I would say it's pretty accurate, because the movie came out in 1961, so the dresses were fitted but contained the looser waistline that was popular in the 60s. She also had that fancy cigarette holder that could be seen used in the early 60s. Her hair though isn't accurate with the egirl style but was correct in that it predicted the 60s trend of the dark and light dyed hair (though i can be wrong but I see influences of Cruella style in style icon and Warhol superstar, Edie Sedgwick).
I may be wrong, but didn't Melanie Martinez sort of start that trend? On the Voice in 2012, she said that her hair was directly inspired by Cruella de Ville, so technically, Cruella de Ville was responsible in starting the trend.
Frollo is the scariest villain because he strongly believes that he isnt the villain and that what he is doing is good. The worst part is, there are really people like him in real life. He's also supposed to be a religious person who many people go to to ask for help and advice, yet he turned out to be biased amd hypocritical. Its realistic, which makes him all the more scary.
I guess the reason most of the costumes lack of embellishment or patterns is for the sake of animators. It would take so many more hours to animate a pinstripe suit or jewelry on a moving character
The reason why people enjoy Villians the most is because they are often the ones who push the story along via action. Main character often go along with the world and things just HAPPEN to them. Great stories are able to balance an interesting protagonist and interesting villain.
and then if you watch the stage musical where he returns to being an archdeacon, he is made even more complex and even more frightening. He really is the best villain because he is complex and realistic, and that is why he is so scary.

Its true that miceneic greeks didnt really make a lot of art of their gods, most of their sculptures were kuros or kores which were mostly generic depictions of men and women respectively, the men were always naked (this is the ideal beauty standard for greeks) as for the classical period, male gods were eventually also depicted as naked almost always so i think i speak for the majority when i say we deserve a hot naked hades
kouri and kores were mainly from the archaic period onwards though. the mycenean/minoan/cycladic civilizations (which all were considered prehistoric and are before the archaic period) didn't have big statues. but sure, if it was placed in classical period Athens, it would make a lot of sense.
@@Raphael3032 actually, phonetically it's pronounced 'kouri'. greek people tend to write in english as they write in greek. the word in greek is spelled κούροι, where the combination of o and ι make an ee sound. that's the only reason why it's sometimes written like that (and of course it's not pronounced kour-o-i). also kouri is plural, and kouros is singular.

@Armo Moose It’s not about whether or not it’s true, it’s about a feature that is associated with Ashkenazi Jews. I am Jewish and do not have this nose, but the conceptual idea of Jews having those physical features is extremely pervasive and this reinforces it while also framing them as ugly and evil.

People try to alienate us because of this stereotype bullshit (particularly non Greeks) when we are just as Greek. Plus most of these companies have Jewish employees. I can see why some might find that problematic, but the thing is there's no proof that they're Jews. Gothel was based on Cher, who isn't a Jew (she's Albanian, so is it now "Albanophobic"?). Also, these movies have Hebrew dubs, so clearly not every Jew thinks big noses on characters are a problem.

Wanted to say this on your princess series, but the reason characters had simple costumes with minimal to no prints and embellishments was because they would make the garments extremely difficult to animate at different angles and in motion. Especially by hand. Love your content btw.

One thing that is plausible is that Dr Facilier's design was heavily inspired by Baron Samedi, a sort of deity(?) associated with voodoo. His signature look is a tailcoat suit, top hat, cane, and skull themes (either a straight up skull head or skull patterned facepaint). His color scheme is also, you guessed it, black, white and purple.
Maybe a small fun fact: Disney allegedly was inspired by the statue of a woman in my hometown to create the face of the Evil Queen. The woman is called Uta von Naumburg. She, her husband and many others gave money to build a cathedral there. After the cathedral was finished, statues were built to honor this group of people. Uta's statue indeed has a cold look and, most famously, a high collar. Legend has it she was very unhappy in her marriage, therefore the artist wanted to portray her that way.
I'm gonna say that the reason Hook's shirt is pink is that he's bad at laundry and just threw in the white shirt with his red jacket and breeches. Always separate whites and reds children!
Re Dr Facilier, I think the lack of dress shirt baring midrif is queer coding (which disney loves lmao), whereas the standard shirt with no waistcoat wouldn't have that same othering effect
not 100% sure if it's queer coding. He's dressed almost exactly the same as Baron Samedi in Sugar Hill, which is a classic blaxploitation movie. Seems more likely they'd draw inspiration from that character
Fun fact from my art history professor, the evil queen from snow white is actually based on a statue in the Naumburg Cathedral depicting one of it's patrons, Uta von Ballenstedt. What's interesting about this is that the patrons were depicted in fashions that were modern to the time they were created, not really accurate to the time the patrons were alive, so the style we see on the statue is probably something she didn't actually wear in her lifetime.
I just wanted to point out that dr. Facilier is a voodoo doctor, so I think the little feature like the tooth necklace should also be looked at for accuracy. Such as traditional voodoo or black Magic accessories in New Orleans. New Orleans has a large African descent population and many practiced black magic so it is important to take that into account.
I think you're right! I wasn't paying too much attention because I know Hook is definitely not from the 1900s and the movie was released in 1953. But Return to Neverland (the sequel) takes place in 1940, which makes me think that Peter Pan is set in the 1910s (though if that's the case, Mrs. Darling could look a little more historically accurate ;D)

