    A garden to heal the body and soul, love it! They do say talking to your plants help them grow, whether it's the CO2 you exhale, good vibes, or you just tend to take better care when you love and talk to them. Zucchini is amazing for beginners, but don't plant too too much as each plant produces a ton of veg! It's usually the one gardeners are trying to give to everyone because they have so much haha. There's some really cool stuff on making mini arch trellises for growing beans or peas in beds, might be worth a look! They look cute and beans are great for preserving. One thing my mom has always done, and her mom before, is you try to preserve or freeze a little of each thing you grow. Then on Thanksgiving, you break out all the years harvest for your meal as a celebration of all you grew. Cannot recommend it enough.

      @@016krystal That's what these domes were designed for! There are Growing Domes in every province and territory in the country, and we actually started in the territories working with communities and charities looking for new ways to combat food insecurity.
      We pack each kit full of passive heating features and accessories, the geodesic shape itself assists in climate control creating both a greenhouse effect and igloo effect from accumulating snow acting as insulation. At the moment provided there is 4-6 hours of sunlight, before any electricity or supplemental heating is added Growing Domes can self-heat upwards of 20-25°C above the ambient temperature. When you include additional passive heating systems like a GAHT system or solar vacuum tubes (which we have been testing), you can increase these effects even further.
      We'd still recommend supplemental heating for extreme weather, but our domes are tundra-tested and we welcome the challenge!

    Hi Bec! Just finished my first year of planting and here’s some things I learned: 1) keep the seed packets. Sometimes you have to plant and then once they start to sprout, thin them out. 2) lettuce is definitely easy to grow. 3) you may find slime mold in your beds. Super weird but it’s not harmful. 4) you don’t have to use ALL of your seeds at once, actually spread them out. 5) look up companion planting (lettuce, spinach and strawberries together to increase yield). 6) geraniums are your friend and will keep critters away.
    Greenhouse looks incredible! Great work ❤️❤️❤️

    • @rianlynn3854
      @rianlynn3854 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      companion planting is a huge bonus in space like this. Umm, what the word, biointensive gardening? I think is another. Its where things can really grow well together because they dont steal nutrients the other needs, but their roots are also at different levels as well so they dont crowd. It also keeps down on pests, (most pests show up to eat sick plants. Thriving plants produce a "chemical" that repels pests). You probably already know this, but just in case. Love that you brought this up S R! I was so happy with other things It just went over my head but this is super important. Also, if you look into old native american crop rotation it'd keep your soil happy!

    The greenhouse looks amazing! Growing in a greenhouse is a little different than growing outside, but I watch two channels that are crazy with information for eating healthy and growing you own food. They are, Off Grid with Doug and Stacy and Homesteading Family. I just ordered a fermenting book from Doug & Stacy and I am excited to get started on my new journey of fermenting some of our produce. From our garden so far this year, I have canned chili starter and this weekend I will be canning salsa and spaghetti sauce. If you want to make sauces and the like, stick with varieties of Roma tomatoes, they are "meatier" and thicken up nicely.
    Also, herbs!! So far, I have dried oregano, sweet marjoram, parsley, thyme, rosemary and dill for the pantry. I will dehydrate our peppers for use in sauces and also make sun dried tomatoes and tomato powder that can be used to thicken sauces and make paste for recipes. Also, basil... I dehydrate some and I also make fresh pesto. You can also freeze pesto to have fresh in the winter months. There's nothing like pulling pesto out of the freezer in January, it tastes like summer!
    I suggest that you find a little sunny spot on your land and plant garlic this fall. Order from someone that grows organically in your climate for fall planting. This will ensure that it will survive the colder temps. Weed in spring and enjoy sauteed scapes in late spring/early summer (if you plant hardneck- softneck does not scape) Then, harvest your garlic in the summer. You can freeze garlic up to 6 months in a deep freezer in an airtight container, I use canning jars. I also dehydrate some of my garlic for powder for seasoning. There is nothing like homegrown garlic! So much more tasty than store bought!!!
    If you plan on continuing to garden, I suggest that you buy a large dehydrator. It's defiantly a game changer when it comes to preserving your harvest for use in the winter months, especially herbs, garlic and peppers.
    I know it's a lot of information but I'm so excited to see you excited about growing your own food!!!
    I would do a few different types of tomatoes. A slicer and a couple of different kinds of Romas. I'd also do your lettuces and whatever herbs you use on a regular basis. Just remember, all seeds are not created equal! Get heirlooms if you are able to. Then, you can harvest seeds from your own crops and reuse those next season.
    Start small this year and add a little more next year.
    And Bec, you look great!
    Happy gardening!

    This is pretty exciting, guys. Bec, you look awsome! May I give you some advice about your zucchini in particular? When planting zucchini, it is important to leave plenty of space for the individual plants - about 1.5 to two meters each - because zucchini grow very large. As soon as the seedlings get their first leaves after the cotyledons, you should separate them, you will often read or hear the expression pricking out. And don't worry about your harvest. On average, up to 20 fruits grow on a zucchini plant.

      2 seeds will make a bountiful harvest! I used to garden all my fruits/veggies and can/freeze/preserve, etc. But I never grew zucchini because every single neighbor would and had 5 gal buckets to give away constantly! They take a huge amount of space and strongly suggest having them vine up on a very strong trellis!

