instead of making games to be fun, they started making games to make money. probably the main reason new and recent mmorpgs are terrible.

I played New World recently and I'm enjoying it a lot. The major hurdle I've come to is Discord. You join a company (guild) and nobody types in chat. It's so quiet you can hear a pin drop. When I asked several times in companies im told everyone's on discord. Why do I have to join a third party voice chat program when there's no raiding or large pvp going on? The game has voice and text chat in many different channels already... so now I have to get on discord too? That's a big issue. Maybe I don't want my personal social media presence in your guilds discord? It's not moderated like the games are and believe me it can sometimes be like the Wild West. Not comfortable.

Imo the true issue with mmos like WoW and FFXIV are the internet. 20 years ago during the days of Vanilla WoW, Star Wars Galaxies, OSRS etc etc. There were very few places to talk about builds and game mechanics, but now with guides being out left and right for every single little game feature it has now taken the adventure out of video games. Now that I think about it, same thing applies for single player games….

When I was in pursuing my Computer Science undergrad degree from Purdue, a professor said something that has held true my entire life. "People with a passion for what they're creating will create an awesome product. Once that product becomes popular enough that people with business degrees catch wind of it, they will come and absolutely decimate anything that was good about it." The people with business degrees have destroyed the MMO genre, and they're in the process of killing the gaming industry as a whole.

It's convenient to blame the business people, just like it's convenient to blame politicians for non-game problems in society, but it isn't why MMO genre has problems.
Business people didn't force Blizzard to sketch out ideas for TBC on a napkin that included flying mounts.

MMO players waiting for the next new MMO usually waiting by playing gacha or playing some type of RPG. Which gives instant gratification mostly. Then when the MMO comes out, it feels boring compared to the previous game they were playing.

  • @PenguinDust1969
    @PenguinDust1969 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

MMO's were replaced by open world gachas. MMO's are expensive to maintain. The best of them require a monthly subscription and the worst of them have a constant barrage of monetization popups. Now, the new gachas don't offer the MM, but MMO's were moving away from that game element except for endgame anyway. Leveling up became a solo effort in MMO's. Players would only gather for instances and raids. MMO's and open world gachas aren't a one-to-one trade, but it's where the market went. It's where the money currently is.

There are some more recent ones that are doing pretty well. GW2, ESO, OSRS (not that recent and a re-release, but hey), Lost Ark, Throne and Liberty (this will likely change tbf), and New World. Most of these games (cept OSRS) are not hitting BIG numbers outside when they came out, but they are all well populated and receiving plenty of content so I would consider them alive personally. This video kind of reads as "I don't play this game so it must be dead"
There are some good points in this video however, alot of potential MMO players are playing games that don't require as much time to play.

I disagree with the sentiment mmos are dying even tho i play mostly ragnarok to this day, at the same time i do agree about the copycat aspect to an extent.
It all comes down to the players demography. Young boys will not play anything that build up as slow as mmos, even when modern mmos already have super fast progression. Way easier to find people around 30+ in an mmo than younger people, i would also add racing games (mostly simulators) and fighting games on this list.
Funny enough, the fighting game community is suffering from the same MMOs do, since it also take A LOT of time to just start not being trash at the game. Getting beaten with no tomorrow is the usual learning process in these games, and younger people doesn't seem to want to deal with it, so games with team play can minimize the loss and they can grow better without this pressure those games naturally give.

I've been playing: "New world: aeturnum" for a few weeks and it's pretty fun. Needs a bit more content, but it has a good base.
Only issue is when high level guys get super confident and run past all the enemies to get to a boss just to kill it, which is super annoying.
However, when they try to do the same thing in a max level dungeon, suddenly they realise if you run ahead and don't kill the enemies they get punished by dying, either by the enemies or dungeon boss. I love seeing the realisation unfold that they actually have to stick with the party and work as a team to progress.
It's fun to explore, gather resources and sometimes during the grinding get the rare item to make your armor nice and strong to fight bigger event bosses.