Medieval Art Historian here: The Evil Queen was most likely partially based on the donor portrait of Uta von Ballenstadt (c. 1000-1046) of the Naumburg Cathedral from the 13th century, and they do in fact contain many similarities in style!
I always have seen turn of the century cartoons as examples of antisemitic depictions, never have I been pointed at the obvious that Near Easter/Middle Eastern ethnic feature are still often chosen for villainous characters because ahhhh antisemitism. It’s so disappointing how society hasn’t evolved. People just went back to subliminal antisemitism

I love Frollo's song about wanting Esmeralda to be 'his and his alone'. It does such a great job at showing his hypocrisy, it shows us how he believes he has the moral high ground ('you know I'm so much purer than...'), but he is actually a dirtbag. It also makes him very much like real life 'villains' that hide behind religion. And I think it's the only scene in a Disney movie in which this form of sexism/misogyny is shown (including victim blaming: 'I'm not to blame, it is the gypsy girl') and properly depicted as evil.

@@finland4ever55 the point is not that these characters are intended to be Jewish, but they are given stereotypically Jewish features (and remember most of these stories are based on older stories when these tropes about Jews were likely even more widely accepted). The point is not that Disney openly establishes Jewish characters and calls them evil, it's that Disney's depiction of these characters subconsciously pushes the narrative that "Jewish" features are evil features. This does not only make people numb to depictions of antisemitism, but it negatively affects the self esteem of the children who see their features exaggerated/reflected only ever in villains. Tangled is one of my favorite movies, but it does somewhat perpetuate a myth of blood libel, whether intentional or not. As far as Vanellope from Wreck it Ralph, I do not understand why you keep bringing up a character from one recent movie to prove that all the other instances in unrelated movies are not antisemitic. That makes zero sense. Vanellope isn't even Jewish in the movies--she's a video game character voiced by a Jewish actress who awesomely declared that her character was Jewish after the movie came out. And of course disney dubs their movies-- they're a major business trying to make as much money as possible.
If I recall correctly, the Evil Queen from Snow White was meant to look medieval, to contrast with Snow White's early-modern get-up. So the Queen looks like someone distinctly out of step with the time, compared to the virtuous Snow White

a cool headcanon/in-universe explanation for Hook's costuming is that Peter Pan and The Lost Boys STOLE all of Hook's bling and, in paranoia, he took to wearing his fanciest regalia on a daily basis to prevent THEM being stolen too. The lilac shirt, similarly, could be passed off as a prank played on him, Peter staining the pirates' laundry with beetroot or mollusks, or simply an unfortunate relic of the pirates first attempts at laundering in Neverland (as opposed to hiring washerwomen at port). For The Evil Queen, her design reminds me of Mother Gothel: deliberate historic inaccuracy to evoke a sense of witches being much older than they appear. Prior to her being widowed, the Evil Queen likely conformed with contemporary fashions but discarded them during her coup.

Its true that miceneic greeks didnt really make a lot of art of their gods, most of their sculptures were kuros or kores which were mostly generic depictions of men and women respectively, the men were always naked (this is the ideal beauty standard for greeks) as for the classical period, male gods were eventually also depicted as naked almost always so i think i speak for the majority when i say we deserve a hot naked hades

@@Raphael3032 actually, phonetically it's pronounced 'kouri'. greek people tend to write in english as they write in greek. the word in greek is spelled κούροι, where the combination of o and ι make an ee sound. that's the only reason why it's sometimes written like that (and of course it's not pronounced kour-o-i). also kouri is plural, and kouros is singular.

@Armo Moose It’s not about whether or not it’s true, it’s about a feature that is associated with Ashkenazi Jews. I am Jewish and do not have this nose, but the conceptual idea of Jews having those physical features is extremely pervasive and this reinforces it while also framing them as ugly and evil.

Wanted to say this on your princess series, but the reason characters had simple costumes with minimal to no prints and embellishments was because they would make the garments extremely difficult to animate at different angles and in motion. Especially by hand. Love your content btw.