    Growing tips I've learned: Take your seed spacing a bit serious. You'd be surprised how big some crops can get just off 1 seed. You can plant a few zucchini seeds in 1 spot and remove all but the healthiest one if you'd like, but definitely don't go hard on the plants that'll eventually get much larger. Remember a romaine head or a red lettuce head looks a specific size in the markets? Give them that space to grow. Take your time giving them water. Test with your finger an inch down to see if the soil is dry. Some newbies like to over water, and that can kill a plant as much as under watering. Try not to water leaves too much, or else you end up with potentially getting mildew and that can kill the plants.
    There's a boatload to learn about gardening in general, but even more to learn about your own personal garden and how it flows. I've been using this 1st year as an experiment as well, and I've already learned a ton about the garden. It's a bit overwhelming at times, because you want to see tons of food come out of it right away, but it takes time.

Great job; nice to see Tim back! 🧤As for planting, I am not a gardener per se but I am interested in such things. There’s great guy- a high energy TH-camr by the handle of creative explained. He’s got tonnes of videos about growing seeds from plants and kitchen scraps PLUS, how to make your kitchen scraps into excellent fertilizer. He is a high energy guy - kinda like Eamon. I think you’ll like him and get great tips! Just a little tip! You can cut the bottom of a head of lettuce and put it in a jar of water and watch it grow! When its a few inches tall (1 week), you can plant it in soil. Love the videos & congratulations Bec!

  • @halleyevans1980
    @halleyevans1980 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You look amazing Bec, I am excited to see your garden. Remember gardening is not so complicated but its always a learning curve. Sometimes overwatering or giving to much love can be a thing also, but talking to them and showing love that way is always a blessing :). When they are just planted seed they need to stay moist so water them daily or atleast make sure they are damp. Once they sprout you can start slowing down on the water and as they progress depending on how your moisture content is inside the dome just read the soil by placing your finger in the soil and if its damp no water, if its dry water :) Do not worry to much about seed depth but depending on seed size you will learn the depths. Small seeds you plant just above the soil and larger seeds you plant further down. You will do great. I always just read up on how to care for certain plants because some plants like different things. Like more water, part shade, full sun etc. I think this is wonderful for you guys :) oxox You should try zucchini cake :) its a delicious way to get rid of all your zucchini. You can also grate your Zucchini and freeze it in portion sizes of one Zucchini for the recipes. Just an Idea so you can preserve it. You can also place it in compost if you decide to do that. So many options yay LOL :) I will leave you guys my special recipe when it is time :) Sending you LOVE!

    So, for a recomendation for gardening: In our garden this year we did something called square foot gardening, it uses a plastic frame, and it has different holes for different plant types, and a stick for measuring depths, it seems to work very nicely from our exprience. The one we use is called a seeding square, but im sure you could find measurments somewhere on the internet.

    I hope you both keep in touch with Ben, you always find the most amazing people! Have him and Tim over for dinner! missing Tim! I bet with their lines of work they could help each other a lot, and I'm sure Eamons got something he needs help with =D
    **edit** HOLY FREAKING HECK I literally just commented on how I was missing Tim, like ten seconds before, and here he is!!! HHHHIIII TTIIIMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So excited to see you back!!!!! HHHIIIIII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    (you know I'm missing Bob too...)
    **edit** tomatoes (and hot peppers) LOVE growing near basil, as do strawberries! Spinach likes strawberries too. If you get them all in the same area they help each other out and have different root depths so they dont compete. Helps with tomato worms too.
    Plants also love music. Talking to them is wonderful, so is singing to them or leaving music on =)

    As an avid gardener, who only uses materials that I compost here at the farm, which includes a copious amount of horse manure, fallen leaves, wood chips, etc., stay away from chemical fertilizers and garden soils. Find a local who has composted manure, add lots of organic materials, i.e., leaves, wood chips, household compost all year long, do not over water, in fact, let some of your first borne and less hardy die, cultivate the seeds from the hardiest drought/chemical pesticide resistant specimens you have, and replant them next year to propagate the hardiest, strongest, produce! Beware of chemicals. Please. I have some of the most amazingly hardy and delicious produce by following this protocol. I love Back to Eden on TH-cam the most magnificent, common sense, perma-culture gardener on the planet! Good luck and be well!

    Looking good you guys!! I began growing 💗 a garden during the Pandemic. Kept hearing about food shortages. I grew tomatoes, squash, corn, cucumbers, sunflowers, peppers. All successful. In little garden in Mexico. My key was grow seedlings in egg like carton or small decomposable planter first. You water and give sunshine. No over feeding. When sprouts emerge and are a couple inches tall, replant. Companion gardening is great. Pick a couple gardeners you like online 1-2. I also read Martha Stuarts Gardening book. So beautiful ❤️. Tomatoes were best I've had in my life by far!!! By the way, i also have gardening outfit hat dress, shoes. So healthy ,so rewarding, so gorgeous. You can pass it on to kids, grandkids . Very memorable. Heres to you having a wonderful garden journey!!! Almost forgot, pests, i use note soap mixed w water. It's safe for animals and environment and marigolds. Good luck!!

    so good to see you guys making your wonderful home. Bec, Im no gardener but tried planting a few things this year (to save some pennies) & my plants were looking a bit sad, I thought they were dying. A friend told me "play classical music for them" ????!!!! So I tried it, the result was amazing, they bounced back & flourished. I may have been having my chain pulled but it seems to work! Making lots of pasta sauce with the tons of tomatoes I have. Cant wait for the broccoli - it looks almost ready. Happy green housing. Take care with your recovery & I award you a Gold Medal for putting up with that crazy Eamon & Oso.
