I love the ever so slight smirk on Radcheck’s face when Rico stops him. It’s like he recognizes that Rico is starting to think for himself instead of blindly following the Federation.
It got a huge laugh out of the audience when I saw it at the cinema in 1997. I actually think it was the only laugh out loud moment in the whole movie.
Despite Zander's scummy attitude in the first half of the movie, he still has professionalism which is shown when he and Rico acted professionally towards each other despite having a physical fight before the failed invasion of Klendathu and Zander also showed remarkable courage by disembarking the "boat" to help the infantry fight the bugs and choosing to be the last person to board the "boat" despite outranking the surviving soldiers, including Johnny.
True, Xander is often underestimated, before he died he also did a heroic act, protecting Carmen's life over his by giving him the knife and that he could defend himself against what the brain bug would do to him first. He was conceited and pretentious, but he was brave, I even think it was him who took the initiative to rescue the soldiers, since, as you say, he is the one who goes out to cover them and is the last to board
@@dadab8547 "All is fair in love and War", Zander lived up to his espoused philosophy. When it came to love he chased it, When it came to War he embraced it and when it came to die he accepted his fate. Zander may have been a dick in Rico's eyes but he was competent and brave and went out like a boss. Spat on his enemy and told him more like him are coming to kill the fucking lot. G.
I like to think that, much like Rico and a few other characters, Zander had grown up quite a bit at this point. Seeing what took place on Klendathu and the horrors that the MI go through day to day changed a lot of them, including him. Remember the scene with the fisticuffs isn’t just a lot of these characters first time facing the Arachnids, but their first time in combat period. Kinda cool how even the “jerk” character has grown a little as a person.
Well, if you really think about it, he kinda had it coming. 1. Because he didn’t call and warn them that it was a trap. And yes, I do realize that he would’ve jeopardized himself by risking the rescue team thinking, “Well, last call was a distress call. How do we know this isn’t bullshit?”, but still 2. Is anyone really gonna respect or follow a general who just pusses out like he did? Also, it’s really a matter of, “Well, what are gonna do after the guy is splattered all over the place🤷♂️?”
Helldivers is arguably even heavier on the patriotic satire. Starship troopers was supposedly created to show the dangers of fascism, but after watching the film you just want to see the federation win against the bugs and slaughter those ugly things. I guess the federation’s propaganda videos were most effective bcuz theres no way people walk away from that movie thinking the humans are the bad guys.
@@zillobeast5257well that’s the whole point of the film isn’t it. It is after all satirical propaganda and feeling that way after seeing it highlights the commentary it conveys
Has anyone else noticed that most Paul Verhoeven movies age really well? Robocop, Total Recall, Starship Troopers… all still hold up really well. You can also notice the love they poured into the FX here, similar to Jurassic Park.
Yeah, they do. RoboCop, Total Recall, and Starship Troopers are some of my favorite movies. I also really liked Hollow Man as well. Paul Verhoeven made some awesome and memorable films when he was working and living in the U.S. So much so, that the RoboCop and Total Recall remakes paled in comparison to the originals and pretty much failed. Not hard to see why.
It's taken over 20 years for the effects to only just start looking ever so slightly dated. And yet I can see a film released now and laugh at how bad the visual effects have been done.
The effects look fantastic. The only thing dating these effects is that they used practical effects alongside cgi. Movies just do the full cgi or set piece cgi stuff
this was back when a summer block buster could be in production for 5 years, much of that time spent touching up the special effects. Now films are rushed into theaters, finished or not.
God, why everything looked legit. Uniform, guns, outpost structure and defenses. The CGI looks as good as nowadays CGI. Why they can’t return such good sci-fi action movies today 😢
Ah cmon don't take the thing to serious the 1 grenade at end was just for show. The gunfight before - no mini nukes no grenades where used on the bugs they just wasted all their ammo.Wasting bullets like that on crowded enemy is madness by any standard i hope they will remake the movie in future it really needs some overhaul on some parts.Found the movie when i was 11-12 y old when it came out nice but now it needs a overhaul ^^.
I just played back the head slice off at 2:30 at 1/4th speed, and it was so insanely well done. It wasn't even overly dramatic, just looked totally seem-less, and even the blood splatter nuance on the wall was a touch of brilliance.
I just noticed this, the first frame after the bug decapitates the head above the Jaw and you can see the chin strap fly off as well as well as the hands.
If you look closely during one of the shots, you can see one of the tower gunners reloading a heavy machine gun. The amount of thought and attention to detail that went into this scene is very impressive.
@@impguardwarhamer everybody knows that. But we poin that because in most movies never shows reloading when heavy weapon shoot. Like gatling gun in Predator movie.
It looks like there's 3 people up there at one point, two firing and one loading, but in the rest of the shots and when they retreat to the ships there's only 2 left. I wonder what's up with that, I guess the 3rd guy could have finished loading at some point and climbed down the ladder offscreen at some point.
@@jamesdulak3108 That would be my guess. The Tower gunners likely told their loader to get to the retrieval boat, and they waited until their ammo was fully expended before evac.
