I wore 40s in my teens and felt like Robinson Crusoe - no TH-cam community to tap into back in the 70s, but then you could find genuine 40s stuff in the thrift shops, like you find 60s-80s stuff now. Also thrifting was seen as a very naff then (it horrified my mother) so less competition for goodies.
Lol, my mother is horrified today by my thrifting & garbage picking. 😂 I think the root of it is a desire for personal success. If one has to buy used clothing or furniture or whatever, then one hasn’t become a financial success, which we’ve all been taught is a sign of a personal failing. And it’s not that my generation is any different, really. I see the same attitude amongst my peers all the time-yearning for new things, always wanting to consume. That mentality is the backbone of our economy, which is a problem, bc it’s not sustainable. Resources are finite, after all. I think thrifting has become much more acceptable, but I think the underlying motivation is still an issue. I’ve encountered a lot of people who thrift solely to be able to afford more things in order to fill up a huge closet. More is better. Name brand means value. I’m not on a high horse or anything-I see that same behavior in myself sometimes, too.
The magic of hats, vintage or modern, is that they transform everything......your look, your attitude.....everything. Wear a hat and your become a mystery that no one can ignore. I get a thrill whenever I wear a hat because I know everyone is looking at me and wondering......wondering what? Well, I hope it's that I look fabulous! And I must say, you have what we call a "hat face".... a perfectly gorgeous hat face!
I am so glad you brought up the “dressing for your body type” thing. That’s something that’s always bothered me in the realm of fashion. If you like something, wear it! I get a little self-conscious in hats because people already stare at me a lot, but I have a few that I really enjoy wearing. One of them is an antique men’s top hat that has been well worn. 🎩 Very informative video! Thank you!
Loved this video! I'm studying millinery and part of it is freshing up and restoring vintage hats. It can be done by steaming them carefully and replacing stained petersham ribbons. Millinery is dying out as a craft so it's always a good idea to support your local millinery by giving them work!

When I am pinning on a hat and my hair is freshly washed and slippery, I find I can back comb a very small area, spritz that with hair-spray, put a hair grip in place there, then pin my hat pin under the hair grip. As you mentioned earlier, a lady doesn't need to remove her hat so the little 'knotty' area remains a secret! :-)

When I was a young, poor Airman's wife I wore a lot of vintage picked up at the Officer's Wives' Thrift Store. 50s beaded sweaters, genuine silk Japanese silk kimonos ,cashmere sweaters, Icelandic wool jackets, Italian leather shoes, etc. All bought for mere dollars. Wish I had them now.
Just start with one item or two at a time.( just a suggestion.) Basic versatile skirt? Dress? 2 blouses, vintage jacket,sweater.So many ideas.Keep your eyes open for garage sales( unless you shop online?) Thrift/collector shops may have less now,go row by row,and look for specific quality materials.Very easy when quality of todays' fabrics is awful poor in texture and weave and material. One is never too old or young! I'm 52.

I love vintage fascinators, I'm not very good with hats but I adore fascinators, all of the feathers, beads, flowers and netting. They finish off a good hair up do that you're wear to a function or even just out to coffee!
Love your video! I am a hat fanatic! About 2 years ago I was introduced to a hat shop in Eureka Springs, Arkansas called Hats, Hides And Heirlooms and I haven’t looked back. I don’t believe that I have left the house without a hat on since. As for people staring... I live in a small town in Arkansas and very rarely go out without getting at least one compliment. Just today, in a restaurant, I had a young man waiter make a special stop at our table to tell me how fabulous my hat was. I have found some very unique hats at antique stores. I have also made the mistake of buying a soiled one and thinking I could clean it. That has never worked out! My collection consists of about 70 hats. Maybe 10 or so are vintage. The others are vintage dupes or more modern (whatever that means) styles. I would add more but I don’t have any more room!

People who think wearing a hat is strange are wrong. I love my hats. Top hat, bowler hat, Australian bush man's hat, woolly bob hat, straw boater, butcher boy hat, cloche hat and all the rest. People comment but I do not care. Like you say, a hat helps to balance an outfit.
oh man, oh man, are you right about the 1920s/1930s dilemma. 1920s fashion is my first love but the fact that such pieces are so rare and expensive drives my ever so unrealistic ambition to somehow become an expert seamstress, milliner, and cobbler. in the meantime, though, i think i'll try and pick up one of those 1800s inspired hats to turn into a 30s/40s hat! have you ever done a complete hat DIY? that would be super interesting to watch.

