nice video of memories.
Kore I loved that sculpture, and The Crown boozer looks good too! John, I recently walked both the Cotswold Way and Peddars Way, a dream formed during lockdown. You were one of my inspirations, for which I raise a pint to thee. God bless. JD
You deserve that drink John, lovely walk love that forest where you shared the idea of monks walking once…walking in peoples past footsteps for me makes history come alive
with weather like this there is no better place to go for a walk.
What a lovely video , feels the Indian summer is still with us
I love your walks John, that bring good old times back 😊
Lovely walk around the country side of London.Thank you I enjoyed it.Cheers from Buenos Aires!!
John - lovely walk covering ground that runs adjacent to many roads I have used over the years yet I have not walked there yet. My guess is that the jet might have been on its way to Duxford just north of Harlow where a lot of classic aircraft are stored and restored. I sympathise with the "blocked route" syndrome and actually take a pair of pruners and a very small folding lopping saw with me on walks in case a branch has dropped in a storm or brambles have blocked the path.... not so much for me as for possibly less able people who follow who may not be able to make progress. Love these "out of town" videos as much as the urban ones and watched the Hellfire / High Wycombe one again the other day as I have worked near Woburn Green for 26 years and recognise so much of your route. Thanks again - very restful and engaging content.
Cracking walk to Harlow John with some lovely Essex countryside to walk through and a couple of beers well deserved at the end!!!
Path to Utopia?? I always wondered where it was.😬😬 A very nice walk though. Great video. 👍👍
Oh what a fabulous walk and the most perfect medicine as I fight a particularly nasty bout of the plague
Lovely walk on a lovely day, and a lovely beer (or two) at the end of it.
Thank you as always John.
Thanks John. I'd say this is a classic John Rogers episode. Definitely one to watch again in the cold gloom of winter. I always appreciate what you do. Cheers.
1) in my USA city we are getting new roundabouts every day - a change in the way cities are trying to control excessive speed and crashes I believe and 2) that was a quintessential John Rogers walk: "these may all be wrong or they may all be true" but what really matters is the walk
Thank you for a very Interesting video. Way back in the late 1960`s, I used to drive around Harlow just looking on newly laid roads with nothing else to look at and wonder what would be built there. Harlow's new town has memories of a big bowling alley and shops you could drive close to. Life changes apart from centuries-old fields that surround the once Modernism Harlow brought to its residents.
Hi John, I always enjoy your videos but the light and the big skies made that one extra special. The fading light in old Harlow just rounded it off perfectly. Thank you.
What a glorious Autumn walk. That hazy September sun is just fantastic!
A lovely treat on a very wet afternoon off...Great and interesting video as usual John, big sky....love it 😊
Thanks Helen
Another great walk. Many years ago when I was a teenager, living in Highbury, I would do many cycle rides along the B roads and un-numbered roads all the way to Sawbridgeworth and beyond. In those days there did not seem to be any roundabouts whatsoever.
Another uplifting walk John thanks. Lived in Harlow for 8 years, recognised some of the walk as walked most of Essex in our time there as well as the knackering commute back to Epping, the roundabouts and a welcome pint or two at The Crown or Marquis of Granby - happy days 😅
Definitely a two-pint landscape, John! Also Beautiful! ❤
Thanks Ashley
Epping reminds me of my completed Essex Way walk to Harwich. It took me 2 weeks to complete. 😊
A Roman temple was found in the industrial district within a mile of your route. it seems from artefact finds found that it may have been an industrial area even then - pottery, lovely floppy mud! Harlow has mini round abouts but the ones you called mini were a bit on the maxi size! Believe me - my patch!
Thanks Jacqueline- I need to spend the day in Harlow. The heat must have distorted my sense of the size of those roundabouts
Do you like sculptures? We have a lot of them! Yes it was hot that day!
Old Harlow looks quite nice.
What a delight on a Monday evening John.it’s an area I know a little but your walks always exceed my limited knowledge. Thanks for this.
Yessssss. It is raining here. Autumnal so this video is a treat. I miss london so much John. I bought gin at mothers ruin in Walthamstow. Old Tom. Best Gin ever.😢
Glad you enjoyed it Heidi. The weather's been rotten here as well
What a joy to take that walk John. Blinding stuff.
Would you ever do a more in depth video on milton keynes? covering the druid/leyline connection and the amazing green spaces such as campbell park and willen lake? There is also symbolism all over the city in the form of statues and structures.
that's a great idea Jamie
Could you also cover Aylesbury and more of Chiltern Hills ( Ashridge , Halton ) that would be my pick …
When I saw the map near the beginning, I thought you were going to travel from Epping Forest to The City of London with some wonderful tale about how and why the City purchased the Forest. But I was wrong. You took us on an equally wonderful trip in the opposite direction.
Nostalgic moment there, remembering my mother remembering all the young men she knew who never returned to the airfield.
Thanks John 👍🏼🍻
Loved that John. If you're ever in Harlow again, you could go to the Stow and have a pint in The Essex Skipper, the first pub completed in a New Town, built in 1952.
Great part of Greater London to walk and cycle. I need to get there myself one day .
