Really appreciate you taking the time to make this video, really breaking everything down and going over all the details of what to expect. Hard to be certain on picking a possible career when reading a job description that already seems broad on top of not knowing exactly what everything means. Amazing video and way more informative than anything else I’ve been able to find so far.
Thanks man!!! It’s been difficult finding info on this rate!!! I leave in 2 weeks to RTC and I plan on going officer after my first contract and flying!
I love the jump fail with the mario sound. Great breakdown. Sh60b, mh60r, and mq8b crewman. You were definitely one of my instructors with herman, cortez, rogers
I flew the very 1st flight of a ROMEO while stationed with DCMA Owego NY @ Lockheed Martin. if was YSH-60R 166977. and got the 1st ROMEO NEC along with the other AWCS Here. we also had some of the 1st SIERRAs come through here and basically qual'd ourselves since there was no other way and got that NEC too. fun times. AWCS(AW) Ret. I now work for Sikorsky Engineering
Well in my day you went to aircrew candidate school first and if you swam very well you were put on the "SAR" hit list. So when it was time to choose orders out of a school the people on the list had to choose Helos and go to rescue swimmer School. The flip side of that was if you swam poorly you might get dropped from the aw rate
Hey Darien. My name is John and I’m a few weeks away from going to MEPS. I’m choosing AWS/AWR as my rating. I was curious if you had some time to break down the pipeline out of boot all the way to my first command, wherever that may be. All of your videos on this subject have been highly useful in assisting my rating decision. So, thank you for all the info you’ve provided so far and I look forward to learning more if you can make the time to do so. 9:54
When I was aircrew it wasn’t its own rate. You did have to come from one of the Aviation Maintenance rates to be Aircrew. At the time AW we’re in electronic warfare like in the back of a P3.
I was interested in rescue swimmer but I’m too old according to the navy website. So I’m considering AWF it’s between that or CTI if I even qualify for it

I want to become a CTI. I got a very very high ASVAB and I’m fluent in Mandarin. However I was denied a TS due to having had contact within the last 24 months with Chinese nationals. I want to join the Navy and do another rate while I wait 24 months to be eligible for TS again. Was hoping to be able to do AWS but if they’re requiring TS now for these rates, that means I’ll have to do something else. Super frustrating all the cool jobs I want require TS.
@@PhDarien Thanks for the quick reply. I’ll maybe go HM for 2 years before CTI transfer package, or try for HM-ATF SARC for 5 years then CTI for another 6 year - but I’m guessing SARC requires TS too
Great Video Darien. I was an Aviation Ordnancemen 06-13. Killer video brother and keep it up. Speaking on the Navy SAR Swimmers. We only use them for shipboard uses as you said. They will do some help stuff for training but their primary role is via RHIB boats for rescues. Sometimes when we have a man overboard we can get a RHIB into the water faster than the alert 30 Helo spun up. Doesn't mean the Alert 30 isn't doing up still but, the RHIB is sometimes able to get into the water fast and a SAR swimmer will have a separate job such as a cook. Or in our case we had 3 Ordnancemen that were SAR qualified which is how I can speak to this info.
Thanks. I worked with lots of surface swimmers during my time. They’re a good group of people. Our alert aircraft always had some maintenance issues that grounded us. I plan on shed more light on this job.
@@PhDarien Ahh well damn.. Sadly, motorcycle accidents. Both were at Norfolk squadrons. I was at the dragonwales squadron about a year ago and saw someone wearing a Lovelace patch, buschliglt logo and letters in his name . Thought that was cool. We were both from south Florida. You’re gonna go to bootcamp, and then stationed in Pensacola FL for probably a year, not that the training takes that long but u do a lot of waiting around there so just make sure you are training your ass off until u get to rescue swimmer school. You’ll get into pre-load once u get classed up. Where ur gonna be at the school house working out, cleaning and standing watches. You’ll get classed up to prep and be in prep for 2-6 weeks depending on how well u do and how many people there are classing up at a time. After prep 6 weeks of RSS, 5 weeks of aircrew school and then you’ll go to A school for 6-13 weeks depending on if u get AWR or AWS. After that you’ll either go straight to SERE or go to Jacksonville FL or San Diego CA to the rag (FRS) for 6-7 months to start flying. Once u qual up you’ll get to ur first duty station.
Excellent and accurate description, definitely going to share this link to my new aspiring applicants! ✊🏾