Bought my wife three very refined straw panamas. They are not fedoras but simply hats made of 'paja toquilla.' And, as someone whose collected panamas for men, I immediately knew they would be classified as 'superfino.' I bought them at an estate sale of an eccentric working artist in one of the tonier sections of LA. There were so many hats. I wanted to buy all the straws. I just reblocked two by hand. Paja Toquilla of this grade is so fun and easy to work with. It's like butter.
Recently I discovered your channel. You have such a beautiful, classy look. Your style is amazing. My daughter's did the Fifties look for a number of years. Circle skirts, pin curls, sweater sets etc. I've collected vintage pieces over the years and love to wear something unique. I've worn an early 1950's grey suit that was my mum's, to work and it sure got the office talking. Thankfully all positive! You go girl! 😽👍💙

My own favourite hat is a little brown bowler-style hat that my mum bought me 30+ years ago. It's the only one I feel suits me. Love your hats!! I only have two hats (one is manufactured by Sears Millinery and the other shows a union along with the union number) but plan to start looking for them in antique/ vintage stores.
I have 3 pairs of gloves, following in your "Matchy Matchy" tradition. I have green and black leather ones and burgundy fabric ones. I have shoes to match all three colours and I am working on getting belts to match. I also have burgundy black and tortoishell reading and sun glasses and have a faux croc, black leather and faux green croc handbags (I do have others these are just my vintage style, or actual vintage pieces. Matching gets really OCD very quickly lol. I have however, taken up making hats and am working on matching these too! If it bothers people,(stained hat bands) its easy enough to replace it with a length of millinary petersham or grosgrain.
You can get a rechargeable air duster that works like the canned air but it is battery powered and chargers with usb c charger. Lovely to not risk the aerosol propellant getting on what you are cleaning. Also good for dusting knick knacks

Thanks for the tip on how to use a hat pin; I've been using them incorrectly. LOL, you are so correct that once you have a hat on, people notice you. The 1940s and '50s are my favorite decades for hats and fashion. Although, there's a 1967 David Frost interview of Joan Crawford on TH-cam, and she's wearing a pink print high turban with the tie in the back. I hope to have a copy of the hat made.
This is a lovely video! Here in Louisville hats are still considered cool in the spring, thanks to the Kentucky Derby, I always try on hats during that time of year, but I can never justify the purchase.

I think I must have trained myself young by wearing entirely too elaborate ensembles to school back in my high school days, so I have always been overdressed, and therefore for me it feels quite natural now ;)

Love all the info! Maybe do a Doris Day inspired lookbook for end of summer featuring the crates you made (ala "It Happened To Jane") and the floral hat with a pencil skirt, blouse, and pearls! Maybe you could do the Lookbook as a "day to evening in the 1960s" so you only have to do 3 or 4 outfits (morning with a house coat or robe, day with a casual working look, afternoon running errands, and an evening look for a late night date!

