I am generation x. That means that I grew up with something in the first cable offering of channels called "z channel." It was through this channel that showed things from popular movies to art house classics that I saw what is now one of the most endearing children's films out there. So for obvious reasons as well as the brilliance of the actor, I prefer Gene Wilder, but still respect the great works of the other two bringing Willy Wonka to their generation of children.
I was born in Dec. of 1970 and grew up watching the original with Gene Wilder. While Mr. Depp's version is more faithful to the book in terms of events I still like Mr. Wilder's version best.
I haven't seen the new one yet, but of the original and the one with Depp, I have to pick Gene Wilder. Depp did okay in the role, but Gene Wilder's performance will always be the best, at least in my opinion.

Gene Wilder will always be my favorite Willy Wonka of all time, I was probably 5 or 6 years old when my parents first showed me Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory for the first time. I’ve LOVED it ever sense!!!
I was 14 when the Gene Wilder version came out. My elder brother saw it & remarked how cool it was. I never saw the Johnny Depp version of Wonka. I'm in my mid 60's now, and finally saw the Wilder version for the first time in Nov. 2023. This latest version with Timothy Chalamet resonates well with me due to its nuances, kudos, and references to the Wilder version, finding it to be just as whimsically delightful as well. This newest installment of Wonka with Chalamet and Hugh Grant is worth seeing again!
First time I saw Willy Wonka was in 3rd grade. Watched it in school. But I remember seeing all of those commercials of him with those old real-world candies of Runts, Nerds, Sweet/Shock Tarts, Laffy Taffy, etc. voiced by Maurice LaMarche.
The first time I heard of Wonka was during the 2000s when they were a legit candy brand and I saw their commercials with a cartoon version of Willy. I never knew it was a movie till I watched the Gene Wilder film at my aunt's house during a Christmas eve party. Slowly throughout the years, I became a Wonka fan, seeing both the Wilder and Depp films. I even read the original novel for a project in middle school. So, even though it's not that accurate to the book, my fav has to be Gene Wilder. Mostly because of his amazing monologue of "You lose! Good day, sir!" and the ending in the Wonkavater
Personally, I like the first two but i absolutely LOVE this new version! Tim Chalamet nailed the role. But also, from here on, I can't help the image of Paul Atreides singing about chocolate while standing on a massive sand worm that keeps popping into my mind. LOL!
I’ve seen Wonka seven times before it left theaters it make me genuinely happy when was the last time you felt genuinely happy like nothing can touch you this is my comfort movie I cried like crazy I love it so much it’s a love letter to Gene Wilder at least in my opinion I can’t wait to own it
I'm old enough to have seen Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in theaters when I was 12 years old. I like Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka much better than Johnny Depp's. But I have to say that Timothée Chalamet was wonderful in "Wonka." I didn't go to the movie with high expectations, after the disappointment of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" but I really enjoyed it!
I agree! I always loved Gene Wilder's performance, and yet Timothee Chalamet captured that raw excitement and even brought a much-needed tenderness to the role without being too weird. To me, Wilder will always be Wonka, but I see Wilder's character in the much younger version of Chalamet and understand him better. i.e., His relationship with his mother. It makes for a poignant moment when he sings the famous "Imagination" song. It's tugging at my memories of Wilder. :)
Gene Wi”Dee for sure. It may not have been a big hit when it came out, but my brother, myself, and a bunch of our friends watched 3 times in a row when it debuted at the Claremont theater in San Diego. But to this day I’m annoyed that Grandpa Joe couldn’t get out of bed to help his family, but jumped up and danced to get to go to a chocolate factory.
NFL football is very important. NBC did not want a repeat of the Heidi game in 1968. This was a great video. I knew nothing about the movie and I got all the facts. It was fantastic.