    • @gampie13
      @gampie13 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

this one is HIGHLY dependant on the game and setting/environment. There are multiple games, where this exact strategy actually IS the fastest way to do the dungeon.
Take throne and liberty Halloween dungeon as an example.
The time it takes to run the dungeon, by killing all the mobs vs just running past them, is night and day. killing all the mobs, generally cost you between 10-20min per run.
And ppl are already tiered of running the dungeon, but the rewards are good. So you end up with the basic human pattern, shortest path of most convenience.
      aka path of least resistance.
You do a random run, and you hate how slow it goes, and how long the dungeon takes. Then you do a premade with ppl that know how to speed run it, and you can do at least 2x the amount in the same timeframe. TIME is one of the highest factors of "high level/speedruning tactics" for dungeons and the like in ALL multiplayer games.
And whenever it happens, it's almost never relay a player problem, but a design problem from the game developers side.
It is also the same as why a "metagame" evolves in ALL multiplayer games, and even single player games, efficiency, timesaving and the path of least resistance. It's basic human psychology at play, that the developers of the game failed to take in to account when designing the game/content

    • @resphantom
      @resphantom หลายเดือนก่อน

@@gampie13 The worst was when each player kept dying over and over, they also ignored reviving the other players or healing. The first half of each high level dungeon run ends up being way longer just because people kept rushing and dying.
Eventually during the second half we end up blitsing through the dungeon when we all work together, but it's super annoying to see people overestimating their ability and gear.
The length of an entire proper run could be done twice over for the amount of time we did it once.
I understand the strategy for lower level dungeons, but respect the level of difficulty

    Is poe considered mmoarpg?
There are no dedicated 3 men 6men dungeons and raids in poe, but you can still team up with anyone to do every activity togther, it also has one of the most reliable (not the best) in game trading and every one depends on every one to get what they want through trading be it an item or currency.
It also has the most sophisticated character progression skill tree, and there are almost infinite way of developing your own character and the way you play the game.
The genre is still thriving imo, its the developers and the people runnning the company that put themselves in a position that garner them the worst reputions possible, which inturn destroy the image and expectations of the genre even more.
We need more devs like GGG.

I think the genre is dying because the original premise of the genre has been lost. Why play WOW which focuses entirely on instanced PVE when you can play Destiny 2 or other games that have multiplayer PVE gameplay?
The appeal of MMORPGs was that they were online roleplaying games, like D&D, but instead of having to organize a group of a handful of players and have one player act as a dungeon master, you can instead log in at any time and share that world with thousands of players with a server acting as your dungeon master.
But now most MMORPGs have lost that, instead they focus on seasonal design, systems to keep players engaged to keep their metrics up. Instead of making a game players want to log in because its fun and the community makes the game dynamic, modern MMO developers focus on static worlds with daily quests, daily rewards, weekly lockouts, ect, turning their games into chores that are so demanding they're borderline second jobs. And most players just don't want that.

the main thing with nostalgia "of slow game back in the day", all comes down to how bad at the game you where, and how little information of the game you had at the time.
slow gameplay, in ALL games, are related to lack of knowledge in 99% of all instances. It is why "metagame" evolves in all games, even single player games. It's due to efficiency, and the basic human psychology, of taking the path of least resistance

mmos arent dying, osrs is growing, the issue is the people who went to college for game development are out of touch with the market.
Dragon Age flop, etc. Started programming, modeling and animating last year and now i'm confused at why we havent seen any good games when everything is so easy and learnable.
Then you see posts on social media talking about how most professional game devs only write 1-2 lines of code a week or month.
Timothy Cain also talked about this, how now game dev is more like a JOB that you apply for instead of a passion you seek out and go ham at.
College did this. He also talks about how lazy game devs are these days as apposed to his fallout days. Taking months to create 1 script, when he can do the same before lunch time.
Its credentials and obligation vs experience and passion.
Lots of game devs go to school because they want to make their own game, then they end up working full time and having no time at all to make games, or no energy from lack of working out + bad diet from not cooking meals.
Giving gaming the illusion that its a prestigious field in 2024 ruined videogames, colleges did this for money.
I think in a year or two the wave of Gen Z devs will get fed up with their jobs and start smaller indie studios en mass.
So we're about to see another massive wave of good games 100%. There was never any reason to staff 200 people to create any video game.

speed in ALL fields of all of humanity, relates to knowledge, the more you know something, not matter the field, the faster you can do something.
the old nostalgia of "slow game" relates to how little information you had of the game in relation to what you have of a game in todays world.
We are in the information age, there is no putting the genie back in the bottle

    • @meinne6492

i dont consider knowledge & the speed of acquiring it- a biggest factor, but rather- a "double edged tool" - still dependent/reliant on the person who has that "tool/s".
i.e plant : no matter how you take care of it, if the fruit it bears is toxic, rotten and poisonous - it always bear likewise. Just how a person's character- behind the in-game character - is - regardless of external factors like 'tools'.
no matter if you're a genius or a geek - if you're a shtty person behind the wheels - u will eventually fart it out or expose the smell out. Just like how the scam guilds in TNL initially started as homey / organized - structured, & very appealing rules & what nots - only to fart the smell out when a guild member had a 100k-worth Lucent drop in the guild storage.
