Empire of the Sun may be the least regarded by the public of Spielberg's WW2 cycle but I'm not sure if it isn't quietly the best. And the is probably the best child performance committed to film. Bale isn't just saying the lines he's performing at an adult level. I made a point of remembering Bale's name back in the day after seeing this and well, here we are.
I love that the old veteran Colonel knows exactly why Jamie hands him the milk. All the uniforms tell us something but none of them say a word, however we know immediately when the camera zooms in on the man's face exactly who these men are. It's like Spielberg told the casting director to "find me a man with a face that screams career American officer for this kid to surrender to". Even the shot from behind and to the right of the man is perfect. You see the sidearm, and you barely see "U.S." on the holster.

Just want to point out the white flying flag (parachute) in the background when he says "I surrender" which is also a line from earlier in the film. So many hidden gems in this film
I showed that movie to my daughter when she was 15 years old and that was the first time she saw a kid get smacked in the head. When I told her this was a real story written by the boy himself, she learned why old people feel we actually evolved

Such a great movie, never understood why Empire of the Sun didn't get more acclaim and awards for Steven Spielberg , maybe because it came in the first half pre Schindler's List portion of his career when he was dismissed as 'just a fantasy/Sci-fi Director' - and as many times times as I have seen this movie I would never guess that Christian Bale played Jim, but I guess that helped him later on to avoid the Child actor type casting and get good roles as an adult actor.
I absolutely love the scene when Jim (Christian) breaks away from Malkovich, turns and glares at him. Aware at last that the Malkovich character was manipulative and devious and was using Jim for his advantage. Jim (Christian) NAILED Malkovich with that GLARE!

Read the J G Ballard semi-autobiographical novel it is based on (he was a child-prisoner in a Japanese Internment Camp), then work your way through his novels. Very worth the effort.

Going in circles and circles laughing, desperately trying to act like a boy again and then for a split second you see the quintessential American troops breaking through the dizziness. First time l saw this movie, this is the scene that made me cry. The movie at this point is about to end and after an hour and a half of grueling violence and suffering under the Japanese, the sight of a green mass of American soldiers was too emotional. Liberation at last and the end of suffering.
After watching Empire of the Sun, I felt hopeful again, after watching Schindler's List, I felt like putting my head in the oven. And after watching Jaws, I was almost afraid of the deep end of the pool LOL

I'm getting pretty old. This is one of the best movies I've ever had the privilege to view. I will forever be a fan of Christian Bale because of it.
