In 1976, I was 3 years old running around the house singing this song and Momma would roll on the floor laughing... I remember this song being my lead in to ask for a milkshake.

I was doing a workout at Laval University in Quebec City when this song came on. The attendant, who only spoke French, was singing along and gyrating to the lyrics so I asked if he understood the words. No, he said that he just loved the groove of the music. Apparently KC spent a great deal of time thinking up catchy jingles that people would remember when they visited the local music stores looking for the latest hit records to buy.

All KC and the Sunshine Band hits were written by their bass player/producer Rick Finch and their lead singer/keyboard player Harry Wayne Casey (KC). Finch told Songfacts this song was directly inspired by dance moves they witnessed in clubs. He explained: "The Bump was big back then, and then every once in a while you'd see someone break loose and shake their booty like Jell-O. We figured, okay, how do you write about this? You know, say it like it is. We also were collecting phrases, trying to find a buzz word and write about it, or a catch phrase, and try and expound on that. Just trying to keep it fun."
Finch goes on to explain this method of tailoring songs to disco culture: "As we started performing, we'd pay attention to what the people were doing, either body moves or body language, and try to transfer that back into the next production. As soon as we got back off the road we'd go right into the studio with that freshly captured energy, start recording, and not try to think too much."

A phenomenal 70's band! 👏 I was always a Rock guy and started getting into Punk in the mid-70's. But you gotta give it up for KC & the Sunshine Band. Soulful, danceable, and just a veritable force of nature live. ❤

Whenever this song came out in the 70's I was around 6 or 7. I remember we couldn't say booty around grown folks in my community where I lived! Lol Yeah imagine when booty was a bad word for kids! We would say Shake your um um! Lol 💃💃💃💃

I remember when I was in 3rd grade and they were playing this song during lunch period. One of our teachers, who happen to be top heavy, started dancing to this song and all of us boys thought the song was saying "Shake Your Bobbies". We were all laughing at here dancing.

I saw them live my senior year of HS at Disney World in 1980. Every year Disney held grad night where high schools from all over the state of Florida had a night in the park just for them.
I got in trouble in the third grade for singing this with my buddy during a rain day when we weren't doing shit in class.
This song was all the rage my sophomore year of high school & I remember my gym teacher insisting we all learn the dance that went with it, lol. I’ve forgotten it all now, but no one was sitting it out!

1976 was the first year I followed music and I got a AM/FM transistor radio for my 14th birthday. Bohemian Rhapsody, Convoy, You Sexy Thing, Love Rollercoaster, Saturday Night, Nights On Broadway, Take It To The Limit were some of the popular songs of that moment. Yes it was a great time for music.

You two make me smile! Great reactions....There was something to say about Disco at the time..We were out every Friday or Saturday meeting the girls to GO DANCING. Loved KC...The best place in our town was the El Rancho Tropicana in Santa Rosa Ca. The Oakland Raiders practiced there and every once and awhile out dancing with us on the dance floor. You knew who was a Raider because they were huge and towered over all the other guys..It was allot of fun!!!

The Sunshine Band did a cover of Blackwater Gold which was an underground club hit back in the day.

This is just such a happy song from the first note... I honestly did not like disco in the 1970's but, man, it sounds so much better now! Maybe it's the passage of time, or a more refined musical tasted... or just that the disco/funk scene was so much fun. Anyway, loved your reactoin - so good to see you enjoying a classic 70's hit with me. KC & The Sunshine was a phenom.