You can tell the art teams were given a lot of funding and had a passion to make this look as real as it gets. Both amazing practical and special effects blended for a perfect product as we get to see.
Saw this as a kid and I always remembered where they’ve wiped out probably hundreds of bugs and Radchake reloads and puts his rifle over the side to continue the fight and sees a literal OCEAN of gnashing teeth and claws and it’s this great moment of indescribable awe and disgust and he just grimly wipes his mouth. It’s such a cool scene
@@scotthartley518 they probably didn’t have any or there was a minimum safe distance to use them, plus I think the reason why they didn’t have air support was either because the birds didn’t have time to scramble or razek didn’t have the authority to call them in and the only person who did was out of it, or more likely because of the established rivalry between the navy and army he didn’t want to call for help

One of the best battle scenes ever to come to life. As a young teen this movie had such an impact on me when it comes to imagination. If u ask me the entire movie holds up beautifully to this day.
1. Its written for an ambush scene. Especially when they had carpet bombed the surface earlier. "Oh hey, it should be clear now." 2. Those peeps will have to carry those, which will pretty much kill their purpose for a "investigation and retrieval" mission, hence why they didn't carry any heavy stuff. 3. And like Pikka above said, where are their extra mags and stuff?! D:
I love that even though we're meant to hate Xander, he immediately comes back onscreen to take care of business and help the remaining troopers. Goes to show that the filmmakers were intentionally creating memorable characters, rather than stock ones.
One of the very few perfect movies ever. Fantastic characters, superb script, every character death is felt keenly, effects that are timeless. Nothing like it since.
Today's movie CGI looks really bad. Seriously, Transformers (2007) looks so much better than The Flash. The effects are evolving just backwards. Where's all that money going into? Getting the actor?
It’s 2020 and damn this film still is amazing. I need a AAA game from this series. Planet to Planet clear the bugs out. Base building. Survive till rescue arrives
Don't need a AAA game for this. They have a game out right now that's very close to being starship troopers. It's called EDF 5 or you can get EDF iron rain. Both are good and you kill hordes of big alien bugs. Sadly they are big ants, spiders, robots and flying saucers but still terrifying when you have to fight through hundreds of then at a time. It's on PC and PS4. If that's not good enough for ya then the people who made EDF should be the ones to make it. Them or the ones who make a game called Serious Sam.
Oh she had a way higher chance of survival - but it'd have been a miracle if she surivived. It stabbed her like 4-5 times in the torso, vital organs pierced by massive mandibles.
Both lungs were pierced, it's a miracle she held on as long as she did. Raszack on the other hand was only missing his legs, no idea why the fuck they offed him.
fun fact: the tower MGs are hybrids of 2 different guns, its a Browning M2 fitted with modified soviet DShK barrels, during the time of the movies production only the barrels were available and not the whole gun, so any DShk you see in any US movie that have them could be either the hybrids, mockups that look like them or real deals, some examples is the horrible mockup from the 1984 film red dawn which was a M60D with a long ass thin barrel, the 1998 film soldier which had hybrids mounted on the crawlers when they attack Arcadia 234 and Rambo 3 which had actual DShKs since it was filmed in israel, (they captured tons of them during the wars against the arabs), a rare sight in US films of that era but switched to a mockup when filming was moved to the US
I love how the creator for this movie actually hated the book, set out to make a satire of it and somehow still ended up creating a movie so badass it still holds up to this day! Heck, I honestly think it contributed to me joining the army! :)
It's not just a satire of the book, but also of militarism and fascism in general. But it was such a stealthy satire that it flew over most people's heads.
It's also the closest to a Warhammer 40,000 film we're ever going to get - unless Henry Cavill and Games Workshop actually manage to get their cinematic project off the ground, that is.
@@Ashalmawia well there’s theories that Event Horizon is actually a 40k prequel. The theory is that it was mankind’s first attempt at traveling through the warp
Is anyone surprised they waste so much ammo when the rifles don't have any iron sights. Also, you can see how dedicated the arachnids are to killing when one bug is getting hit to hell but limps forward to kill that one soldier at 4:58. Also, I don't really like Xander but the fact he came out of the dropship in armor and armed to give cover fire for the retreating troopers was cool to see.
I used to feel the same, about not liking Xander way back when, but Honestly, consider it from his point of view. Like Rico, he was captain of his Team, a top grade student, and a Hero who runs head long into the Enemy if it means he can save lives. Sure he’s a bit bull headed, and he’s taken a fancy to a hot lass, but then what Testosterone fueled Lad isn’t? He Enlisted into the Federal Service, became a Fleet Pilot and Instructor, and Co-Helmed Navy Capital Ships, and even to the end he was defiant in the face of certain death, giving his only weapon to Carmine. If we had followed Xander instead of Rico, he would be the star we would all rooting for. He is a Hero of the Federation.
He was conceited, pampered and a girlfriend stealer but no one can deny that he was a good soldier and comrade, it would make a lot of sense that he was the one who had the initiative of the rescue in the face of the call for help and he gave his life for Carmen by handing over the knife and staying completely vulnerable.
