    I think TNH took the boy's question seriously. He gave it some thought, then answered. The boy asked a follow up. TNH thought and then answered. He was not mocking the boy. When he turned to the bhikkuni (nun) and said 'that's a good question' he was being sincere.
    If you watch the documentary Walk With Me (about TNH/Plum Village), at one point a child asks TNH about their dog who died. Many of the adults laugh in the audience (which I did not like, frankly), but TNH stays deadly serious and answers the question with as much thought and sincerity as if an adult asked. He doesn't patronise or belittle children.
    As for moving onto the next question, I don't see the big deal. He answered, there is a cue. He's a zen master after all, maintaining order and discipline is important.

      I think they laugh because the kids asks questions that seem too simple to ask ... but many of us wonder. They are innocent questions, and yet profound in a way. Adults feel the need to be precise and over-think their approach with questions to the Teacher .. but the children ask with a freedom and looseness that it does seem to tickle a bit :) In a nice way :)

    • @23Bentley45
      @23Bentley45 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You are so right. I remember as a child disliking deeply every time adults laughed about something I said in total seriousness.

  • @lordbyron3603

    A child asking “how are you” has a lot of sincerity and seriousness in it. Not the (hey, how are you) that adults ask in passing and loosely without being serious when they meet. I wonder why that is? I’ve made it a requirement whenever I get together with a friend to ask him sincerely and honestly how he is. And he opens up like a flower. It’s wonderful to hear him respond. I need to do that more with others.

    WOOOOOW This was amazing, you could tell that he applied exactly the principle that he describes in his book, the story about the guy who asked the Buda if the self existed and the Buddha remained silent. He didn't tell that the self doesn't exist because that would have caused pain and confusion.
    We can see this question is exactly the same one, and he woul have given a Buddhist monk a very different answer.

    People should understand how zen master’s mind operates. Most of true masters, they reply really short and quick. Because they want to implant the thought/idea, some sort like a “hook” in the beginning of every essays, in your deep consciousness. So that you could take it home with you and bring it up when you meditate and process that answer. Then there you will find the true answer behind it. FYI, Easterners mind work a bit different from westerners minds. We more like speak less but the meaning behind is more, contrast to westerners like to be plainly and clearly. It’s just different cultures tbh. No one is wrong or right.

    It's almost like they are mocking the little kid. There's no need to laugh so much. Just let the kid try to understand. You can sense that ego and judgement is still there. Look at the way the 'translator' repeats the kids question to thích nhất hắn. It's almost like she is laughing at the boy. Is ego still there? Is the boys question seemingly ridiculous? Why do you laugh? Ego is still there. These are not true practitioners. Belittling people. Now the boy feel foolish. Why do you make the boy feel foolish. Why do you laugh? Ego.. Ego is there. You have not reached enlightenment if you are condescending and laughing at a child's question.

      If you’ve ever watched many videos of his interactions with an audience, they respond to his subtle facial expressions. If he cracks the lightest of smiles, the audience usually laughs. They were laughing because the Zen master was blown away by the child’s question. Nobody was putting the child down, and at the end the little boy smiled when Thay said that that was a good question.

    I notice this a lot. Many people attending these talks laugh at basically everything. They're so giddy on life it seems, that they've forgotten what respect is. This is a young child, there is no need for such laughter at his question which could make him feel like he said something silly and make him feel insecure and inadequate. These environments are meant to be safe environments for everyone. This trend of obnoxious laughter has to stop!

    • @christiangasior4244
      @christiangasior4244 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t think it was meant to be belittling. I think they just laugh because the question was so simple and well answered, but I’m not sure. I think it’s just super customary for westerners to laugh a lot. I would prefer if they took it seriously as well but I think it serves several functions that may or may not be necessary like easing tension or awkwardness? Yeah I dunno.
