don't slander the monkey ball arcade music, I still listen to it on a regular basis! totally agree though that the arcade game has a tech demo feel, I've always been intrigued by that
Absolutely agreed! It's less in-your-face than SMB's soundtrack but that music still slaps! Full-Moon Night, Underwater and Interstellar have permanent spots in my playlist rotation.
While I prefer Super's OST overall, I outright prefer the arcade version's Master stage music and Name Entry over Super's. And I'm tempted to say I prefer full-moon night to Super's underwater
I found an OG Monkey Ball arcade cabinet in Helsinki, Finland. I was a bit disappointed by the fact that, indeed, it is very barebones. But the banana controller is just too funny.
5:22 this clip is what made me find out that super monkey ball deluxe has some exclusive floors that aren't in 1 or 2 lol, thanks for that. good video :)
Good video! As much as I love the backgrounds in the original two games/deluxe, the NAMOI aesthetic says less is more in a good way! Also big ups for the Brian Matt shoutout.
I know Monkey Ball started out with the player just being a generic marble. But the developers considered it too dull. Thus they changed it to monkeys in a ball. I don’t know when that happened in development. But my theory is that the aesthetics and music were already set when the change was made. But when they did the GameCube version, they updated it to fit with the new characters.
I like to call the change a Sega-ism. Back when Sega used to make brand-new IPs, they usually had longtime designers onboard to create visually distinct characters that had incredible "mascot" potential. A lost art with most game publishers as a whole nowadays
Being too dull wasn't the reason, it was because it was hard to tell which way the marble was going i think. They tried a variety of different ideas and eventually tried using a dev's random monkey model which worked

I really love the sense of urgency and anxiety you get in the arctic world

Found this over on the recommended videos and I will say that I'm pleasantly surprised by the research and dedication you've put into this. Great job!
Thanks man -- Crazy to hear that it's actually getting picked up by the algorithm 🙏
Also here because of recommendations

This video feels like an excuse to pump up Super Monkeyball's aesthetics rather than a genuine look at the differences between it and Monkeyball.
Yeah the monkey ball arcade hating was really weird LOL

(also very nice editing!!)
Thanks man! -- I'll keep on it.
great video!
MONKEY BALL 1 music is great
Man, nothing beats Monkey Ball 1 and 2.
Naomi SmB is really neat.
original arcade and gamecube looks better that the monstrosity it has become now.
If they made a new game that copied this exact aesthetic with brand new worlds and levels, I’d buy the shit out of it