If you look at the big picture from all standpoints, Xander wanted the hot girl. She was with Rico. She decides to cheat on Rico for him if you go by the deleted scenes. Xander technically wasnt the bad guy for the most part. The only person terrible was actually Carmen for cheating. Other than that, everyone in the movie had great roles for their parts
Man, I loved this when I watched it at a friend's party! Swimming in the pool during the day, playing games, eating pizza, staying up late, playing games, watching movies, Perfect! swimming in the pool in the day. Being an adult, you have the freedom to do whatever you want, but it still does feel as as good as your childhood memories. Makes me feel nostalgic and I bit sad. 😥
That great moment when the CGI bug falls off the wall, and scatters the physical barrels is the kind of interaction between real and effect you don't see enough of these days.

This is classic 'Last Stand' territory & reminds us of every film that has gone before, like 'Zulu', or numerous cowboy films. Even falling back into the compound & the 'cavalry' suddenly arriving to save the day.
I think they didn't bring any heavy gears as they thought the area was clear. See first sequence of the clip. The grenade that was thrown at the last scene could very well be their only grenade.
At the battle of Klendathu, there was more than 100 thousand casualties, which means they must have deployed several armies for them to have suffered that kind of loss. An army can be expected to have several portable nuclear war heads at their disposal, but you can't expect every platoon to be equipped with them. Especially not if you are going in to inspect a friendly base, this was an ambush. They had no idea that bugs were even on the planet.
TheScienceofnature until one of them mutilated the platoon’s radioman, and as they say in the mobile infantry “where there’s one bug there’s a thousand bugs”
A) Never celebrate too early, it could kill you. B) Never take whatever foreign body has penetrated the body out, it more or less keeps the wound sealed, and it could kill you. C) Never be in a Starship Troopers movie, it could kill you.
You know, I'm starting to think Dizzy's death may have partly been Rico's fault. If she had any real hope of surviving her wounds (however unlikely that may have been), Rico dashed them when he pulled that bug's limb from her body. If something is impaled into your body, even if it hurts like hell, that's what's keeping you from bleeding out faster. Dizzy may not have survived either way, but Rico sure as hell sped it along.
Also his teacher Rasczak. I used to think he got cut in half but rewatching it he still had this thighs. A couple of tourniquets to tie off the bleeding and he would have been a double amputee but still alive. Instead Rico gives him a bullet to the chest.
Maybe due to infantry being disposable to the Federation, they aren't given any first aid training, only the medics are. Maybe they are just encouraged to mercy kill any injury they judge as life threatening.
@geckcgt7216 I'm not holding Rasczak against Rico. Applying tourniquets in the middle of a tactical retreat when the area is crawling with bugs is... impractical, to say the least. Secondly, he very clearly told him to put him out of his misery. Remember when he shot the trooper that was taken by the Hopper bug? "I expect any of you to do the same for me." He meant it.

Why is the CGI so damn good while very often Hollywoods big budget cgi looks like Scorpion Kings dump?
It all comes down to how much time the production team is given, good artists can't make masterpieces on a short schedule
The budget for Starship Troopers was bigger than Scorpion King
Also the use of perspective/angle based lighting on the rendered models help mask any discrepancy in the models overall final image. If you get someone who knows CGI for a living like the back of their hand, this is the result.

I like to think that, much like Rico and a few other characters, Zander had grown up quite a bit at this point. Seeing what took place on Klendathu and the horrors that the MI go through day to day changed a lot of them, including him. This was brought up in the director's commentary about how desensitized the soldiers were thanks to the Federation's fascism.
I'm surprised too
Well, if you really think about it, he kinda had it coming. 1. Because he didn’t call and warn them that it was a trap. And yes, I do realize that he would’ve jeopardized himself by risking the rescue team thinking, “Well, last call was a distress call. How do we know this isn’t bullshit?”, but still
2. Is anyone really gonna respect or follow a general who just pusses out like he did?
Also, it’s really a matter of, “Well, what are gonna do after the guy is splattered all over the place🤷♂️?”
Anybody else get serious Starship Troopers vibes from playing Helldivers 2?
FOR DEMOCRACY!!!!!!!
Helldivers is arguably even heavier on the patriotic satire. Starship troopers was supposedly created to show the dangers of fascism, but after watching the film you just want to see the federation win against the bugs and slaughter those ugly things. Paul Verhoeven made some awesome and memorable films when he was working and living in the U.S. So much so, that the RoboCop and Total Recall remakes paled in comparison to the originals and pretty much failed. Not hard to see why.
Eh, I'd say that the movie on its own is good, but a adaptation that missed the mark about Rico's journey from enlisted to officer
It's taken over 20 years for the effects to only just start looking ever so slightly dated. And yet I can see a film released now and laugh at how bad the visual effects have been done.
What makes it great is the blend. Its not all CGI and not all conventional props and camera work
The effects look fantastic. The only thing dating these effects is that they used practical effects alongside cgi. Movies just do the full cgi or set piece cgi stuff
