- Another adventure on a Trail called Steel Bender. The weather has been great and that gets us out on the Trails before the busy season arrives. We all had a great time on the Steel Bender Trail.

As a long-time and frequent visitor to Moab from 3-1/2 hrs north I have had occasion to study the nesting habits of the Diamond Bill Rock Pecker (DBRP) for the past twenty years. I asked myself, 'why are there so many nesting sites yet so few birds'? After careful study I determined that it was because the DBRP did not have a 'homing instinct' like Salmon or Penguins who instinctually return to the same nesting grounds each year. INSTEAD, the DBRP is a Non Reuser. Their species do not reuse their nests. It is part of the breeding routine for these birds to build new nests, usually in new locations every year. THINK OF SPARROWS AND HUMMINGBIRDS. This explains why a species of birds who have almost been hunted to extiction for their diamond bills can still survive despite all odds. A recent discovery published by the HSN has determined that some ingredients in Coconut scented Sun Tan Lotion is BOTH repulsive and detrimental to them. I believe this explains why so few visitors to Moab ever see a DBRP in the wild. At the slightest whiff of suntan lotion they vacate the area. Who Knew, Right???

They are a fascinating species. It's a shame their bills had an industrial application. It's just a classic story about humans not realizing how limited a resource truly is. Luckily now we have synthetic diamond for all of our hard material cutting needs. Hopefully the DBRP numbers can rebound in future years, but not respecting their habitat will surely make it more difficult.
This is why it is critical to stay on trail and not leave your garbage in their home. It might just be a rumor, but I have heard they are sensitive to sound having evolved in the relative quiet of the Moab cliffs. All the more reason to leave your loud exhaust at home when visiting the area. Remember, when you visit Moab you are in their home. Like Rory said, use traction not your horsepower on Moab trails.

And that’s only ONE of the reasons why I’ve taken the doors off of my truck as well. Visibility is just so much better. It’s actually street legal (at least in MY state of Arkansas). I’ve talked to several boys in blue and they think that it’s kinda cool!!! 😊

I drive up to 600 miles a day as an OTR Heavy Haul driver. Stress is a given. But when I shut down and see Mike and Shawn rock crawling with friends I am instantly relaxed.

I think Shawn just needs to dial in his crawl ratios on the buggy. I am watching Kiva climb things like a goat. Buggy probably needs a different gear ratio or something. It pushes too much umpf to make it go fast, not necessarily crawl fast. I guess its also a compromise.
