    My daughter was big on this tax the rich because of brain washing at school. She just assumed to be in the top 10% you had to be making $10 million a year. My wife and I gave her a good wake up. We asked what should these top 10% pay in tax and she said 15%. We pulled up the IRS website and found all the charts and showed her the break out of how much the top, 5%, 10%, 25% and the bottom 50% personal taxes paid to the treasury. Then we ask her do you think we should have lower taxes because we both work hard and make lots of sacrifices. She was like ya you guy are just middle class. Then we broke out our tax return to show her we were in the top 5% and how much we paid. She was red pilled when she saw we pay 35% in federal taxes.

Most small business owners taxes that they pay are tied to how their accountant handles their taxes. My stepdad owned his own business before he retired and he paid a MINIMUM of 35% in taxes, on the entire company income. We also live in TN where there is no state income tax. • @medioxcore
    @medioxcore 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    1. You're setting the scenario as a straight percentage, which takes advantage of people's misunderstanding of how tax brackets work. Nobody is having their entire income taxed at 30% (37% is actually the top rate). The first ~10k is taxed at 10%, then 10k-40k is taxed at 12%, and this continues to increase as you cross bracket thresholds. The only income that's taxed at 37% is income over $523,600. So if you make $523,601, only that extra dollar is taxed at 37%. The chunk below that is taxed at 35%. The chunk below that, 32%, and so on.
    2. Yes, the wealthy pay more than the poor, but that's because they can afford to. It's a lot harder to give up 10% of your income when you're making less than 1k/month than it is to give up "30%" of 50k/month. Or "37%". Even "50%" would leave you with $25,000 of spending money per month. That's more money per month than a lot of people make in a year.
    3. The low end rich aren't the problem. It's the ultra wealthy that are fucking this country.

    The problem is the tax loopholes and effective tax rate that some people end up paying. I definitely lean right on economic issues - but the whole “borrowing against assets” so you don’t have to pay taxes is a bit scummy to me. Same goes for the capital gains loopholes that exist - AND I’m not sure how to solve that problem without suffocating growth. Mitt Romney paid less than 14% on $22 Million in 2010 - that’s crazy to me.
    I don’t have the answers, and the answer certainly isn’t simply “raise the nominal tax rate on high income earners”, but there are absolutely concerning things going on within our tax code.

    • @reformcongress
      @reformcongress 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What capital gains loopholes are you referring to? They do have to pay the taxes on capital gains when and if they realize the capital gains. For example, if a company starts small and over time invests $10 million in the business, including the assets, and then sells it for $20,000,000 they pay taxes on the difference which is $10,000,000. It is capital gains taxes, not ordinary taxes and he paid a higher than most other people in the country as an effective rate. It's the same rate you will end up paying on any investments you make once you sell what you invested in at retirement, except for 401K plans which are taxed at ordinary rates since it is a tax deferred plan unless you go with a Roth 401K, which you would pay no taxes on at all. The average household in the United States has an effective tax rate below 10%, and CNBC estimated that 57% of the people in the country paid a net zero federal income tax in 2021.

      @@Bobo-jy5mg The top 1% holds 32.1% of wealth in America (not your figure of "about half" at all, actually under 1/3 even), and pays 40% of all taxes in America. Quite the opposite reality of what you are trying to portray.
      You're saying that they own about half the wealth when in reality it's actually less than 1/3, and then saying they pay less than half of all takes when in reality it's actually 40%... Are you seeing the problem here? You can't just round anything to be "about half" or "less than half" just to fit your narrative.
      You gotta stop buying into this anti-capitalist propaganda. I say that because I can tell that is where you are getting those ideas from. No rational person would look at a number like 32% and say "about half" and in the same breath say 40% is "less than half." Those terms are carefully used together to twist the reality of the matter to portray a false reality.

      No such thing as a loophole. Loophole implies getting around laws. By definition, they are using established laws, therefor not a loophole. That’s like saying a carpool lane is a loophole. Is it? If I have 2 people, and am I using a loophole in order to use the left lane? No. I’m using the established law. Just as the rich do.

    Wow! This is my alma mater! I only recognized it at 1:45 when that girl was speaking (although her schoolgirl uniform threw me off). It was the construction fence on the left and that long walkway that let it click in my head. I've walked up and down that pathway so many times. That being said, that construction fence has been up for 10 years now and counting.
    For people in the comments who are saying that the kids here are so dumb, I can attest that the intro-level political science "professors" have made them this way. There is/was a prof there who spewed vile anti-freedom lefty garbage back when I was a student. That guy was an old, mean, angry, and absolutely miserable individual. He came in every single lecture day and yelled and screamed at the class.
    The people were seemingly smarter and had more common sense back then compared to the kids in this video, but kudos to them for realizing that they've been getting liberal talking points all along about taxes! Some even said that the rich should pay less now! As that one kid said it, if he was that rich, he would not want his taxes raised, especially after hearing how much they pay.

    Aren't these people already considered rich themselves? Although they're not taxpayers yet because they're students. I mean most of them look like they live comfortably in middle class despite being in college. If they have a roof over their head, have clean source of water, can afford to eat 2-3 meals a day with extra snacks, can buy variety of clothes and make up or grab a cup of coffee from starbucks everytime they go out then they're pretty much considered rich/privileged from the eyes of someone who lives in a third world country.

    the rich pay slightly more in taxes, the very rich pay substantially less, and if even a small portion of the money that went to the extremely rich instead was shared equally among all workers (like if you're on $200k right now, you're actually worth over $900k to your company and they would still be massively profitable if they paid you $450k) they'd still have more money than they could spend.
    one of the cons is only talking about income tax, because they know full well that most tax is not income tax, and the extremely rich earn very little "income".

      Very true. I know more than a hundred corporate executives that either defer most of their salary, get paid outside the US borders into sheltered accounts, have their funds given as a tax dodge to various causes like Democrat candidates, College alma maters, Home country causes.. Greenpeace, WWF etc.
      One of them in particular has a total yearly compensation around 35M.. But her Husband is more wealthy still.. So she funds a women’s hospital in Bangladesh with most of her compensation and only “makes” 3M in actual income, tax wise.

    I admire the work you guys do by challenging what these kids have been told. Politicians and media do a good job of clouding facts and pushing a narrative. I would also be curious if these students believe that raising taxes on the rich will improve their lives. The government isn't suggesting that raising the taxes on the rich will lower the tax burden on the middle class. No one seems to question what the increased tax revenue will fund. I would like someone to share with these kids what idiotic things that our tax dollars fund. I wonder if these were faced with that information, if they would be more concerned with how our taxes are spent.

    Part of the govt's desire to foster division. The rich pay what they have too, no more, like the rest of us. when you hear about a year they pay little or no taxes, there is usually a legal reason. That said, the federal and local purse is greatly increased by rich individuals that every community hope to have. They are a golden goose worth having.