I love hats too, and my main style is 40's and 50s. Hats are not common in Australia ( other than sun hats and caps) so I also get a lot of looks, but l. DON'T. CARE . I'm used to it now. I loved this video and l covet some of your hats!
I love berets. I have many different colored ones. Lately, I found a few hats that I absolutely had to have. I display mine because out of site is out of mind for me. I do use a slightly damp cloth or soft brush to get dust off and it works well enough for me. I'm going to try the compressed air, such a time saver.
I'll admit I used to keep an image file on my computer that was a visual reminder of all of my hats so that I could pull it up and see which one would work for an outfit before I went digging for it, unfortunately I lost this reference image in a hard drive crash, so I really need to make a new one! Helpful when the collection gets perhaps a little *ahem* "too" large to keep track of... ;)
I’m really big on reusing materials (I run a company based on the principle). In the world of textile artistry, it’s so easy to reuse materials. Sheets at Arc are a great reuse product imo, given that a king size set is ~13yds of cotton for $3. I have a massive bias against synthetic fibers, although I see the validity in reusing them as well. I suppose one could argue that it’s even more important to reuse a polyester than it is to reuse a cotton or wool (I still hate polyester, though lol). I’ve recently gotten into hat construction, which inevitably leads one down a vintage-inspired road. Given that I just started learning the process, my results are no where near what I would consider worthy of charging someone’s hard-earned money, but it’s been fun so far. I actually went to a Denver junkyard, U Pull & Pay, in search of wire for brim construction. They mainly sell car parts, but I was able to find enough wire for at least 10 large hats, & the owner only charged me $1. It would’ve been much easier to just get some at Home Depot, but the reuse factor is integral to my business model & personal ideology, so I didn’t mind the hassle too much. I also tried melting plastic (at low temp to avoid burning, & this fumes) I dug out of a recycling dumpster by my house (🤣), & shaping it into tubes to use for hats & boning. There are so many opportunities to reuse materials, one’s imagination is basically the limit! The trouble is that it’s often easier, & therefore cheaper, to just make things like boning or wire from scratch. One must have an ideological motivation to make it a reality, & I’ve found that mostly people just don’t gaf. We all like to talk the talk, but it’s much more difficult to walk the walk. What I love about those who admire vintage style is that they often are also not swayed by convenience, which makes reuse of materials more applicable. Anyways, I’ll step off my soap box now lol.

Loved this video!!! Just happened upon it and loved every minute!! I wear hats all of the time. My husband does too. Our nickname in our group is "The Lid Kids"! I particularly like hats with some veiling, wide brimmed, some elongated and feminine bowler hats. In the Winter I wear wool and in the summer I wear wide brimmed straw with a SPF of 50. I think I have every color under the sun for summer hats. My husband wears fedoras and caps. My Mother and both Grandmothers wore hats all of the time and that is wear I got my love of hats. Have worn them since I was 3/4 years old. I don't care if I get stared at and most of the time I get compliments. Thank you so much for doing this video. Your beautiful shallow crown black straw hat is very much like the bergere style hat that one found also in the 18th century. I recently purchased one (a copy of course!) for reenactment purposes and quickly realising I can also double it up for 40s style, bonus!
I actually have a good suggestion for 1920s-1930s hats for people who sew. Elsewhenmillinery on etsy sell sewing patterns for hats in that shape. They look absolutely gorgeous. I've been waiting for fall to grab one personally because of where I live, but if you live in a cooler place I could see getting a lot of wear out of these
I love wearing my vintage hats in public! Usually get some positive compliments on my whole outfits. Haven't tried wearing it out in the US yet, just here in the UK or at automotive theme events.
I am an avid collector and I have been friends with a milliner. She made some gorgeous hats for me over the years. She recommended that I store my hats in Reynolds baking bags. Then I place them in a hatbox. Dust just doesnt stick to those bags and moths hate them.

I’ve found if I have a wool hat with moth bites if I stick it with a pin like refelting it it makes the moth bite less visible and does not ruin the hat.

Have you ever worn a hat with a hatpin in it through security such as going into a museum? If so has there been any problems? (Obviously wouldn't be wearing a hatpin through TSA)
I'm not sure I have actually! I don't often bring my hats when traveling because they are hard to pack without fear of damaging them, and the art museum here in Denver does not have security! I can imagine it may be a problem, but perhaps only if it was one of the longer ones? Not sure!
I had my hair patted down at an airport for having it up in twisty bun pins so it is possible, but TSA didn't really care. Hat pins are "dangerous" though. I recently went to a funeral. As we entered the church my husband said “take your hat off.” I did not remove my hat, somewhere in the back of my mind I remembered my mother telling me when I was a child that men should remove their hats inside a church whereas the etiquette for women is to leave your hat in place.

