    After 2.5 years of continuous operation this clock had its first malfunction today. One note of the chimes quit working. Turned out the brass "tab" that connects the monofilament actuator to the hammer broke off where it was soldered. Easy fix, all good now. I'm actually surprised it ran this long without any mechanical problems!

      It’s not how it works. If you see some real mechanical clocks you would be surprised they chime 3MINIUTES later than the hour... itself
      Or sometimes 2 miniutes early.....

      This reminds me of my grandmother's house. The grandmother on my dads side has an old clock that sounds just like this. I miss going there because if covid. But just listening to these chimes, I can fully map out the entire house.

    This is incredible. A steampunk Nixie version of the old chiming mantel clocks that were everywhere back in the day, but without the winding once a week! I wish I had the skills to build something like this.

    I love Westminster chime melody because the clock seems to pray for those who works hard with much risks to protect them against any danger. The clock prays for them at every quarter hour.

      USELESS INFORMATION:
      Long chimes (chimes where the first difference is 3 seconds): 1, 3, 6, 8, 10 (and possibly 12)
      2nd differences: 1 = -1; 2 = +1; 3 = -1; 4 = 0; 5 = +1; 6 = -1; 7 = +1; 8 = -1; 9 = +1; 10 = -1; 11 = unknown
      3rd differences: 1 = +2; 2 = -2; 3 = +1; 4 = +1; 5 = -2; 6 = +2; 7 = -2; 8 = +2; 9 = -2; 10 = unknown

    Thank you! Those are Hermle chime rods and hammer assy that I bought for this project and then modded to suit my needs. This project was a "make it up as you go, based on available parts" thing - surprised it turned out as good as it did - will make another one some day using what I learned from this one.
    If you haven't checked out the Construction Pix link in the description yet, I highly recommend you do.

    • @IvanTimber

      What’s the symbol that is on the base of the rods, also what is The model number?

    • @sootikins
      @sootikins  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IvanTimber Surprisingly I was able to find my invoice. Bought from perrinwatchparts (dot com). Catalog numbers 73-810 (rods) and CP-0691 (hammer assy). Those are Perrin's SKUs, actual Hermle P/Ns unknown. Sold as parts for "Hermle FHS 340.020 movement".
      There is no symbol on the rod base that I can see. Are you seeing a reflection maybe?

    • @IvanTimber
      @IvanTimber ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sootikins nope, chime rods usually have a serial number on the block in front, and the tone just wondering because they sound awesome!

    • @sootikins
      @sootikins  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IvanTimber I've just done a thorough inspection of the block and there are no numbers. Only place I didn't look at is the bottom of the block because that would require disassembly. The audio of this video (recorded with camera mic) does not do justice to the sound of the rods. They sound much warmer/fuller in person. They sound a bit "clanky" to me on the vid.

      There are solenoids under the top cover. Microcontroller outputs fire the solenoids thru MOSFET driver circuits. Solenoid plungers pull "strings" that raise the chime hammers. You can sort of see strings toward end of this video. See entire setup taken apart at eeberfest.net/gallery.php?set=clock

    • @sootikins

      Thanks. And yeah, I fixed the first strike error a long time ago after a couple British guys on a clock forum were giving me a hard time about it using Big Ben on New Years as their proof. :) The first *bong* of the bell marks midnight...

    What I was saying was that the chime seemed to pause for a second between each bar.
    I am used to the Westminster chime timing of Big Ben/The great clock in London.

    • @sootikins
      @sootikins  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** We are talking about the same thing then: your "pause" is my "dotted half note". I notice that the chime doesn't sustain the sound for the entire dotted-half interval in the video, thus the apparent pause. In its present version (faster overall tempo) it sounds considerably better.
      There are a lot of variations of Westminster in use in all sorts of clocks with lots of little differences. But I have to agree that Big Ben is kind of like the "authoritative" version, in which case mine is "wrong".

Each 4-note phrase is three quarter notes and a dotted half. 1-2-3-456, 1-2-3-456, etc. My note durations are programmed correctly. I'll admit the overall tempo is a bit slow here, I've since speeded it up a little.

    I'm looking everywhere for instructions on how to do just the chimes. Does anyone know where I can find a video? I assume the hardware/computer stuff used in this wouldn't be available anymore. Or there is a more efficient way to do it now that years have passed.

      All the hardware (microcontroller and otherwise) is available assuming you can find the tubes. For the chimes look at the pix I linked in the video description. More efficient? I don't know what you have in mind.

      Or to be more direct: you get a mechanical chime unit from an old mantel clock and devise a way to actuate it electrically. In this case I used solenoids controlled by microcontroller and linked the solenoids to the chime hammers using a nylon monofilament. There are no instructions and there is no one right way to do it. Engineer something that works with what you've got...

    Hmmmmmm.....to put it another way, How does a Nixie clock work and how do the westminster chime work like that

      +Elevating Northern Colorado There's no way I can answer that completely in a TH-cam comment. Short answers: the time is displayed on Nixie Tubes (google it) which are a type of neon tube. The chimes are from a regular clock, modified so that solenoids actuate the hammers. The brains of the thing is a Atmega328 microcontroller with a bunch of supporting hardware (shift registers, solenoid drivers, power supplies, etc.),
