What I like about your channel is its about education. Gear reviews are fun and I do like them. But there really are not a lot of channels like yours then teach people for free. I'm not saying selling workshops is a bad thing at all. But I think its really nice what you are doing.

Loved it. You nailed the splashes easily. Really helped to understand how you used the black sheet to reflect on the rim of the glass. I hope to see more done with just 1 light and composites, and maybe something on posing the products later on !

Thank you for the awesome tutorials. You have great information and present it well. Have you ever considered a simple device above the martini glass with a trap door? You would set the fake ice over the trap door which slides to the left or the right and drops the ice. This would eliminate your hand shadow...but may at the same time introduce some lighting issues. Don't know.

Hey there, welcome to the group! I think that's a great idea with a mechanism to drop a splash, I've seen people do this before and it is great for consistency! Looking forward to connecting, thanks for tuning in
... or a simple clamp with a solenoid to open the clamp. Pair that with an adjustable timer circuit to trip the flash.
Fine tune the timer so the ice cube is exactly at the point where you want it when the flash goes off.

High ISO allows for a lower flash setting. Lower flash powers have a briefer flash duration and freeze motion better. So that is one factor. Thank you!

Hi there, that is me using a Nikon Remote to trigger the camera. I do this to avoid shake.

What shutter speed were you using and how did you get it to work over the max shutter speed for flash?
I am using 1/200 shutter speed and low flash power which is as fast as 1/250,000 which fits inside the max shutter speed for flash sync.

TetsusaigaDrgn No problem, thanks! Just water here, though water+glycerin mix would work for a more viscous result. No trick to making the glass stick, though you could use tack or double sided tape!

Hey there Matt, thanks for watching our speedlight tutorials! 1) Macro lenses are beautiful and good glass makes great sharp photos, though it is definitely a bit of a "luxurious" purchase as 90% of the overall look ends up coming down to lighting & post. I normally shoot with my kit lens around 50mm so compression-wise I still have a ton of freedom. 2) I'd just keep shooting and practice like crazy. I've got a question. The ice cube has to be shaking the glass a bit each time (thereby rendering the initial shots useless or at least more challenging to be layered in). Taping the glass down, perhaps?
That's a fine idea! Since the glass is cylindrical-symmetrical (does that make sense?) the minimal-shaking wasn't too big of an issue I found. Next time I'll try and post the post-production!

My question is this. How do you shoot coloured liquid in a glass (be it bottle, wine glass etc) against a black backdrop and still have the colours come through? Perhaps you have already covered this on a video that I have yet to come across,. so my apologies if the tutorial already exists. my goal. is to shoot an "appletini" really just green food colouring as you have done with this shot but on a black backdrop with the ice cube splashing

Reflecting light in the back of your beverage is needed! You can get reflective cards from the art store and place them behind, cut out in the shape of your bottle!

YES! Exactly. I aim for 1/32 as the strongest power to still have a brief duration. So if going to 1/32 leaves me at f/11 ISO 640 1/200 that is OK vs increasing flash power and dropping ISO

Hiya! I often just use the widest zoom settings, all were set to 24mm here. I barely ever adjust the flash width now that I think about it, maybe I'll have to utilize that function... thanks!

It's good, I use 1/200 mainly as when you are using flash the exposure is ideally pure black before the flash is introduced. Cheers

You got it 1/200. So the frame was entirely black without flash.
Actually, the flash is your shutter speed.

Hello! I'm using YN560IV flashes for still life, but I'm still getting some motion blur. It's set to 1/128. How do I get rid of that?
Hello Devon, what is your ambient exposure with no-flash looking like -- pure black? The motion blur could be from ambient exposure blending w/ your flash, if the ambient exposure is not black prior to adding studio light. I use 1/200s ISO 100 f/8 as a starting point!
My apologies! I should have been more specific. I'm using a 6D with 100mm macro IS . I also use a soft box with the lowest power being 1/16. The settings I usually run are 1/125, f/8-f/13 ISO 100. I use two YNIV flashes at 1/128 but still manage to get motion blur.

That camera (a7m3) will serve you well, it is a lot better then the camera we use here. Go for it! A lot of this comes down to understanding light. Thanks for watching

I believe so! Godox makes great speedlights. Research the "flash duration".

Did u use high speed sync flashes to freeze the motion ?as camera limits to only 1/250 of seconds only
Very important question -- you DO NOT need HSS (High Speed Sync). When we shoot a frame at our max sync rate (1/250) the frame appears black. The freezing of the motion is only limited to the FLASH DURATION of your flash unit (lower power = briefer flash) -- your shutter speed doesn't effect the motion blur at all 1/250 will look the same as 1/100 as long as the frame is BLACK prior to introducing your artificial lighting. It sounds counter intuitive but everyone runs into this questions at some point along the journey. I hope this helps! (-:

you need to play with your flash power! It should be on a very low setting on your Speedlite! As Mister Workphlo said: low power = short flash duration. Also, you need to use the shutter speed that makes YOUR scene appear black without the flash, not some random shutter speed that somebody else used! Besides, if you wanted to use HSS you would most likely need to use the maximum shutter speed of 1/8000s to freeze the water like in the video and that means that you would need a Speedlite capable of HSS up to 1/8000s aswell as flash triggers with the same capability. Lastly your camera would have to be capable of shooting at that shutter speed. Low end bodies typically only go up to 1/4000s. Since you seem to already have a regular Speedlite setup why not try to go with that? I can assure you there is plenty of freezing power in a regular Speedlite at the LOWEST POWER setting! I'm sure you'll get it done ;)

no problem! And make sure to adjust the brightness of your exposure with the ISO setting and aperture if you notice that your exposure stays too dark due to the use of very low flash power. For reference: Mister Workphlo mentioned that he was on 1600 ISO in the video to be able to use an aperture that gives reasonable DOF...
Sadly you didn’t include any shutter speed setting info. You only discussed ISO and DOF. For something like this your shutter speed is extremely crucial. I would love to know what you were shooting at

Just a thought that yes he maybe using manual settings and you need that info. But he did say 1600 iso and f13. If you had that set on aperture priority wouldn't it set the shutter speed for the perfect exposure at those settings? Maybe? Not pro enough to know if that works
Adam Anderson most people doing work like this aren’t going to be using anything but manual settings ;) that’s all I’ve ever used because I like control and to know exactly what my shot will look like before I even have to look at my screen.