One thing that is plausible is that Dr Facilier's design was heavily inspired by Baron Samedi, a sort of deity(?) associated with voodoo. His signature look is a tailcoat suit, top hat, cane, and skull themes (either a straight up skull head or skull patterned facepaint). His color scheme is also, you guessed it, black, white and purple.

Maybe a small fun fact: Disney allegedly was inspired by the statue of a woman in my hometown to create the face of the Evil Queen. The woman is called Uta von Naumburg. She, her husband and many others gave money to build a cathedral there. After the cathedral was finished, statues were built to honor this group of people. Uta's statue indeed has a cold look and, most famously, a high collar. Legend has it she was very unhappy in her marriage, therefore the artist wanted to portray her that way.

Fun fact from my art history professor, the evil queen from snow white is actually based on a statue in the Naumburg Cathedral depicting one of it's patrons, Uta von Ballenstedt. What's interesting about this is that the patrons were depicted in fashions that were modern to the time they were created, not really accurate to the time the patrons were alive, so the style we see on the statue is probably something she didn't actually wear in her lifetime.
I just wanted to point out that dr. Facilier is a voodoo doctor, so I think the little feature like the tooth necklace should also be looked at for accuracy. Such as traditional voodoo or black Magic accessories in New Orleans. New Orleans has a large African descent population and many practiced black magic so it is important to take that into account.

I think you're right! I wasn't paying too much attention because I know Hook is definitely not from the 1900s and the movie was released in 1953. But Return to Neverland (the sequel) takes place in 1940, which makes me think that Peter Pan is set in the 1910s (though if that's the case, Mrs. Darling could look a little more historically accurate ;D)

I love Frollo's song about wanting Esmeralda to be 'his and his alone'. It does such a great job at showing his hypocrisy, it shows us how he believes he has the moral high ground ('you know I'm so much purer than...'), but he is actually a dirtbag. It also makes him very much like real life 'villains' that hide behind religion. And I think it's the only scene in a Disney movie in which this form of sexism/misogyny is shown (including victim blaming: 'I'm not to blame, it is the gypsy girl') and properly depicted as evil.

Disney should make more princesses wearing black, red, brown, navy blue since all princesses are wearing bright saturated gowns and leave the darker colors for the villains it would be interesting and refreshing to see how the color of your wardrobe doesn't necessarily reflect your personality as for a princess can wear black and still be joyful and happy

The thing with Gothel though is she might look like a Jew but she was physically based on Albanian-American singer Cher, and Disney has heroic Jews like Vanellope from Wreck it Ralph and like all Disney movies Tangled has a Hebrew dub.
@@finland4ever55 the point is not that these characters are intended to be Jewish, but they are given stereotypically Jewish features (and remember most of these stories are based on older stories when these tropes about Jews were likely even more widely accepted). The point is not that Disney openly establishes Jewish characters and calls them evil, it's that Disney's depiction of these characters subconsciously pushes the narrative that "Jewish" features are evil features. This does not only make people numb to depictions of antisemitism, but it negatively affects the self esteem of the children who see their features exaggerated/reflected only ever in villains. Tangled is one of my favorite movies, but it does somewhat perpetuate a myth of blood libel, whether intentional or not. As far as Vanellope from Wreck it Ralph, I do not understand why you keep bringing up a character from one recent movie to prove that all the other instances in unrelated movies are not antisemitic. That makes zero sense. Vanellope isn't even Jewish in the movies--she's a video game character voiced by a Jewish actress who awesomely declared that her character was Jewish after the movie came out. And of course disney dubs their movies-- they're a major business trying to make as much money as possible.

If I recall correctly, the Evil Queen from Snow White was meant to look medieval, to contrast with Snow White's early-modern get-up. So the Queen looks like someone distinctly out of step with the time, compared to the virtuous Snow White

a cool headcanon/in-universe explanation for Hook's costuming is that Peter Pan and The Lost Boys STOLE all of Hook's bling and, in paranoia, he took to wearing his fanciest regalia on a daily basis to prevent THEM being stolen too.
The lilac shirt, similarly, could be passed off as a prank played on him, Peter staining the pirates' laundry with beetroot or mollusks, or simply an unfortunate relic of the pirates first attempts at laundering in Neverland (as opposed to hiring washerwomen at port).
For The Evil Queen, her design reminds me of Mother Gothel: deliberate historic inaccuracy to evoke a sense of witches being much older than they appear. Prior to her being widowed, the Evil Queen likely conformed with contemporary fashions but discarded them during her coup.
I always thought Frollo was some sort of priest as a kid, I didn’t realize he wasn’t until you said it, tbh tho I didn’t really like that movie because Frollo scared me haha