I was looking for more information on hat pins and how to use them and this was so comprehensive! It's funny you say people will stare at you when you wear hats. I certainly can confirm this, as someone who wears large brimmed straw hats from the beginning of Spring to the end of Summer as sun protection. Most of the stares are curious, and sometimes it's actually nods of approval from grandparent-aged people. :D Sun protection can be pretty and fashionable! (and is entirely necessary for survival in Australia!) I have recently discovered (but this is yet to be confirmed by a Dermatologist) there is a strong possibility that have a chronic skin disorder (and not just normal pale Irish-Scottish type skin that burns a lot). I strongly suspect that it's something known as Solar Urticaria (or sun hives in English) which is where you break out in hives from contact with Sunlight. I first thought it was the more common PMLE but I have too many different symptoms lol. Solar allergies are literally the basis for the myth about vampires exploding/burning in the sun. This is incredibly funny to me right now. 🤣 I'm not a doctor though so I am still awaiting professional diagnosis. 😊 If I do in fact have Solar Urticaria, then it's actually really rare in Australia, South and South-East Asia, and the Pacific. Solar allergies are much more common in the British Isles, Europe, Scandinavia and North America, because of genetics. So I'm a medical unicorn as well as a vampire, maybe? 🧛🏻 All of this to say is that I already have been into vintage fashion for at least 10 years, mainly with accessories, sun hats (vintage looking but new), 1910-1960s hair and some pretty 1940s and 1960s dresses. Since I realised that I now need to add way more gloves and hats in addition to my sun-protection clothes, I'm only gonna get more vintage-looking. Just older eras. It's a good thing that I love Victorian and Edwardian era clothes - they have some primo sun-protection ensembles! (I already own like 3 parasols). Now to start learning how to make my own historical-ish clothes. I have an awesome collection of vintage "Souvenir Scarves", a couple of little 1940s or maybe 1960s skullcaps, several pairs of gloves and a lot of awesome 1930 and 1940s style trousers. I've always dressed in summer to cover my skin but in the last five years it has been head to toe fabric + large straw hats. Looking forward to adding more large hats, gloves to all of my outfits!!

Not sure if someone said or about the specific details, but my understanding of the drop off of hat use in the second part of the 50s was due in part to Vatican II. Women were no longer required to cover their heads in church. Great vid! I was wondering if you would consider doing a video about vintage foundation garments. Potentially not showing yours ( if you use them) for both appropriate comfort levels but also monetization. But potentially an overview of what was used, some resources, & if you know anything about making a thing like a girdle for instance. It’s been the hardest part of getting into vintage for me. Strikingly beautiful as always. Love a red lip. Hat are so much fun I wear large brim straw hats in the summer because I'm ghostly white with a dash of pink, so I don't burn. Now that I'm in Kansas, I get to wear all kinds of hats to stay warm in the winter. I have a pink hat from the forties that was mom's. I also have a mesh silver evening bag. Let's talk ok? And it’s not that my generation is any different, really. I see the same attitude amongst my peers all the time-yearning for new things, always wanting to consume. That mentality is the backbone of our economy, which is a problem, bc it’s not sustainable. Resources are finite, after all. I think thrifting has become much more acceptable, but I think the underlying motivation is still an issue. I’ve encountered a lot of people who thrift solely to be able to afford more things in order to fill up a huge closet. More is better. Name brand means value. I’m not on a high horse or anything-I see that same behavior in myself sometimes, too.
The magic of hats, vintage or modern, is that they transform everything......your look, your attitude.....everything. Wear a hat and your become a mystery that no one can ignore. I get a thrill whenever I wear a hat because I know everyone is looking at me and wondering......wondering what? Well, I hope it's that I look fabulous! And I must say, you have what we call a "hat face".... a perfectly gorgeous hat face!

I am so glad you brought up the “dressing for your body type” thing. That’s something that’s always bothered me in the realm of fashion. If you like something, wear it! I get a little self-conscious in hats because people already stare at me a lot, but I have a few that I really enjoy wearing. One of them is an antique men’s top hat that has been well worn. 🎩 Very informative video! Thank you!

Loved this video! I'm studying millinery and part of it is freshing up and restoring vintage hats. It can be done by steaming them carefully and replacing stained petersham ribbons. Millinery is dying out as a craft so it's always a good idea to support your local millinery by giving them work!