Great report on the Wonka Theatrical Legacy. Gene Wilder will always be my Wonka. Although Timothy did a great job if not for the somewhat consistently predictable story. I remember seeing Gene on the big screen in 1971 in wonderment!
I remember seeing another behind the scenes and making of Willy Wonka, saw how they made the Wonka Teeny, (boat) where they had it on very high stilts with a screen on the side of it and how they did MikeTV's scene of being small and the dance scene between Charlie and Grampa, but cant find it ANYWHERE.
I was a little kid when the first one came out. My grandparents took me into NYC to see it. I still remember being amazed by the candy room and chocolate river...I mean what kid wasn't? The original will always be my favorite. It is also my kids' favorite. Hated the Johnny Depp version. Felt about it the same way Gene Wilder did. I thought the prequel in 2023 was fantastic and Timothee was fabulous, quirky and perfect for the part. He did Wonka proud.
All the Willy Wonka actors are great, and it is really hard for me to pick. In my opinion, Johnny Depp captured the Willy Wonka I imagined when I read the book. Gene Wilder was amazing and used to be my favorite. All 3 of them are awesome, but Johnny Depp is my personal favorite!
In my humble opinion. The best Willy Wonka movie is the 2023 with Timothy Chalomet. Is not a re-make, this Willy Wonka has a lot of charm and all the dark sides needed and greedy, where put in the chocolate cartel. I think Wonka movie is a complete success and the best of all 3 with Timothy Chalomete as the best Willy Wonka actor.
These films are so unique, it was amazing seeing a full breakdown like this. I had no idea that the original was such a failure initially that's crazy! Can't believe the Rock almost played Wonka hahah
Seen the original many times. Only made it about 1/2 way through the second, and only made thru the third cuz I watched it with my mom and she wanted to know how it ends.
Seeing how I worked at the St Louis Wonka branch for 12 years, there was never a mention of Quaker Oats involvement. Only that Gene Wilder walked through the factory dressed up as Willie when the movie first released. The company then was called Sunmark Inc. The then new Wonka Factory was actually in Chicago. Nestles bought the company back in 1990. In the years that followed, all of Sunmark was closed down and its candies were spread throughout other different Nestles factories. Ill never forgive Nestles for the damage their management did to the best job Ive ever had.
I don't think the Depp version is more faithful to the book. I don't remember Wonka's father being mentioned in the book, and even if he is, not in the ridiculous way portrayed in the film!!
@anthonyscully2998 Gene is my favorite, too. But I think Christopher Walken would have done a good job. And i can "imagine him in the role." He was wonderful in Puss n Boots. He can sing and dance, and he can really walk the line between sane and crazy. Lol
I was introduced to the original movie very young at daycare probably around 3 or 4 years-old. I loved it. We'd watch it every year. I then came across the books and read them, even though I hated reading at the time. I loved the first one, the second left something to be desired but was still okay. Then I watched Burton's version...wow was that terrible. It didn't embody any of the book or the original movie IMO. It was just weird. I really disagree with anybody who thinks the Burton version is true to the book. I'll watch this new one, but I'm nervous about it. The Wilder version had such a great cast, even the kids were perfect. I just don't see the cast being matched from the previews, but we'll see. I do like that it's a prequel. At some point someone has to make the sequel.
To be fair, a lot of the narrative as they mentioned in the TH-cam involving the India Palace as well as the oompa loompa singing that was taking from the books, lyrics were authentic. That written, that doesn't mean it is better and in many ways was falling short of the magic that was created in the original film, uncanon or not.

