I think this scammer got the best of me. I spent 14 minutes playing a car noise sound clip off TH-cam and then another 10 minutes walking around my house pretending to talk to employees at Best Buy.

I have a great idea, but you may not like it because you seem like you'd be the person to not break laws - not necessarily a bad thing. Anyway, this idea is as follows: Setup VM. Nothing out of the ordinary except a password protected folder that says something along the lines of "credit card info" or "financial..." Within the folder is what appears to be a zipped folder that suggests if contains pictures of your credit card. Go through the normal drill, but at the time of payment, after many failed attempt and in utter frustration just before giving up say something like "Wait a minute, I have pictures of my credit card on [computer, folder...]. Can I just sent it to you and you can put in the payment info?" This should be easy assuming the remote access client provides file sharing (it likely does). Now for the fun part. You send him the "zipped folder." But the zipped folder is actually malware disguised as a zipped folder. The malware could simply erase as much of his data as possible, it could try to secretly infect all the computers on their network, or it could try to immediately bring down there network at one time, whatever floats your boat. Sure it's illegal, but I thinks it's only fair.
FirstName LastName That could actually work and you don't need to break any law.. What you can do is to have the folder and mention you have the info in the zip like you mentioned (also maybe have it "password" protected)
but instead of saying anything just have a fake phone call and say: "I'm sorry, I have to go .. some emergency blaa,blaa, I will call you back.. in the meanwhile you can try help fix my computer, I will pay right after I'm back"..
Now, if they do download the file, it's their own fault and you did not break any law as having a malware on your own computer is not illegal, haha
Now if they try to crack the password or open the file inside your VM, that will be a bit more problematic. Maybe have a scheduled timer to shutdown your computer so they have to make a decision fast or just have the malware be capable of uploading itself somehow (still not illegal, I think as you are not actually sending it)

Oops .. I forgot that I was already subscribed, if only one could do it twice. I hate those tax scams, I've seem so many scared older people asking what to do and all I can tell them is it's a scam. Their world is so shaken up even after being told, and what about those who follow through. There's a need for many more voices to keep them off balance. I wish I was more tech savvy, but at least I've got these videos to show potential victims. Please keep them coming, I wish you could stick it back like those false tech scams. Thanks.
i'm 66 years old, i've gotten several of these calls. i just tell them they are full of crap and to send the police, that i just took a batch of cookies out of the oven,

At first a call like that would freak me out, but as soon as they want some kind of store/gift card as payment, I would know something was up.

I got one of these calls in Australia - claiming to be the Australian Tax Office. I got the guy SO angry, because I kept swearing right from the first moment and just about every second word was 'f#ck'.
I said stuff like "Yeah, mate, I got this f#cking phone call about some f#cking tax audit. . What the f#ck is that all about?"
He said "Please sir, do not swear, or I will have you arrested"
I said "What? F#cking arrested for saying f#ck?" "You know it's not against the law in Australia to say f#ck"
He got even more upset and said "No sir. You must stop using those kinds of words, it is not permitted"
I said "F#ck you, mate! I'm allowed by law to f#cking say f#ck" "You can't f#cking stop me or arrest me. That's just f#cking bullshit"
He was almost crying by this stage and said "Sir. I cannot speak with you when you are using such language" and hung up on me. . . Ha ha ha. . . . so funny

Just to really wind them up and get them excited etc, you should have said:
"are those card numbers not coming up on your system or something? Hmmm, I wonder why ...... ahhh, ahhh, oh no! ... wait a second, wait a second .... I've just realised why it isn't matching up on your system. I asked the lady at Best Buy for two cards of $750 but she has made an error. She has made a big error. Instead of $750 per card she has put $7,500 per card. That is a total of $15,000 dollars. Please forget those card numbers and pin numbers, I will have to go back to Best Buy to get this corrected. Can you please not process those cards on your system!! I do not want the IRS to get $15,000. Can you stay on the line while I get this sorted out? I am going back to Best Buy right now"
If they think they have just scored a whopping $15,000 dollars they will be doing everything they can to get the cards through their system. It would be hilarious to hear them getting flustered over nothing.

And to really up the ante, to create a level of authenticity, you could actually jump in you car and go for a drive down your nearest Best Buy, if there's one nearby. Make sure he hears the car starting, the traffic noise, the car door open and close, the noise of people at the shopping mall and then see if you can get the store clerk to say "welcome to Best Buy" or something like that. Really fool the guy on the phone into thinking he has legitimate Best Buy card and pin numbers that are worth $15,000. Heh hehhhh!
Alternatively you could also pre arrange a "set up" with someone you know who can pose as a Best Buy store clerk. So even if there is no Best Buy store you could just go somewhere busy (lots of noise and bustle) and follow a script that would go something like:
*Michael*: Hello ma'am
*Fake Best Buy (FBB) clerk*: Hello sir, welcome to Best Buy, how can I help you today.
*Michael*: I just purchased these two cards and asked for them to have $750 installed on each one however your other clerk has placed $7500 on each one by mistake.
*FBB clerk*: Oh dear! I do apologize sir. Do you have the receipt with you.
Michael: Yes, sure, it's here in my wallet. Just a sec .... there you are... I only purchased these less than an hour ago.
*FBB clerk*: okay, let me just confirm the card numbers to the receipt....... Okay, it all checks out. I'm terribly sorry for the error sir. .... let me just cancel these cards first... and... then.. I'll refund the full $15,000 to your checking account.
*Michael*: ok great, phew!! Thought I'd nearly lost 15 grand there.
*FBB clerk*: i apologize once again sir and I will be having a little chat with Eleanor ... once again! She's new and its not the first time she has placed an extra zero on the end of transactions.
*Michael*: that;s fine. Honest mistake. But if we could get the two $750 cards created again that would be great. I have money owing to the IRS........

The scammers would be jumping up and down desperately trying to get the cards to work ... but as soon as they hear the FBB clerk say "let me just cancel these cards" i'm betting that moment will be absolutely priceless when they respond to losing that small fortune they thought they were going to gain.
And feeding them little nuggets such as a store clerk who often makes mistakes by putting more money on those cards than they're supposed to may get them to ask "which Best Buy did you go to sir, which location" so that they can tell or ask other people to go to that one. LOL
But whatever you do, just don't let on that you are scamming them when you're done messing with them. Don't call them names or accuse them at any point. You really want to leave them hanging on the thought that they just missed out on some actual money. This will really eat them up for days!!!
Okay so to end the conversation, after you have supposedly received the two new cards and while your are still at the mall or wherever, tell the scammer that you now have the cards and will read the numbers out.... Start with the PIN numbers for both cards, then start reading out the first card number ... but then part way through start to sound panicked and tell the scammer that your cell phone battery is about to die because you have had him on the phone all this time. Then disconnect the call.
Again, this will leave them hanging on their close call to obtaining lots of money and they will be worked up about this for days. LOL

I can't wait to get a call from these guys. As soon as they say they put out an arrest warrant, I'm going to start swearing and raving about why they sent the arrest warrant when I'm calling to resolve the problem. Then when I "get in my car" I'm going to do the car sound trick with an arizona tea can.

I think this is the worst scam they do. The more honest you are the more distressing this would be. The immediate threat of arrest and confiscation of assets is so cruel. My site deals with people who are disabled and that can include extreme mental health problems. A phone call like this could lead someone to suicide.

I work in a place that sells gift cards. As a precaution whenever someone buys an abnormally large amount in gift cards I tend to tell them the IRS will not call and ask for payment in gift cards.