Oh you were so close to the Grade 2 listed Frederick Gibberds garden and his home containing the archive and library just as it was in his lifetime.
Excellent video John reminds me of my childhood when my parents took me to epping frequently, Bob
For me John, this has been one of the most enjoyable walks, the late summer colours of harvested land ! Wonderful thankyou very much, viewed for the second time !
Out of all your travels, that's got to be the most well-deserved beer at the end. Look forward to the new book, John
Thanks for the Pint at the end mate.
Looking forward to the book and the next swift slurp. !
Brilliant vid as always.
Peace.
Must say. Love the open country and the camera work.Cheers
Great video of a place I've never visited. Roundabouts are unpopular here in USA. The nearest one to us is in Inwood about 20 miles away.
terrific! i'm looking forward to your next book, John! love from Canada! 😊
Superb. I get so much enjoyment from your videos John. Wonderful walks, interestingly narrated, and beautifully put together videos. You've inspired me to get out that way this weekend!
Many thanks Antony
Must admit these are my favourites of yours John. Lovely video. Thanks as always. Hope you get a few more warm days in before autumn really sets in.
Another cracking walk... and the 360 shots are amazing!
thanks Marco
Wonderful as always. Thank you!
Oh what a beautiful walk. I spend all my time as i watch these videos see-sawing between gratitude that we have these to watch and outright seething jealousy i'm not there. Ho hum.
Thank you John - what a joy, loved this walk.
Lovely scenery, John. I recall the Stort walk fondly, as you passed through my village, Roydon! Look forward to the book release and hopefully a launch in the Wanstead Tap!
As the weather turns this is a reminder of summer just a week or two ago. Lovely walk just up the road from me.
Usual interesting walk on a beautiful autumn afternoon ending at a place I know quite well
Many thanks John and in that heat Eight miles must of felt like 15.
I would love you to do, Broxbourne, Wormley, Bencroft Wood, Newgate St. Hornbeam Lane, Hatfield House one day. A really nice varied walk with loads of ancient old paths.
Thank you, John. Some great moments of magic down those ancient shady lanes and golden Essex fields. At least you didn't encounter any mad dogs on this high temperature trek. Looking forward to the next one . . .
Another fantastic video as always. I like some of the new camera work/ editing you included as well (overhead selfie stick shots & the scene turning into a sphere). It is always great to have a pint at the end of a hot walk. Keep up the great work.
I think it would be great if you incorporated a pub visit on your walks, with a chat on a chosen subject… or just a sharing of your pub ambience 👍🏼 Nice one John 🍻 ps good to hear an update re your book 😊
Beautiful picturization ❤, you look so happy and energetic and enjoying the weather Beautiful scenery and landscape...😊beautiful sculpture of Betty Rea😊thanks to share us
Look forward to a Harlow walk
Great as always. I love England. The paths, trees, and flowers are special. Thank you John Rogers for this enjoyable walk. Blessings from eastern Tennessee. 🙋🙂 Wishing I had grown up and lived in England. ❤️ 🌳🌿🌾
In the early 1970's I went to college in Loughton for a couple of years. We had someone who lived in Harlow Old Town.
That was a great walk, though it did look hot and thirsty. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Really enjoyed that, and the late summer sunshine provides a lot of atmosphere. Love the escapism these videos provide.
A well deserved couple of pints John. You did well to stop at two…
Wonderful John, thank you. Hope you have time to continue your walk around the East Anglian cost at some time.
thank you John xxxx
Where I live in the states, we have plenty of round abouts. Not as many as years ago but we still have them. Not multiples in a row like I witnessed in the UK and Ireland where you can get dizzy going round and round. I liked the 360 shot which puts on your own little world. A walk like this one out in the country where there are not a lot of people, you were so that was fitting.
Thank you John really enjoyed this, I liked the bit where you were walking on a ball and the new camera your using, the extra angles are really good Thankyou
Thanks for sharing John.🙏
A fine end to the video in a fine establishment!
Beautifully narrated as usual John, many thanks ❤
Great walk John, you deserved that pint!
John walks the earth. Fantastic!
Great walk and video John. I think we could hear you were getting sapped of energy from your voice. A very welcome pint
a cold golden pint, well deserved.
Great video, hope you had sun cream on. Thank you John.
What a beautiful walk John. See you on the next one.😊
A wonderfully atmospheric summer stroll John. Thankyou for publishing this video record of it.
Nice walk thanks john i bet that pint was super nothing better than a hot day long waik pint
Another splendid video John, that 1st pint would not have touched the sides and then slowly sipped and enjoyed that 2nd pint. Well deserved they were. Always look forward to your videos - have a great week!!!
Spot on Neil
Another very enjoyable video John. Thankyou
Love your Epping walks as it’s my home town.
It’s a great place Colin
Another great video John - thank you. I also walked that Saturday, 9th Sept and it was deser- like to say the least - suffice to say, mine was only 6.5 miles, but I felt the coolness in your beer at the end ! Mine was a G&T, but liquid nectar none the less (*_*)
A couple of refreshing beers at the end of a great video, only to find the toilet on the train out of order, been there, done that lol
Pretty certain that was a Jet Provost that you saw John. Great video as always, cheers mate.
