Great points on having these two features for sure!!the one thing I didn't do when I first bought some hang on The backs was make sure they had adjustable flow! Jason I agree with you on a must feature. I purchased the ML 375. The selling point was the submerged motor, however it easily becomes disconnected my cichlids knocking into it. I’ve had that problem with the Aqueons HOB. Seems like Tidal is the most reliable.

    Hey Jason. I have 3 of the Tidal 110 and I love that they are quiet and I love that it can hold alot of media. Also love that the entire media basket can come out easy for maintenance. A drawback is that the skimmer slots can get debris from live plant matter and is not easy to remove unless taking entire filter to sink and using a sink sprayer. Just my 2 cents!!!

    Jason,
    Great video man. I recently bought a tidal 55 for my 20 gal I set up about one month ago. I had the tetra whisper 20 that came with the 20 gal tank. That thing was so noisy and the motor was in the filter tank. After watching yours and KG tropical channel about filters I decided to buy the tidal 55 and not the 35. I wanted the longer intake and I love the adjustable suction so when I feed my fish the food doesn't get sucked into the skimmer. I think it's so neat how the filter uses rocks and carbon and a sponge at the bottom to really filter the tank. I hate buying filter media every month that can get so expensive. The top skimmer is so nice how it can pickup food and other stuff on the top. And it is really quiet with Excellent filtration. Did I get to big of filter? Lol..

    This may be a weird question:
    Q: Do the fish like the motor in the water?
    I assume the in the water motors are quieter because of the waters affect sound waves versus air. This likely increase sound in the water column. Might this irritate the fish?

    i got a marineland penguin pro 275 on my 20 long crayfish tank and its a really good filter. flow is nice, build quality is nice, media options is awesome. only thing is i think mine got damaged in shipping or something because its pretty loud. cool thing about marineland is they will send you a replacement. another thing is they should have put some sort of rubber thing around the pipe that comes from the motor into the media compartment because when you have the flow at 100% it will leak a bit and drip onto the back of the motor back into the tank.

  • @MegaMaddydog
    @MegaMaddydog 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      And with the aquaclears you don't have that God awful big boxy motor unit with the bright blue adjustment dial hanging down INSIDE your tank in plain view. Looks absolutely horrible!! With aqauclears all you have is the pick up tube inside the tank. Plus all the Tidal series HOB have a terrible amount of water bypass getting around the filter.
      Bought a Tidal 75 after seeing all the great reviews, installed it and instantly noticed water bypassing the filter and going right back into the tank. Then stood back and looked at the aqaurium and saw the huge motor housing unit with the bright blue dial on it hanging down inside the tank making things look ugly!! I'm constantly having friends and relatives ask "whats the black box thing with the blue dial thingy on it at the back of your aquarium for?"
      Needless to say, the Tidal 75 got removed from my livingroom tank that everyone's sees and replaced with an Aquaclear 70 and the Tidal 75 got installed on my bedroom tank out of sight of everyone.

    One feature I wish I had Is that my aquaclear started the water flow by itself after I turn it off for water changes. However all it takes is a cup of water in the filter and it starts right up. It also has a automated flow switch that slows down the water current. I have discus and as you mentioned I don’t want them blown all around. Wish I had one that you mentioned with a sealed top. Well, there is nothing I can do now. I already have my aquaclears. I will say this though....my aquaclears have a large compartment and have done an amazing job on my tanks! When I get another tank I will get one that you mentioned. Have a great day Jason! Sincerely, Marty Borst 👍🐠

    One of the most important factors when I buy hobs... I buy the older ones available like older aqua clear models I'm willing to pay an extra 20-30 dollars for one. I've kept one since 2006 and its still been running strong. I've bought a newer one recently and it cracked when it barely touched the tank. I was so shocked, I compared the two and the newer models feel so light and not as sturdy as the older ones. Also the same to the heaters. I feel like the market has progressed too far to the side of making money while compromising quality, that its suspect of me to buy new hobs so ill have to check out the hob you recommend!!!

      The Tidal filters have a sturdier plastic! I'm not A HOB filter person, (Prefer Canisters) but my Fluval 306 canister head clips that seals the motorhead to the canister somehow chipped and doesn't seal the canister, and Fluval wants an arm and leg just for the replacement head ( You can't replace the clips! You have to replace the whole motor head!) So I decided to try the Tidal 75 for Half the price, and to my surprise, I am so happy with it that I will probably be replacing my canisters (The next time they go bad) with the Tidal series! I’d take fluval C-series over tidals anyday but its personal preference cuz I helped a friend set up a tidal and we spent a good hour balancing the flow between the intakes so that the intake tube actually sucks stuff up. And mainly because fluval Cs have harder transparent plastic, easier to monitor internals without popping the hood.

    I purchased a tidal 55 for a 29 gallon tank. I chose the 55 over the 35 because I wanted the longer pick up tube. The filter works fine but it is not totally quiet. I can hear a humming and slight rattling from the motor. I checked the armature and impeller and looks to be ok. It’s only a slight problem for me because the tank is in my living room. I’m only aware of the noise when there is no other activity in the room. I tried to contact Seachem customer service to see if it‘s normal to make that slight amount noise but no luck so far. P.S. I am surprised you did not mention chamber capacity to hold media. I have converted all my HOBs to foam for mechanical and biofiltration using foam blocks. Aqua clears and tidals are so close to being perfect. Tidals need to get rid of the not being able to turn the surface skimmer off and the aqua clears need to have a internal pump. Though as they are aqua clears are superior because that surface skimmer in the tidals ruins the entire filter.

    Topfin Filters have a flow control which I really like, way better than the *Fluval or *Aqua Clear, (*same company) For larger tanks Jason may be right but for five and ten gallon tanks the Topfin filters are great. • @TheOfficialSteelReign

    Great information! Personally I have never had to worry about the flow rate so much. I never had a HOB with that feature, so I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything, plus I have pretty big tanks when compared to the average hobbyist. However, that "in tank" motor feature is the truth! Now that I know THOSE exist, I'm definitely going to start replacing my old filters with these new types. I asked you once if you preferred Marineland over the AquaClear brands and you said yes. If you had to choose between Marineland Pro and the Seachem Tidal brand, which way would you go? Would you still lean towards Marineland?

    • @PrimeTimeAquatics
      @PrimeTimeAquatics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think they are both good. One issue with the marineland PRO is some lids don't fit tightly because the motor gets in the way. The Seachem has a surface skimmer that gets clogged sometimes.

    • @PrimeTimeAquatics
      @PrimeTimeAquatics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For now - most likely you will have to get them a larger tank as they grow. I had five comet goldfish in a 40 gallon breeder and eventually moved them out to someone with a pond because I didn't want to take up one of my 125 gallon tanks for them.

      Many, many years ago, when I was a kid, everyone used an air pump which went into a see through media box. The media box was filled with filter floss and carbon chips in it. And it sat on the bottom of the tank for a month or more, until you took it out to clean it. Was cheap and efficient.

    I am using two Aquaclear 50 filters on my 33 long. And honestly, they dont really do the best job. I hate canisters. Wish I could find something to replace them. I would use the AC 70, but I think 140 gallons of filtration in a 33 gallon tank would be overkill