When I am pinning on a hat and my hair is freshly washed and slippery, I find I can back comb a very small area, spritz that with hair-spray, put a hair grip in place there, then pin my hat pin under the hair grip. As you mentioned earlier, a lady doesn't need to remove her hat so the little 'knotty' area remains a secret! :-)
A few months ago ago one of my roommates gave me her grandmother's vintage hats, I always feel so costume-y wearing them. This was a good inspiration video for hat wearing
Thank you! I think hats almost feel less costumey when paired with an equally "extra" ensemble, like if the rest of the outfit is at a similar formality or level of detail a hat seems less out of place perhaps.
When I was a young, poor Airman's wife I wore a lot of vintage picked up at the Officer's Wives' Thrift Store. 50s beaded sweaters, genuine silk Japanese silk kimonos ,cashmere sweaters, Icelandic wool jackets, Italian leather shoes, etc. All bought for mere dollars. Wish I had them now.

Just start with one item or two at a time.( just a suggestion.) Basic versatile skirt? Dress? 2 blouses, vintage jacket,sweater.So many ideas.Keep your eyes open for garage sales( unless you shop online?) Thrift/collector shops may have less now,go row by row,and look for specific quality materials.Very easy when quality of todays' fabrics is awful poor in texture and weave and material. One is never too old or young! I'm 52.

I love vintage fascinators, I'm not very good with hats but I adore fascinators, all of the feathers, beads, flowers and netting. They finish off a good hair up do that you're wear to a function or even just out to coffee!
Love your video! I am a hat fanatic! About 2 years ago I was introduced to a hat shop in Eureka Springs, Arkansas called Hats, Hides And Heirlooms and I haven’t looked back. I don’t believe that I have left the house without a hat on since.
As for people staring... I live in a small town in Arkansas and very rarely go out without getting at least one compliment. Just today, in a restaurant, I had a young man waiter make a special stop at our table to tell me how fabulous my hat was.
I have found some very unique hats at antique stores. I have also made the mistake of buying a soiled one and thinking I could clean it. That has never worked out!
My collection consists of about 70 hats. Maybe 10 or so are vintage. The others are vintage dupes or more modern (whatever that means) styles. I would add more but I don’t have any more room!

People who think wearing a hat is strange are wrong. I love my hats. Top hat, bowler hat, Australian bush man's hat, woolly bob hat, straw boater, butcher boy hat, cloche hat and all the rest. People comment but I do not care. Like you say, a hat helps to balance an outfit.
oh man, oh man, are you right about the 1920s/1930s dilemma. 1920s fashion is my first love but the fact that such pieces are so rare and expensive drives my ever so unrealistic ambition to somehow become an expert seamstress, milliner, and cobbler. in the meantime, though, i think i'll try and pick up one of those 1800s inspired hats to turn into a 30s/40s hat! have you ever done a complete hat DIY? that would be super interesting to watch.

Bought my wife three very refined straw panamas. They are not fedoras but simply hats made of 'paja toquilla.' And, as someone whose collected panamas for men, I immediately knew they would be classified as 'superfino.' I bought them at an estate sale of an eccentric working artist in one of the tonier sections of LA. There were so many hats. I wanted to buy all the straws. I just reblocked two by hand. Paja Toquilla of this grade is so fun and easy to work with. It's like butter.
Recently I discovered your channel. You have such a beautiful, classy look. Your style is amazing. My daughter's did the Fifties look for a number of years. Circle skirts, pin curls, sweater sets etc. I've collected vintage pieces over the years and love to wear something unique. I've worn an early 1950's grey suit that was my mum's, to work and it sure got the office talking. Thankfully all positive! You go girl! 😽👍💙

The flower hat made on the wire frame was also made on a large pill box. They were worn in the spring and summertime with a suit mostly.

I have 3 pairs of gloves, following in your "Matchy Matchy" tradition. I have green and black leather ones and burgundy fabric ones. I have shoes to match all three colours and I am working on getting belts to match. I also have burgundy black and tortoishell reading and sun glasses and have a faux croc, black leather and faux green croc handbags (I do have others these are just my vintage style, or actual vintage pieces. Matching gets really OCD very quickly lol. I have however, taken up making hats and am working on matching these too!
If it bothers people,(stained hat bands) its easy enough to replace it with a length of millinary petersham or grosgrain.
You can get a rechargeable air duster that works like the canned air but it is battery powered and chargers with usb c charger. Lovely to not risk the aerosol propellant getting on what you are cleaning. Also good for dusting knick knacks

I think I must have trained myself young by wearing entirely too elaborate ensembles to school back in my high school days, so I have always been overdressed, and therefore for me it feels quite natural now ;)

Love all the info! Maybe do a Doris Day inspired lookbook for end of summer featuring the crates you made (ala "It Happened To Jane") and the floral hat with a pencil skirt, blouse, and pearls! Maybe you could do the Lookbook as a "day to evening in the 1960s" so you only have to do 3 or 4 outfits (morning with a house coat or robe, day with a casual working look, afternoon running errands, and an evening look for a late night date!

