The beans thing is because apparently in ancient Mediterranean cultures beans were often associated with the underworld or the soul, and Pythagoras led a cult where he forbade eating beans because he believed they contained human souls lol. I think the other rules might be references to things like this or are metaphorical but are also treated literally

They were philosophers, mathematicians, and quite notably, one of the earliest practitioners of a full vegan diet. Interesting, due to their belief that the material world did not matter, as the only thing that mattered is the world of forms (revealed through math), both men and women were allowed to participate actively in the cult as a result.