I have to admit I found out only recently that gene wilder played in other movies. I only knew about his role in Willy Wonka. I was so surprised he played in other movies and tv shows. Then again I do normally watch movies for the story and hardly pay attention to who the actors are so it is rare I learn the real names of actors in the first place.
Nicholas Cage would have been great and I’ve always thought he looked a lot like Gene Wilder. I’m also old enough to remember that late start of the film back in the 70s.
Gene Wilder was the ONLY Willy Wonka, followed perhaps by Timothee Chalomet. Hated Depp even though the family loved it as being closest to to the original novel.
I’m a baby boomer and I’m surprised that you didn’t bring up all of the slug bugs in the background of the 1971 version. I think that every generation aught to have a movie about Willy and Charlie. Maybe a child character or two that just can’t keep their faces out of their phones and video games to replace the TV kid.
Sad about what happened to two of Roald Dahl's kids, but now I'm kinda confused about why he didn't care about the happier ending for The Witches, and what was his animosity against Gene Wilder's portrayal of Wonka? I've heard/ read, in fact, a good review of the newest version of the Wonka story, but I did NOT care for the Johnny Depp version. Deeply creepy almost on a Pedo level. THANK YOU, though, for being a REAL person, narrating. I've heard some A.I. narrations of bios and they reeked!
I did see Depp's take on willy Wonka, However because of the original movie the line that talks about today's society the famous line is " you lose you get nothing good day sir." from gene wilder's willy Wonka makes it more meaningful and explains the world we all live in. And that makes it very important for so many people that in my eyes Gene Wilder performance is more inspiring to me more than any other remake because it cares about just turning a profit and disobeying the level of respect to the original actor of the same character. And that is disgraceful at the highest level in the favorability of the other actress and actors that made the original great for me when I was a kid myself.
Wonka is currently in a weird place for me where i actually love each rendition as each have 10x more positives than negatives. Rare to see that in a franchise. Wilder brought the man to life. While chalomet may seem too earnest to become that, a few decades around grant might guide him there. Burton's accuracy to the source material and Depp's insane performance as a man layered in solitude isnt something to discard. Also, one man show from Roy. Man put in WORK. In my mind willy wonka is a kid of a dentist and a nomad, who either grew up with one or the other. One leads to depp the other to wilder. Either way chocolate is the endgame
I love Johnny Depp but for me I am loyal to Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. His portrayal was so manic but not too much and yet he also brought heart to the character.
I grew up on this story, and in particular the Depp version. His version is kooky and weird and hilarious and deeeeply unsettling. Wilder’s is cunning and mysterious and a little cold but sardonic. Timothee’s is genuine and good-natured and kind (which I think is a little underwhelming for the kind of bizarre character he turns out to be). I like all three adaptations. They bring something different. I’m partial to Depp for nostalgic reasons; his film having more grandeur and scope. Wilder’s is goofy and schticky but loses points for “Cheer Up, Charlie” - gains em back with “Pure Imagination”. Chalamet’s is charming, if not a little by the book. To me, as fun as Wonka is, I’d be interested in how he gets reframed by today’s society. In his inception, he’s a fanatical genius whose chocolate is delectable and an aura that’s mysterious. But nowadays, he seems like a whack job billionaire tycoon who could solve hunger and poverty problems and instead spends money on candy and the inventions to make them.
the first film, (1971) what was wrong with charlies buckets teeth? must be an odd story there... ( 13:33 to illustrate ) i am not the first to ask, but i have yet to hear a good answer. there are more, better pics on the internet of what i mean.
I was very young at the time (3 or 4, I think), and I was at my godparents' house rummaging through their movie collection. I was also becoming a huge Bugs Bunny fan at the time, and I saw the character on a cover of a DVD of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. I wanted to watch it, seeing how that Bugs Bunny was on the cover, but he only showed up in the opening logo. However, I adored the movie, nonetheless, as I was in awe at 2 things - the scene where Violet turns into a blueberry (not to mention giving birth to my inflation fetish), and Gene Wilder's performance as Willy Wonka. Now that I think about it, Wilder's Wonka is kind of like Bugs Bunny.
Gene Wilder's Wonka will always be my favorite. Depp's version, through Burton's adaptation, tried to stay so close to the book, that it failed theatrically, in my opinion. I've only seen the new version once, and felt like I was watching a new version of Annie. It was too much of a musical. Even though, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory had quite a few songs in it, it didn't come off as a musical, but more as a fantasy film.
To me I loved Chalomain and Depp but Wilder will always be the best Wonka, I enjoyed the more musical take on the new Wonka, but honestly as good as Grant's acting was i could not take his character with any real seriousness its to ridiculous and i wonder why they did not cast a Little person as it would look less jarring. So for me if I am rating them based on enjoyment of the story I would say 1971 Wilder version is my favorite followed by Wonka and then The Depp version, I enjoyed Johnny's version of Wonka but the story for that version to me was not quite as flushed out as the 1971 version, maybe its because i grew up on the 1971 version but I did enjoy all three movies.
for me personally Depp will always be Wonka I think he’s so funny and did such a good job but Gene is good in its own way not sure if I want to see the newest one though
Derbyshire = DAHR - bih - shirr Staffordshire = STAA - ferd - shirr I think Gene Wilder is my favorite, Johnny Depp was saddled with a totally unnecessary backstory (as much as I love Christopher Lee), and it just didn't work, but I blame the director for that. Depp had to work with what he was given. With Tim Chalamet, I can see how his interpretation can grow into Gene Wilder's.

because it cares about just turning a profit and disobeying the level of respect to the original actor of the same character.
My favourite has to be gene wilder
The 1971 movie was already 15 years old by the time I was born.
It’s also a movie just a movie what’s in the movie that’s everything

Where's your source for Depp saying that about Michael Jackson?
Gene Wilder was underwhelming, as I read the book before I watched it.
Joaquin Phoenix would make an amazing dark Willy Wonka

Thanks my friend
Patricia NEAL was a movie star.
I prefer the classic version with Gene Wilder over anything else.
Although I'm a Depp fan ... hated his version. Gene wilder will always be Wonka.
Dahl’s wife was Patricia Neal, not Patricia Dean.
Nice into beat
Algún día y Wil Smit algún día también sea Willi Wonka sin racismo. Con diferente umpa lumpa.
Will Smith es un buen actor.algun día sea Willi Wonka.

I think Gene Wilder is my favorite, Johnny Depp was saddled with a totally unnecessary backstory (as much as I love Christopher Lee), and it just didn't work, but I blame the director for that. Depp had to work with what he was given. With Tim Chalamet, I can see how his interpretation can grow into Gene Wilder's.
