    I don't mind a little bypass with my filters. Moving water is my main concern, and if 20% or so does not go through the media, that's good enough for me.

    I have a couple running in order to polish the water. I find them extremely annoying for all the reasons you mentioned. I tried putting one on my Oscar’s’ tank. They dismantled the intake. 😂😂😂.

    On of the biggest downsides of HOB filters is priming. The Aqua Clear, for example, may have trouble restarting after a power outage. The Tidal, with its pump in the tank, doesn't have this issue.

    • @aalan7850

      Huge plus for me. My aqua clear syphon would always stop and it would never self restart

    I replaced the entire motor on my Tidal 55 and it only cost $15. The only issue I have with Tidal filters is that even with a pre-filter they let in too much crap inside the filter especially around the motor housing.causing the impeller to get blocked.

    Awesome video I have tidal it's an amazing hang on back, but some of the done falls are quite large. The noise is load. But UGF is my favourite for low tech setups.

    My solution to this problem was to start using HOB canister filters on my smaller aquariums. They are quiet with plenty of water flow and no bypass.

    You are so right. I use a HOB and sponge filters. For Many years, I used DIY top filters. In June, Just switched back to HOB. Until I drop it and it cracks then back to DIY top filters.

    I bought a 10 gallon tall (12"x12"x15") aquarium kit that came with a Top Fin PF10 power filter. I set my tank kit up on a bookshelf but noticed that it was starting to sag after a few days, so I decided to unplug everything, empty it, and move it to a kitchen table. During this move, I promptly dropped the PF10 into the tank. It hasn't worked since.
    Lucky for me, I buy junk on eBay all the time, so I had an UGF kit I was able to fit, an old Lees box filter, tubing, a pump and a gang valve. Plus, I could scoot the tank back closer to the wall and have more room on the table.

    I’m still new to fish keeping, only 1 tank with a Tidal 35. I like it, the water is nice and clear. But I’d like to set up a Betta tank and will use a sponge filter to keep the water flow gentle. One thing with the Tidal. I had a honey gourami and he got an injury. I posted it on a Facebook group and someone said that their gourami also got an injury and he said it was from the edges on the tidal.

  • @jessicahinman1338

    I keep a canister and a hob on all my tanks. The hob is customized to be more of a fine particle catcher. I clean them more frequently, and thus don't have to clean my canister as often. Because everyone who has ever had to clean a canister knows how terrible and time consuming it is. Lol! When I customize and add my own media in the hobs, I try to make it as close to the design and placement of the cartridge as possible. Specifically with the flow into and out of the hob in mind. Sometimes it has to be tweaked just a little bit from how the cartridge would have sat inside the filter. But essentially, all cartridges are inserted vertically, so that is how I place my media. Like a thinner coarse sponge placed vertically. Most hob are designed with the water flow back to front. So that is the order I place the media. Coarse sponge at the back, then fine floss(I use quilt batting) in front of it, and bio/chemical in the very front. I don't really ever use chemical media anymore, just saying. And you really can't fit a whole lot of bio media in most of these hob. The way I use them, I don't really need it at all, my canisters are almost completely full of bio media. I pretty much just keep a little in the hobs as a redundancy, just in case something happens with the canisters. Some hob filters are a bit thin back to front for doing this diy media "cartridge" I am talking about. And this is where you might need to tweak the position a bit. Usually by cocking the whole media set up to diagonal. Think about a tetra whisper 30-60, how the intake is in the middle with a media chamber on each side. They are a little thin. So in it I would place my vertical diy media "cartridge" going diagonal from the back outer corner to the front inner corner. This makes a little more room for water flow coming in the back/middle corner. And for a little more bio media in the front/outer corner. I hope this makes sense. It was a bit harder to explain than I realized it would be. But nearly all hob designed for cartridges are designed like a tetra whisper, so this is my go to. Then of course there are filters with very strange cartridge placement inside them, that require a bit more thought, like the aqueon quietflow 75. And ones that are so strange I still haven't figured out how to diy the media for it, like this old rena hob I got with a set up years ago. Given time, I believe I will figure one out for it though. Lol!

    I have a aqueon quietflow 10 that I got for 15$. Was worth the investment since I wanted more space in the tank. I bought a 2$ stainless steel cover for the intake and its been EXTREMELY worth its 2$ price tag. But I actually prefer hang on internal filters, like the Aqueon quietflow 3 or tetra internal power filter. The HOB does what I need it to do, since I'm not a fan of sponge filters in my planted aquarium and they really are relatively helpful in cleaning the water column. They are not as modifiable as the internal filters but adding that stainless steel intake filter did the trick. I was able to slow the flow that way and add in filter floss as my biomedia. Overall, they're not as good as other options im sure, but for my little 10 gallon it does a great job

    @tonyadams4726 ปีที่แล้ว

    So I am not a Lord of the Sump yet lol. I have however decided that it’s the way to go. Anything above 75 gallons will have a sump. I just love all the media and they look relatively easily to clean plus I absolutely love the idea of a Refugium with micro fauna living in it. Anything below 75 will be sponge filters from now on.

    I prefer air driven filters. I do own hang on backs with 0 in use. I also own multiple canister filters with 2 in use the particular tank's the are on are definitely over stocked. I also have power heads that I tend to use as polishing filters if needed and for jump starting a new tank or a quarantine tank. People should try to avoid hype as much as possible and filter their tank's however they and the tank inhabitants enjoy. 😁 thanks for sharing Bentley, hopefully you can actually find a pro to hobs. I struggle to see the pros myself. 😊

    One of the most infuriating things about HoBs is when they add the world's cheapest thing for the actual pump to attach to the hob container. Aqueon, marineland, fluval, aquaclear, I've heard so many issues with the attachment points on the pump breaking.

