Well explained sir. My doubt is how western disturbances casues rain in norh west india during winter. Bcoz wind flows from high pressure to low pressure. But as we say it is winter in india then high pressure exists. In the case of high pressure in india how western disturbances move towards india ?? Thnku sir.
Hi when analysing atmosphere we need to consider atmosphere as layers of air. In winter there is high pressure at lower level due to descending air (, details you can see in Indian monsoon lecture), now we know that when there is hp at groud there is a low pressure in upper atmosphere. The jet streams flow over India during winters. The western disturbance i.e extra tropical cyclone extends up in atmosphere and unlike tropical atmosphere they are not dependent on supply of moisture from ground. So the extr tropical cyclone is dragged by jetsteam towards India. Think of the extra tropical cyclone as a ship in ocean the ships are dragged by ocean currents. Something very similar occurs here
Sir, are the extra tropical cyclones over mediterranean region formed through out the year? Because the contrasting air Massed are present there for whole year
Sir, at the point where ferrel and hadley cell meets, ST westerly jet blows in upper troposphere. This is a region of high pressure because winds descend here. Then, how can we have low pressure over the Mediterranean region? Isn't the wind descending creating a high pressure at the surface (including Mediterranean sea)
I did not get the context of the question so I will give a general answer 1) the wind is descending so it creates high pressure at surface but it also creates low pressure in upper atmosphere from were air is leaving. Extra tropical cyclone is caused by low pressure in upper atmosphere and not at surface, you can watch video on extra tropical cyclone. 2) high n low are relative terms so if there is some phenomenon going on and it creates even higher pressure suppose in caucus mts then the surface pressure at Mediterranean sea will become low in comparison to higher pressure on caucus mts. 3) subtropical hp zone is dynamically created hence it's neither that stable nor that strong. If your doubt is still unresolved then please provide details related to your doubt
You said formation of cyclones takes place due to some frontal activity. Others say water cools down slowly in winters as compared to land due to its high specific capacity, land remains cool. Thus, creating a low pressure on water (forming cyclones). Some says the sub tropical westerly jet takes the water with it as it flows over Mediterranean, Caspian sea and brings rainfall in India.
@@abhaygupta1813 well dear all the points u mentioned are true but u have mixed them up. Let me clarify. There are two types of cyclones tropical cyclone, the one we see in Orissa Andra. They are formed because of hot sea water creating lp. The other is extra tropical cyclone, it is created by frontal activity for to formation of lp in upper atmosphere. Now this extra tropical cyclone when moves over caspain or Mediterranean it gathers moisture and reached India as western disturbances
@@abhaygupta1813 in case anyone says that western disturbances are created by hot water of Mediterranean then it's completely wrong as extratopical cyclones are formed by frontal activity and they can b formed over land too
Sir how jet stream can pick up temperate cyclone from one place to another, jet stream flows in upper troposphere while cyclone ends in upper troposphere .?
The jet steams flow in upper troposphere, while the extratropical cyclones extent till upper troposphere, now if you see the occluded front and clouds which are formed they extent till upper troposphere. Moreover, remember when jet stream flows the adjacent layers of air also feel the effect and they also flow with reduced velocity, so when extratropic cyclone comes close to it they will feel the drag froce cause it to move. Now please remember that geography of these things are much complicated then what we study in UPSC, what we study in UPSC is A B C of geography, it is very difficult to understand shakesphere just by knowing A,B,c. There are many higher level concepts of fluid dynamics and physics involved here. and make it worse there are many diverging models which explain these things. So, i would suggest to confine onself to UPSC because even if you write all these in exams i doubt you will get more marks. BEst of luck and keep studying

Got it sir.
Thankyou so much for prompt clarification.
Sir, are the extra tropical cyclones over mediterranean region formed through out the year?
Because the contrasting air Massed are present there for whole year
They mostly form in months of December n january
👍👍

Completely confused what is the actual reason of disturbance(cyclones) over mediterranean region in winters.

Polar Jet Stream or Subtropical Jet Stream, which one of the following is responsible for western disturbance in India during winters?
Tropical jet streams