I love hats too, and my main style is 40's and 50s. Hats are not common in Australia ( other than sun hats and caps) so I also get a lot of looks, but l. DON'T. CARE . I'm used to it now. I loved this video and l covet some of your hats!

I love berets. I have many different colored ones. Lately, I found a few hats that I absolutely had to have. I display mine because out of site is out of mind for me. I do use a slightly damp cloth or soft brush to get dust off and it works well enough for me. I'm going to try the compressed air, such a time saver.
I'll admit I used to keep an image file on my computer that was a visual reminder of all of my hats so that I could pull it up and see which one would work for an outfit before I went digging for it, unfortunately I lost this reference image in a hard drive crash, so I really need to make a new one! Helpful when the collection gets perhaps a little *ahem* "too" large to keep track of... ;)
I’m really big on reusing materials (I run a company based on the principle). In the world of textile artistry, it’s so easy to reuse materials. Sheets at Arc are a great reuse product imo, given that a king size set is ~13yds of cotton for $3. I have a massive bias against synthetic fibers, although I see the validity in reusing them as well. I suppose one could argue that it’s even more important to reuse a polyester than it is to reuse a cotton or wool (I still hate polyester, though lol). I’ve recently gotten into hat construction, which inevitably leads one down a vintage-inspired road. Given that I just started learning the process, my results are no where near what I would consider worthy of charging someone’s hard-earned money, but it’s been fun so far. I actually went to a Denver junkyard, U Pull & Pay, in search of wire for brim construction. They mainly sell car parts, but I was able to find enough wire for at least 10 large hats, & the owner only charged me $1. It would’ve been much easier to just get some at Home Depot, but the reuse factor is integral to my business model & personal ideology, so I didn’t mind the hassle too much. I also tried melting plastic (at low temp to avoid burning, & this fumes) I dug out of a recycling dumpster by my house (🤣), & shaping it into tubes to use for hats & boning. There are so many opportunities to reuse materials, one’s imagination is basically the limit! The trouble is that it’s often easier, & therefore cheaper, to just make things like boning or wire from scratch. One must have an ideological motivation to make it a reality, & I’ve found that mostly people just don’t gaf. We all like to talk the talk, but it’s much more difficult to walk the walk. What I love about those who admire vintage style is that they often are also not swayed by convenience, which makes reuse of materials more applicable. Anyways, I’ll step off my soap box now lol.

Loved this video!!! Just happened upon it and loved every minute!! I wear hats all of the time. My husband does too. Our nickname in our group is "The Lid Kids"! I particularly like hats with some veiling, wide brimmed, some elongated and feminine bowler hats. In the Winter I wear wool and in the summer I wear wide brimmed straw with a SPF of 50. I think I have every color under the sun for summer hats. My husband wears fedoras and caps. My Mother and both Grandmothers wore hats all of the time and that is wear I got my love of hats. Have worn them since I was 3/4 years old. I don't care if I get stared at and most of the time I get compliments. Thank you so much for doing this video. It was alot of fun for me to listen to someone else who loves hats!!!

Your beautiful shallow crown black straw hat is very much like the bergere style hat that one found also in the 18th century. I recently purchased one (a copy of course!) for reenactment purposes and quickly realising I can also double it up for 40s style, bonus!

I actually have a good suggestion for 1920s-1930s hats for people who sew. Elsewhenmillinery on etsy sell sewing patterns for hats in that shape. They look absolutely gorgeous. I've been waiting for fall to grab one personally because of where I live, but if you live in a cooler place I could see getting a lot of wear out of these

I am an avid collector and I have been friends with a milliner. She made some gorgeous hats for me over the years. She recommended that I store my hats in Reynolds baking bags. Then I place them in a hatbox. Dust just doesnt stick to those bags and moths hate them.