  • @minanora5025
    @minanora5025 ปีที่แล้ว

    Air, power head, and canister filters. Why? Because I'm busy. I love how easy it is to maintain the canister filters. Yeah, they take a bit of time but I only have to do it every few months, at the most. You can adjust the flow, they're quiet, and you have a lot of flexibility with media.
    I used to use hang on backs for all of my tanks but I had to check them so often, and clean them so often.... plus the evaporation, it just didn't work for me

  • @Chick-In-Of-TheSea
    @Chick-In-Of-TheSea ปีที่แล้ว

    Noise w/ dropped waterline - check. Bypass - check. For the noise, I ordered a baffle from Etsy. Works well for the most part, but the top of it is a slime collector since it sits under the light. For the bypass, seems I cut media to the perfect size, with some of it emerged. However, the media, esp. floss/softer media, "slumps" after awhile and either creates bypass down the overflow chute or water flows over the media. Ah, filtration woes.
    Also, old biowheels were great - I ran one for a good 11 years. It finally got a rip and wouldn't spin. I replaced it, but the new one ripped in about a week. Replaced again. Same issue. In one week. The wheels are no longer made with quality in mind, it seems.
    Also cleaning the sludge out a HOB is just... annoying. I avoid it at all costs unless the filter is making a weird noise or something.
    Then we have the filters that don't self-prime when the power goes out. They can be running dry if you're not home or don't have them on auxilliary power.
    One more thing to add - if a HOB is not level, it can overflow onto the floor. Never happened to me, thankfully, but it has happened to some hobbyists. Could end up in an electrical hazard or some ruined walls or flooring.
    I really like this filtration series you're doing, Bentley.

    An acquaintance once told me that the AquaClear was the best filter going... I've used them in past years with kit type aquariums. Sure, they have a good flow rate but they're not - in My opinion a thorough filter. They don't have the surface area to properly maintain a satisfactory bacteria colony like that of a Fluval fx4, etc...

    If you break your HOB casing then you need to be a little more careful lol. But in the end All this stuff is relatively cheap. The skimmer noise on the Tidal is wild when the water level drops under it. I personally like being able to add little bags of media in the HOB so i can pull one out when i cycle new tanks. I do big water changes weekly so priming the aqua clear is annoying every time. The tidal was sold as "so awesome" but that skimmer is no bueno now that i have like 10 of them. Recently went back and bought a AC 70 and the lid is already up because of how i restricted the water flow im assuming. So yea good VIDEO they all have their drawbacks. But I feel more confident with these giving clear water and not leaking compared to the FX$ i have on my turtles.

    I always heard the big hype on aquaclears for as long as i can remember. Always been a marineland penguin person. About 2 months ago i finally broke down and bought a aqua clear 50. Thinking it would move water like penguin 200 i have on another 29 with plecos in it. Man was i wrong. No where close to the water movement or the mechanical filtration of the penguin. I can see for bio filtration the aqu clear has the better but i run sponge filters. So dont really need the hob for bio.
    I have penguins that are running since 2005 . Still going strong and bio wheels still spinning .i just spray off the pads and reuse them till they have to be replaced . Which if i keep up on it and dont use to much water pressure. They will last couple years .

    Bentley so I'm glad my HOB sucks cuz if it didn't I would trash it haha. I have several Title HOB my only issue with them is the skimmer. 1st thing I do with them is seal off those skimmer vents. I wish they would make a model without the skimmer that's my only beef with Title series HOB.

  • @Tbug666
    @Tbug666 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My only real complaint with my Tidal 110’s is the long, intake tube on each of them barely takes in water and the skimmer area is where 98% seems to be happening. Even though I’ve tried adjusting between the two it’s basically a joke. I also use the old fashioned gravel filter because it works great and cheap as can be. Nothing to break except maybe an air pump. Been running this setup for almost 2 years with 4 piranha in a 75 gallon tank with no issues and trust me, they are dirty eaters. Especially now they are 7”. I do a monthly water change and take out 50% because I feel the need even though my water testing is fine. Yes, nitrates have reached 80ppm but that’s another exaggerated worry with aquariums. Keep ammonia levels and nitrites under control and worry less about nitrates. But simply observing your fish everyday lets you know a lot about their health. Common sense and quit believing all these people trying to sell their products and endorsements.

    1st, love your channel... I think you over exaggerate a bit about the "noise" of the tidal. People that are too "LAZY" to keep their fish tank filled are not the fault of the hob. I think you need to show a video "for proof" of how low the water is when the Seachem Tidal starts to make noise just to show how lazy a person is from not keeping their tank full. I have a 90 gallon aquarium with two Seachem Tidal 110's on it. They RocK! They work Great!

    The Bio Wheel is not a gimmick IMO. Hands down my favorite HOB and I've been in the hobby 36 years and I have tried them all starting with an AquaClear back in 1988 when I first got into the hobby. I am not impressed with the new Penguin Pro and I prefer the old model the Penguin Pro replaced. The new Penguin Pro is noisy compared to the model it replaced and I don't like that you have to open it up to see the Bio Wheel. Luckily they are still making the old Bio Wheel models for sale on Amazon because they are not for sale in the stores anymore.