I. Magnin was indeed a San Francisco based high end/'luxury brand' department store (like Marshall Field, Neiman Marcus) which endured until the mid 1990s, named by its creator Mary Ann Magnin for her husband Isaac.
I’ve found if I have a wool hat with moth bites if I stick it with a pin like refelting it it makes the moth bite less visible and does not ruin the hat.

Have you ever worn a hat with a hatpin in it through security such as going into a museum? If so has there been any problems? (Obviously wouldn't be wearing a hatpin through TSA)
I'm not sure I have actually! I don't often bring my hats when traveling because they are hard to pack without fear of damaging them, and the art museum here in Denver does not have security! I can imagine it may be a problem, but perhaps only if it was one of the longer ones? Not sure!

I had my hair patted down at an airport for having it up in twisty bun pins so it is possible, but TSA didn't really care. Hat pins are "dangerous" though. As we entered the church my husband said “take your hat off.” I did not remove my hat, somewhere in the back of my mind I remembered my mother telling me when I was a child that men should remove their hats inside a church whereas the etiquette for women is to leave your hat in place.

I certainly can confirm this, as someone who wears large brimmed straw hats from the beginning of Spring to the end of Summer as sun protection. Most of the stares are curious, and sometimes it's actually nods of approval from grandparent-aged people. :D Sun protection can be pretty and fashionable! (and is entirely necessary for survival in Australia!)
I have recently discovered (but this is yet to be confirmed by a Dermatologist) there is a strong possibility that have a chronic skin disorder (and not just normal pale Irish-Scottish type skin that burns a lot). I strongly suspect that it's something known as Solar Urticaria (or sun hives in English) which is where you break out in hives from contact with Sunlight. I first thought it was the more common PMLE but I have too many different symptoms lol. Solar allergies are literally the basis for the myth about vampires exploding/burning in the sun. This is incredibly funny to me right now. 🤣
I'm not a doctor though so I am still awaiting professional diagnosis. 😊 If I do in fact have Solar Urticaria, then it's actually really rare in Australia, South and South-East Asia, and the Pacific. Solar allergies are much more common in the British Isles, Europe, Scandinavia and North America, because of genetics. So I'm a medical unicorn as well as a vampire, maybe? 🧛🏻
All of this to say is that I already have been into vintage fashion for at least 10 years, mainly with accessories, sun hats (vintage looking but new), 1910-1960s hair and some pretty 1940s and 1960s dresses. Since I realised that I now need to add way more gloves and hats in addition to my sun-protection clothes, I'm only gonna get more vintage-looking. Just older eras. It's a good thing that I love Victorian and Edwardian era clothes - they have some primo sun-protection ensembles! (I already own like 3 parasols). Now to start learning how to make my own historical-ish clothes.
I have an awesome collection of vintage "Souvenir Scarves", a couple of little 1940s or maybe 1960s skullcaps, several pairs of gloves and a lot of awesome 1930 and 1940s style trousers. I've always dressed in summer to cover my skin but in the last five years it has been head to toe fabric + large straw hats. Looking forward to adding more large hats, gloves to all of my outfits!!
22:05 I'm late to the game here, but I feel like you could probably style that flower hat with an off-white 1930's crocheted dress, or even a sack dress. It would have a nice cottagecore vibe to it.
Not sure if someone said or about the specific details, but my understanding of the drop off of hat use in the second part of the 50s was due in part to Vatican II. Women were no longer required to cover their heads in church.

Potentially not showing yours ( if you use them) for both appropriate comfort levels but also monetization. But potentially an overview of what was used, some resources, & if you know anything about making a thing like a girdle for instance. It’s been the hardest part of getting into vintage for me. Strikingly beautiful as always. Love a red lip. Hat are so much fun I wear large brim straw hats in the summer because I'm ghostly white with a dash of pink, so I don't burn. Now that I'm in Kansas, I get to wear all kinds of hats to stay warm in the winter. I have a pink hat from the forties that was mom's. I also have a mesh silver evening bag. Let's talk ok? I also think the dress clips are the best. Smashing.
